German tactical symbols counter mod
Started working on a possible counter mod using WW2-era german taktische zeichen (tactical symbols) today. Following Rhino's advice, I dropped the idea of including the german size designators, they used a system of small flags that would be impossible to recreate in TOAW (or only partially) so the standards NATO ones would be used. That would damage historical accuracy a bit but would make life of players unfamiliar with them a little easier. Before I go on with the idea though I wanted to evaluate the interest of such a mod for you guys, it would require quite a bit of work and I've already my hands full with Vietnam Combat Operations Volume 4 right now. To give you an idea, here's the first two row of a modified counter sheet:

You're the man, Boonie.
With the current numbers.bmp's unit size symbols it it would look like this:

Thanks for the visualisation Telu, not 100% satisfying is it [:(]
RE: German tactical symbols counter mod
Would you use the alarm clock battalion for early morning attacks and is there a method for soldiers to transfer between the ice skating battalion and the roller blade battalion?
Best wishes,

Presumeably you move the TV antenna battalion around until you get the best reception. They had problems with that in the Second World War.

RE: German tactical symbols counter mod
On second thought I might give a chance to the german size designators, they could work better actually for units from Company to Regiment, and keep NATO for the higher sizes...more sleepless nights ahead [>:]
RE: German tactical symbols counter mod
Boon, I would really like these symbols. Thanks for taking time to do them.
RE: German tactical symbols counter mod
Boonierat,
You would need to include a key. I am fairly sure that the alarm clock symbol is not supposed to represent an alarm clock but without a key ...

Boonierat posted a pix of what the symbols stood for in the JM's TOAWIII mod folder. But you are correct there needs to be a key for these symbols, and the germans had lots of symbols. I want to see the Field Post Office unit.ORIGINAL: shunwick

Yes, there would be some documentations coming with it, but I'm far from that stage yet [:D]
Might have found a solution for unit size, I'll post the results soonish.
PS: BTW, the alarm clock is the symbol for motorcycle [;)]

Looks cool Boonie. One of the things I like about TOAW is that visualisations (map/counters/game windows) can be personalized

Too bad you can't get the number/type of vehicles/guns etc on the counter. I think the Germans did that so they would know what the unit was capable of. Guess we just have to do the unit info key. Thanks looks great.
RE: German tactical symbols counter mod
awesome!!!!
Is there any way to have both these counter symbols and a set of NATO symbols in the editor at the same time so one could assign the German ones to German units and the standard symbols to Allied ones?
Also, is there a cheat sheet available somewhere (I am only partially familiar with these symbols but would love to learn them)?
Lastly, did the Germans use these symbols to represent division and corps sized units?
Thanks, again nice work!!!

By putting the German counters in a scenario-specific folder in the Graphics folder. That method overrules/replaces the standard icons used.

Here's what it looks like with flag size-indicators:

In the top left corner? Looks very good with the square symbols (all kinds of infantry), here is a try with the size indicator in the middle (company to division):

These look great, Boonie. I think it looks better with the flag on the left, rather than the centre.
