Game lenght?

I've noticed that in all of the AAR's none of games have lasted more than 16-17 turns?

No war lasts forever [8D]

Well, I'd guess that two equal players on a mirrored map could play for a long time ... and what AAR would you rather read? The 16 turn AAR with much action, or the 49 turn AAR where "yeah, we just put up the artillery there and let it tear everything to pieces while the company had a picnic from turn 9 to turn 36."

But ... I remember all the PT AARs not lasting much longer ...
Don't be scared - I'm almost sure that I just want to play!

I have seen games that last much longer, but i must say i intentionaly coded and designed AT so that it is hard to get into a stalemate situation.

Game lenth ?

You think 17 turns is not much ? Let me tell you that as a careful player i needed up to 90 minutes for ONE turn in bigger games.
Checking enemy action, looking at the map, analyzing what to do, doing attacks, buying reenforcements and managing production
for the next turn. "normal" turns i still need 20-45 minutes often (not direct after game start of course). About the same time as i needed
for a "War in Russia" turn long time ago.

In addition i played already AT games with more than 60 turns and i can´t see any reason why games above 100 turns shouldn´t be possible.
But often it´s like in real war: If one side gets a bigger advantage (for example air superiority) the game is normally over soon at least between two
player on the same level. Same for naval superiority.

Game length depends on many things:
-How big is the map ?
-How many cities on the map?
-Number of players
-Normal AI or AI with advantage ?
-And not to forget the terrain

I wouldnt worry to much about game length either. And like Seille said, it depends on alot of stuff.
If the map is big you will use quite some time on a single turn.

I took about 30 - 60 minutes on average to play the turns in the Russia scenario that was AAR'd earlier.  You could probably play it solitaire in about 20 hours (if the Germans win) and 2-3 times as long if the Soviets win (provided you play to the bitter end).  I am a big fan of pbem so the gating factor is really the response time of my opponent.  I typically do a turn a day and 2 on the weekends on average so a game usually lasts about 2-4 weeks.  I personally like this game length (long enough to be meaningful but not so long that you have to wait forever to try a new approach to a situation).  However, you could easily write scenarios that take much longer if interested.

How much of the 30 - 60 minutes is the computer AI's turn VS. the time it takes for the player to plan/move units? The issue I had with PT was after turn 20 the AI took so long for it's turn the game became unplayable.
