What about AI control?

Post by GBS »

Playing Wake as US I give AI control to two carrier groups and to the cargo group attempting to resupply Wake island. I keep control of the middle group with Enterprise. I give the cargo TG the order to go to Wake Isl and the nearby TG (under AI control) escort it. I let the AI handle the bottom TG. Isn't the escorting TG supposed to fly CAP over and otherwise protect the Cargo group it is escorting? I couldn't tell that this was being done. the escorting carrier group was never within 3 hexes of the cargo group. Is this the way escorting should be done?
Lastly, will the AI attack or do anything other than manage search and CAP for its own group?

IIRC when given an escort order the TG will occupy the same hex as its target.

AFAIK you can also only give AI control to a Task Force - not a TG! This is done via the scenario selection screen. In Coral Sea therefore you can give AI control to either all naval forces, all land bases or both (ie: there are only 2 TF buttons to choose from). Once toggled the button for that TF or base asset grouping will invert and you will not be able to make selections for it.

How are you trying to give AI control to a TF?

I am doing this on the Scenario Setup screen. There are four listed at the top right on the Wake scenario. Each gives the oportunity to give AI control and they are all listed as TG not task force. Take a look yourself. I have yet to see a TF.

My bad GBS, of course you said Wake, it was late here when I typed my response.

Ok, so in the Wake scenario set up screen you have the option to set human or AI control for 4 US Task Forces (each button is a TF).

The buttons with the US flags are in fact TF's. Blue are naval, green are land (really representing Base Forces) If you press one of these buttons, its composite Task Groups will be shown. For a naval TF you'll get buttons of ships. For a naval base force you'll get more flags representing land bases.

If you click a TF button it will invert indicating that you have given it control to the AI....

..... and I now see your problem because once the scenario starts you can still give it full orders can't you! [&:][&:][&:]

This could be a bug. Good post GBS! Let's see what the experts say,

Adam.

The AI does it's best to work out what you are trying to do, but doesnt always succeed (as it's hard for the computer to work out your plans). You will get better results if you control all the task forces in the game, rather than just one.
