Defensive Tactics in Game by Game Play

Post by KG Erwin »

For those of us who indulge in battling out every game, which tactics do you use? Which do you avoid?

For me, I use "infield in" rarely and "pitch around" sometimes. I also rarely call for a pitchout. I never bother with "guard lines" and never alter my outfield depth to "shallow" or "deep". I play defense conservatively, and tend to rely on my players' defensive skills. I think that the specialty defenses are too high-risk if you guess wrong.

KG,

Same here. I admit that I do occasionally attempt a pitchout and a reasonable number of intentional walks. A lot of this depends on the typical factors- who the batter is, the current score, how hot the batter is today (I don't care if he's hitting .217 on the year, if he's 3-for-3 today, I'm weary of throwing to him). I've given a handful of intentional walks, not many compared to real life MLB, and the occasional pitchout when I'm convinced the runner is going.

Still, I've had pitchouts and see the runner going but he STILL makes it in. Ah well... I suppose there's an X-Factor in everything.
