Making the Commander an SS Leader

Post by KG Erwin »

Ok, so does this require editing the unit tables to do this? I can buy SS at the start, but if the Platoon Commander is a Heer unit, you are restricted in upgrading him (i.e., my HQ group) only to other Heer units.

Command Upgrade Path

Post by Comrade_Blabsky »

The special upgrade path for commanders requires certain numbered slots in the teams files.  There are additional command units that are not in the upgrade path.

Putting the SS commands in at all was a feature of CC3 Real Red mod, as was Guard commanders and the Soviet command vehicle crew.  They discovered problems during early RR versions, and developed an upgrade path chart that may still be available somewhere. The problems arise when non-command teams are placed in the refit path, or when modded refit paths don't follow the apparently hard-coded slots.

Some symptoms were:  Having your named commander killed and losing medals, stats, etc.  Seeing the AI refit an infantry squad as a command unit.  Losing command radius.  These would happen especially in multi-day scenarios with preselected non-refit-path command units.

Another variable in the SS commander is that SS units will not show up until 2Lt rank, so a more extensive uniform color/unit color assignment tweak would be needed for, say, an SS mod for the German side of CoI.
