There aren't location names on the map, as such. You have to select a location to see them.

Yeah, but i just checked the town/island of Espirity Santo is there. But its on a single hex along with some other single hex islands in the area. Its not nearly detailed enough. Below Espirity Santo is New Hebrides.

The hex scale is larger than WITP, for example, but it also plays out quite a bit faster. There are four sides in that scenario - US, Japan, Britain (Commonwealth, Dutch), China.

I shudder to think of a game that plays slower than WitP...[:D]

Just a small point off topic, but looking at the above SS, it appears to me that the hexes are not uniform; the top and bottom hex edges are longer than the side edges. This means that the NS distance is longer than the SW-NE distance for instance.

Is this in fact the case in the game or was there scaling problem with the SS? Or is is due to fiendishly clever modelling of the (albeit slight) bulge in the Earth's equator?

@stridor,

no you are right. the hexes are like they are shown in the screenshot.
but i dont think the current hex width and height gives any major distortions.

kind regards,
Vic

Thanks Vic,

I am just curious why it was done that way. I measure the NS distance as ~20% less than any other edge to edge distance.

Does this mean that units could theoretically travel EW faster than NS?

development has been so long it is refreshing to see this sort of fresh looks at such basic things like hex sizes :)

about the faster travelling...
i dont think so because basicly the hexes are almost squares of about 53 by 48 pixels.
Allowing for most monitor resolution width : height ratios i think this will work well.
even if there is a little quicker travelling horizontally and you think it is important this could be offset by making a scenario map thats slightly offset too.

Since the game works in terms of hexes rather than pixels, this shouldn't matter if the designer planned for uniform hexes.

As a scenario designer, you have to be aware of the hex ratios when building a map.  AT has a map overlay feature that 'stretches' a picture over the blank hexes that will become the map.  You should also know the picture dimensions (900 pixels by 800 pixels).  You know the hex dimensions (53 by 48).  You can then solve for the correct number of hexes to ensure the map is not distorted (60 by 59 is pretty close to distortion free).

Of course in really large maps, you have the natural distortion that occurs due to the curvature of the earth.

How do you do the map overlay thing in the editor?  There's no mention of that feature in the manual, and I can't find the option in the editor.

in the settings submenu there is a button called overlay. Click to select an overlay.
If you want to remove the overlay again click the button again but then press cancel instead of selecting a file
