Cautionaries 2.01 (Early Alpha)
Cautionaries 2.01 (Early Alpha)
Cautionaries 2 is a complete reconstruction of Cautionaries using 1.205 engine and incorporating several new ideas. The goal was to simplify gameplay and make the setup more realistic.
1. All non-American and non-Japanese units have been removed.
2. All units appearing on the map after 5/31/1924 have been removed.
3. All armored units have been removed from the game. IJA did not have any tank units until 1925; until that time all it possessed were 2 Austin armored cars. USA tank companies have been incorporated into infantry divisions; thus all divisions enter the game fully equipped with tanks.
4. Vast majority of engineer units have been removed from the game. This shall eliminate level 9 forts across Pacific by 1923. There are still several engineer regiments and 13 (5 Japanese 8 American) airbase crews present.
5. A number of secondary and outlying bases have been removed from the game.
6. IJN now gets its fuel from Dutch East Indies rather than from Singapore.
7. USN Langley's arrival expedited to fall of 1922 as the ship was converted by 3/20/1922. It may be argued that it was still inoperable at that point in time; that being the case neither should be Hosho.
This is an early Alpha release, designed to report on progress achieved. While fully playable, it still needs playtesting.

Good work! [8D]
But not really playable yet - almost all Jap BBs are set as reinforcment to "uknown" port - BB-less Japan [;)]

Hm... must be a result of decreasing the number of IJN bases. I'll check it out.

She was sunk on 1905 due to internal explosion, but then moved back to service in 1906. She was declassified to coastal defence ship in 1921. And finally in 1926 she became a ground memorial...
Rysyonok, get Mikasa back to Cautionaries..

RE: Cautionaries 2.02 (Early Alpha)
By many sources she ran aground but was repaired and brought back to Maizuru. She was decommisioned officially because of Washington treaty in 1921 (which is out of WPO series). In 1923 she suffered by Great Kanto Earthquake. And if you want model this you need to bring 50-70 sys dmg to half of Japan. [:D] Anyway, by this time (Sep 1923) Cautionaries should be more than a year old. [;)]
Imho, it is more than probable that in case of early war Japan would utilize all it's resources including semi-memorial pre-dreadnoughts. Mikasa is a dead meat against any of US BB or modern CA/CL, but still can be used in coastal defence role as it was historically.

RE: Cautionaries 2.02 (Early Alpha)
That's definitely something to consider. On one hand, IJN is likely to scramble for all it got - hence all of those obsolete 3rd class DDs in 1.7 Cautionaries. On the other hand, this scenario does have to account for having to screen Russians... Brits... French... Dutch... you name it. As much as 1/2 of USN DDs never enter the game in 1.7 Cautionaries and neither do 2/3 of the battleships - I did extensive research utilizing Wikipedia to come up with that. It's only fair that IJN sets aside a handful of junk ships to protect its back.
It's not that much, really. Asama, Tokiwa, Idzumo... the good old RJW lineup, ships already obsolete by the time Cautionaries roll out. Ships that, if allowed back in, would face sys damage (Mikasa), class change (transport Asama, anyone?) or serious armament decreases (Tokiwa) or experience drops (Idzumo)...
After all, the crews for all those new shiny dreadnoughts, CLs, and DDs had to come from somewhere.
What did IJN do in WW2? Force older ships into service or scrap them to expedite newer ones? That may help me decide...

Always thought that Cautionaries is made to narrow political choices not the millitary abilities, thus making game more simple.. balanced.. enjoyable.. you name it [;)]

Thanks, Helpless
Scenario is 199.
As I mentioned before, the scenario is still being worked on. There're way too many homeless ships still left to weed out
The current release is FYI only.
I will complete assigning home bases by the weekend and will release 2.03.
Next step - adding back antiques such as Mikasa and Itsukushima with appropriate projected modifications.

Cautionaries 2.03 (Alpha)
Version 10/11/2006.
Changelog:
8. Updated starting locations for all ships.
9. Reworked many Japanese and American bases, toning down their values.
10. Reworked Filipino Gunboat lineup, creating 3 new ship classes and deleting several gunboats that did no longer exist in 1922.
11. Deleted all ships starting after 1/1924 (slower USN ships starting on West Coast) / 2/1924 (faster USN destroyers / 4/1924 (Japanese ships). Remember, the scenario ends in 5/1924.
12. Added a brief FAQ/installation file to the briefcase.
13. Initiated leader database purge, taking out British/Canadian/Australian/etc leaders in command of American ships or units.

Cautionaries 2.04 (Alpha)
Version 10/14/2006.
(I'm going on vacation until 10/22/2006)
Changelog:
14. Brought IJN Mikasa back as a reinforcement in October of 1923. Still debating about other obsolete IJN warships.
15. Created new graphics for Filipino Gunboats utilizing images of similar vessels, mainly USN armed yachts circa 1875-1895.
16. Continued purging the leader file. My goal is to eliminate doubles (e.g., having the same leader as a ship commander in one taskforce and a task force commander in the other) and most of the inferior leaders, making selections of proper captains easier on the player. The file is currently down to 19080 names.
(150% magnification of Elcano (top) and Quiros/Villalobos/Callao/Pampagna (bottom) classes)
