Tank Aces Meet - Wittmann Rides Again

Post by Redleg »

A hypothetical battle between Wittmann's platoon of Stug III's and Dmitriy Lavrinenko's platoon of T34's. These two platoons meet on a frozen battlefield in November, 1941.

The three tank aces involved are in separate tanks of Elite quality. The other members of the platoons are of Veteran quality.

Lavrinenko was the top tank ace for the Allies in WW2 with 62 kills at the time of his demise near Moscow in November, 1941. In this battle, Lavrinenko is given an assist by another top tanker, Kolobanov Zinoviy.

Give this a try. I have played it several times from both sides and can attest that it is winnable from either side. It is also quite possible to lose.

How did you give different tanks of the same platoon different experience levels? This is one thing that Matrix has said they are pretty firm at standing behind not doing.

What did you do about naming them? I'll take a look at the scenario when I get a chance. I'm working on a pretty heavy scenario myself at the moment.

Redleg,

Without a doubt this is your best one yet. It is a well balanced, fast playing small scenario. The end result is in doubt until the victory/loss screen flashes up.

I played it from both sides, managing a decisive victory for both sides. On both attempts I lost one unit. I have tried to make a couple of Wittmann scenarios (one Stug and one Tiger) but your effort is far superior to mine. I am having problems getting the balance right.

Very well done. This scenario is a keeper, and I will play it again. I would love to see you do a Wittmann Tiger scenario. You are probably aware but there is some excellent background material at:

All the best,

Good job.

Thanks for the comments, guys.

Wittmann will be returning to meet further Russian foes but I plan to work more or less through time.  So will some of the other German Panzer Aces and of course, the Russian aces as well.

MR:  All I did to get a "platoon" with individually named tanks was to cheat! I made a 1 tank StugIII platoon and named it "Wittmann" and designated it "Elite".  Then took a 2 Stug section and named it generically and designated it "Veteran".  I don't think this will work well in full size battles except there are some real advantages to having larger numbers of small units vs few units of more tanks vis-a-vis, Russians.  Better odds of getting a unit in radio contact to spot artillery and better chances of keeping the grunts closer to their leader.

ROFL!!!!

I did the exact same thing with my scenario where he takes on 18 tanks himself. I made a 1 stug plt with him in it as an elite.

Good Hunting.

RL, I have put my first fully developed scenario here on the site.

It can be found here in the Mods/Scenarios section. The scenario is HSG Cats Claws.

You might be interested in my answer to the leadership/unit ID/naming debate.

I have playtested this scenario numerous times now and I really like the naming solution that I've come up with. See what you think.

Good Hunting.

Decisive Victory.

I played the T34s and Annihilated the Stug IIIE. The T34 1941 model was nearly invincible and I was fortunate to get alot of hull deflections (8-9cm sloped). The T34s 76.2mm was quite effective versus the Stug IIIE side armor which is mostly 3cm except for the tracks which are 2cm. My strategy was to commit 1 T34 and then attack the flanks of the German Assault Guns. Thank you for a very good scenario Redleg! The attachment is a screenshot of the victory screen. I added some infantry to both sides with the scenario editor. The snipers were added to improve the sighting for the AFVs. I placed a Russian sniper in the church for the +6 to sighting.
