Question(s) from potential buyer

Post by Sunrise »

Hi ... I've played WitP a little bit. It's frankly a bit huge for me. But WPO sounds better with the lack of all those planes. Like the naval focus too. I've read through the forum to soak up some info.

But some questions before I pull the Christmas purchase trigger:
- Does WPO suffer from the same odd bugs as WitP? I assume it must since it's based on the case code base. Leader bugs? Random LCU movement? Disappearing units? File corruption, etc? Or does the simpler, sleaker play (no production, far smaller number of air units, etc) mean that the bugs are less of a nuisance? I noticed the support forum is practically empty.

-Also, do an of the cool tools made by users work with WPO? For instance Bodhi's SigInt tool or Woos witpdecoder? Or does the databasediffer so greatly as to make those tools un-usable? Finally, does the simpler gameplay (just in terms of number of units, lack of production, etc.) make the game a bit easier to handle? Or are spreadsheets still necessary?

Thanks so much. Mayhaps I'll join y'all on the seas of the 1920's soon.

You have answered all your question already [;)]

Yes it inherits all the bugs with WITP engine. Speaking about support, it also lacks the latest patches been released for WITP (1.802/1.804). But as you said these bugs are not that "visible" in WPO because database is much smaller, so all the probabilities are smaller as well. Unfortunately WPO popularity is not near of WITP, so most of the WPO problems/questions resolved in WITP support forums.

I personally do not use any of WITP tools, but database structures are absolutely the same. WITP editors work fine with WPO, so should other tools. Bodhi utility is useful for Allied sigint tracking , which is absent in WPO. Witpdecoder is mostly used for production which also not the case. I still use spreadsheets on initial planning stage, but after some time you should learn all your subordinates by heart [:)]

But in general WPO is very nice toy. Light and easy after WITP. Go for it..

WITP decoder doesn’t work with WPO.  (Besides production, the decoder lets you keep track of things like which units are prepping and/or moving towards what destinations, and ship upgrades.)

nice thing about WPO is that once you get organized you can do a turn in 10-15 min, and if your opponent has the same availability as you can rack up the turns reasonably quick. yes it does sometimes have annoying quirks like erratic pathfinding and DD's which continuously find and successfully attack SS's in the middle of the nite w/o the subs announcing their presence, but it's a blast not having to care about the aircraft and just sending out the big gun BB's to flush out enemy ships in the pacific! in a way if yer the USA you don't even have to care about land units much either - kill enough jap ships and he's not going to want to play anymore!

I just bought the game and it's time to experiment with it between my UV PBEM games.  WIPT continues to scare me off each time I try it due to it's huge scale, production, etc.

I never thought that doing an AAR would be so time consuming and difficult.
