Question About Battle File in RCG

Post by Redleg »

I have been altering the pre-sets and encountered a couple of things that are puzzling.

1. I remade "Soviet Infantry Battalion" with several changes When I saved this, I wound up with two "Soviet Infantry Battlion" presets listed in the campaign generator. I could pick either one of those and both would work. Only one of these appeared in the preset folder and any changes I made to it wouldn't "take". I finally got rid of the duplication by deleting both and replacing one of the files. Everything seems to work ok now except for below. Strange about the duplicate presets for the infantry battalion.

2. In the process of my changes, I deleted a Maxim MG.... every place that I could find it after the RCG crashed indicating there was a problem in the "Battle File" with Maxim MG. I have deleted the Maxim from Guns, Infantry, Presets. Even ran a search for "Maxim MG" and there was still no such weapon on the drive. Even so the RCG reports that the "battle file" still has a MG in it. I haven't figured out how to fix this yet.

Finally the question: I assume the "battle file" refers to one of the collection of scenarios that make up the several random campaigns available for use in RCG. Is this so? Will it be necessary to plow through all of those scenario files in search of a reference to this rogue MG?

Anyway thanks to my efforts, my random campaign generator is broken and I'd like to get it right so I can play some generated campaigns.

The random battle generator works fine now after the changes to the Soviet Infantry Battalion mentioned above.

Redleg, you will find that everything in PCK is tracked by its id which is not its filename.

In the preset xml in the header you will see an id field. This needs to be unique. The problem you were having is by just copying files without changing id they won't be unique.
2. In the process of my changes, I deleted a Maxim MG.... every place that I could find it after the RCG crashed indicating there was a problem in the "Battle File" with Maxim MG. Ummmm, probably wasn't a great idea to delete Maxim MG unit and gun data as many other stock scenarios and campaigns use that data. I hope you have backups! Not sure of your other problem is it in the RBG or RCG, I would have to see the files
Finally the question: I assume the "battle file" refers to one of the collection of scenarios that make up the several random campaigns available for use in RCG. Is this so? Will it be necessary to plow through all of those scenario files in search of a reference to this rogue MG?

Battle plans are like RBG templates or meta-scenarios. They essentially set up the RBG + allow extra defining parameters not available to normal RBG use. So they define points, core forces, presets, maps, setups, etc, etc, etc. The Maxim MG will be in the other presets. I personally would do a restore and if you didn't want maxim MG write your own presets (which you have done) and possible your own RCG.

Just as a side note:

There is a field call "desc" which you can place in the header of the preset in which you can include some text historical details on the outfit you are modelling. If you double click on the % force selection area (on one of the leaders) you get to see that text + a historical OOB. This gives you some idea of which units you are likely to face or use. You can also dbl-click on the map (to get a description) and on the PCK graphic lower left (to get a battle overview). The desc field was not filled out by Erik when he did these presets so it defaults to off.

Another point is that you can (as of the latest patch) add a max field to each platoon definition in the preset. This puts an upper limit on the platoon size if you have better historical data.
