Opinions on PureSim's AI?

Post by KG Erwin »

After managing several hundred games, I think that the AI GM/field manager is pretty good. Of course, the human can find ways to play tricks, but I establish certain ground rules just for the sake of fairness.

IMHO, the AI's overriding weakness is not knowing when to rest players. Of course, in a historical league, deploying a "best possible lineup" can be a tough proposition. The weaker teams often get themselves in a bind when they overuse tired players and have several of them end up on the DL.

Interesting, KG.

One of the main things I do when personally managing my lineups is to rest tired players, even if I have to replace them with not so optimum utility players.

I'm amazed at the game results using fresh players, even when they are 2nd stringers.

To the credit of the Pure Sim design is the color coded energy levels of the players that are easily visible in the lineups and roster management screen. That, along with the batting avgs all included right in the actual lineups themselves, makes managing the lineups in Pure Sim an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

I own a couple other baseball sims but Pure Sim definitely gives you the most convenient and informative interface, but still with plenty of depth as far as stat reports, etc.

Overuse of tired players is a big one. I've seen some strange substitutions/pinch hit instances, but not too many really. I see more in real life games on TV.

One thing I do fault the game for is the ability to trade/deal your way to an all star lineup. The price for A-list players is too cheap.
No problem Chief!

Overall, I'm very content with the AI.

There are times I question it when I get an off-the-wall trade offer. An example of this is when the AI is wanting to trade some so-so or poorly rated player for a really high rated player.

About the only other time I question the AI is at the end of the year awards. When I look at some of the ratings of the players listed, it makes me wonder how do someone with those ratings put up those kind of numbers!!

KG

Like you I play out most of my games and try to periodically rest key guys and I make an attempt at reasonable player usage. I don't like to see everyone in the primary lineups playing 154 games every year. I have found that player usage seems better with the AI in fictional leagues but I have no hard evidence to backup that opinion. The AI in PS is overall pretty good, I see trades I don't like and odd offers as someone else mentioned but overall I would give it about a "B". Frankly I don't know of any AI in any game that would get an "A" grade....It must be VERY tough to program this regardless of the game or sport.

BTW Shaun posted over on the Wolverine boards that he was wondering where all the interest is?? I few have posted but maybe more of those on this board should go over for a look.

Thanks
