More Questions !!??!!

Post by LetsPlay2 »

Let me try a new approach :

Suppose I do a replay start in 1903, Finaces on, I am Commish (Multiplayer), I make the deals according to retrosheet.

All teams Computer controlled with Commish having power:

Can the commish still make the trades as they happened even if finances are on ??

Will the Free Agents become free agents or do I have to release them ?

If so can I have each team select the frree agents they want or will AI decide that ??

The reason:
I would like the last place team to have first crack, of course with finances on it will change where players end up but thats ok !
Also it will influence the players that were SOLD as well I think !

If I allow AI trades and play solo mode, with player affinity on will the AI make trades with the affinity on ??

What do you think ??

I can help with some of this.

The key phrase is "Computer Control". If you have any or all teams under computer control, you can interpret this literally. The AI will make roster moves and financial decisions and you will be an observer. You can prevent trades, but not things like in-season releases and free agent signings. In this setup, the AI also makes the financial offers in the off-season. As Commissioner in this mode, you are basically the human being who clicks the mouse button and observes the AI play out every game and decision.

If you aren't going to manage games, but want complete control over your assn, you must go with Multiplayer and set every team as human-controlled. In your initial setup, you'll choose Multiplayer and be asked for a port number (FTP, I think). Simply ignore this request and proceed along.

After doing this, you will have control over all roster moves and financials. One really cool thing about this is that you can "Auto Adjust Rosters" as often as you want. This will allow the AI to make the lineup and rotation decisions. The only drawback to this is that the AI will promote/demote players without regard to what actually happened in real MLB. You will also have the option to set every team's Manager Tendencies to match real MLB, or use something generic for every team.

I've done this two different ways:

(1) I did Auto Adjust for each team twice a month, or after any DL move or trade. I lived with the consequences of any AI promotion or demotion. Rarely were there any moves I had any objection with.

(2) I set up with "No Injuries" and also did the "Auto Adjust" as mentioned in #1 above. Having a list of real MLB transactions handy, I simply "un-did" any move by the AI that did not match real MLB moves.

With Multiplayer, all teams under human control, you can also work your way around the trading deadline of August 1st two different ways. If there's a trade, simply make the roster moves via releases and signings. This will reflect on the player(s) card(s), so you can have a history. The other way would be to simply go into the "Edit Player" part of the card(s) and put the player(s) on the teams where you want them to be. This method would not reflect on the player card.

Addressing player affinity, I haven't personally used it at all. The concept sounds great, but I'm not sure it can be done in Multiplayer mode. Also, by use of Multiplayer/all teams under human control, I had already figured out my own way of "forcing" player affinity.

I interpret Player Affinity as the program making great efforts to get the players on the right team at the start of each season. I don't think it has any bearing at all on in-season moves. If you're playing in the 50's and 60's, you'll find it better to do all of this yourself with MP/human control. Teams typically added only 3-4 new young players before the season, but were known to make many, many trades during the season. You can mirror these trades yourself, and also import the new players quickly before spring training with MP/HC.

In summary, if you're going with MP and not actually involving other users, it is only logical to make all teams human-controlled. You can always switch any or all of them during the season if this is not your cup of tea.

A reminder: any Multiplayer choice, alas, takes away the ability to manage a team. At present, I'm in love with the managing aspect of the game. For any assn I do where managing is not desired, I use no other setup than MP/HC. This works great for me.

I hope you find this helpful and can get the same satisfaction I received in the past and will no doubt again receive in the future.
