RE: The Thread!!!
I have Morrison's 15 volume history of the US Navy and have been reading about the Aleutions recently. The US did attempt the northern route through the Aleutions and discovered it was prohibitive. Their op losses were in excess of 90% of the total losses due to weather. Between that and the horrible weather reducing the available flying weather, they decided another route was preferable.

I find this to be quite a usefull strategy in the game as well for both sides. In one game my opponent and I are jousting of Noaname (sp) atoll, for that very reason.ORIGINAL: rtrapasso
Shattered Sword claimed the first - buffer zone, as they were worried the Allies might advance along that axis...

RE: The Thread!!!
I did some research on the Aelutians about 6 months ago as well when I was considering creating two scenarios for the Aelutian campaign (one historical and one "what-if"). Weather was a serious concern and was the main reason I didn't go forward with the plans for the scenario. Basically, I found that the weather there was far worse then what was modeled in WitP and it would be hard to do a realistic historical version. I considered some work arounds like moding the accuracy of the planes down, etc. but that wouldn't really work as some days, on rare occasions, the weather is actually clear and bomber accuracy would be much higher. Plus, it's a forgotten part of the war and finding OOB for the theater was tough. All I could find was information for Anchorage and the actual battles.

RE: The Thread!!!
The roads are full of idiots... Case in point: I was almost in a traffic accident today.
I'm on the bus, morning commute to school. We come up to an intersection where my bus is supposed to turn right. Another bus is in the neighbouring lane, set to drive straight ahead once the lights change from red to green. Thus, there's a gap between my bus' front left and the other's rear right. When that gap is about 10 feet and diminishing, a small car zips in between the two busses. Just like that! And for what? So this f*cking idiot could be first in line for the lights to change.
What the hell is wrong with this sort of people?

Actually, I sympathize, I feel like I am living in a state that may have the worlds worst drivers (COlorado). Of course, what should I expect with a place that seems to be predominantly urban redneck. Two weekends ago when GF and I were in California, we actually noted how, compared to Colorado, the drivers were calm, curteous and attentive.
On that note I also had someone actually tell me the other day that they were proud to be considered an urban redneck - a new classification in our population. I asked them point blank if they proud to self-identify with a group of people that was stereo-typed as uneducated, ill-mannered and prejudiced, while simultaneously not possessing the ethics of hard-work, self-determination and responsibility that one generally gains having grown up in an actual rural/farm environment. At this point the "gentleman" just blinked at me and repeated that he was proud to be an urban redneck.

That quote is the punch line. He's in a tree with a bobcat and talking to his hunting buddies down below.

You speak such great English I sometimes forget that you might be missing cultural references, especially mildly obscure, Southern ones. [;)]
