Post by _dozza_ »

O.k, is there something im missing, i creat a jock using the HQ program, make him as good is a can make him with the avail ble points, i then match up the skills he/she has with a titan that uses those skills. Then its off to battle and after few mins i find the enemy lock onto him and get ready to unleash hell, but suprise suprise my goddam jock misses lots and the enemy jock hits me from miles off {skill set to inferior} and hits me loads more times than my jock can hit him. Have i done something wrong or am i just plain bad plz someone HELP

Hey, don't despair, all the veterans here went through this when they first tried to learn the game.

Tips of hitting your opponent:

First things first - when you build your jock, try to get at least one kind of weapon in the 50 skill range, even if you have to hold off on the others. My pick for starting pilots is energy weapons, but that's just my bias - I always used to run out of ammo when I started out, and attempting a HTH titan usually ended in me getting destroyed *well before* I got to my opponent.

Next, get yourself a titan with a good scanner and battle computer. A successful scans gives you bonuses to hit. As a rookie, the sooner you can see your opponent and get a yellow or green scan on him, the sooner you'll be able to hit.

Also, try to start off with long range weapons. All weapons have hit penalties at max range. You'll get better hit bonuses as your opponent gets well within your range, so you'll want that 'sweet spot' as large as possible.

Tips to avoid damage:

Move. Running and dodging may take more time, but you get a defensive bonus for doing so. Same goes for jumping, crouching, being inside woods, etc. However, moving also gives you a penalty to hit, so you want to learn the art of evading while reloading and stopping when you fire.

Have a good ECM. ECM's hamper a scanner's ability to get good scans. A good ECM will delay your opponent for getting bonuses to hit you.

Recon skill. A good recon skill (50+, I think) wil give you extra defense bonuses when in woods, as well as speed up your travel in them.

General thoughts:
What Titans are you fighting with? Are you going against assaults? They all generally have ECM, Scanners, the works. If you didn't know how to activate your equipment and just went in guns blazing, I could see how the AI could nail you. Take some time to activate your ECM or shield at the start. Same goes for flares when missiles are flying at you. As you learn the art of warfare, you'll learn when it's ok to shut them off.

he's got some very good pts. another problem you (might) have is that you're used to dueling w/ more dangerous titans that're tougher and hit harder. rookies on recons are (very) lame. i remeber, when i first started i couldn't defeat the AI so i played myself for hours on end just so i could get my guys better. then when i got better and could spank the AI 70% of the time, i decided to start over and see if i could get up against the AI. my first guy got his head blown off. the second one (i think) got his legs torn off, and the third one ejected.

that's a great option for week guys: EJECT! that's how i usually get my guys more powerful. i start off, do as much damage as i can, and then as soon as i start getting badly damaged (usually if i have 3 yellows or a red) i'll slam that eject button as hard as i can (unless the edge of the maps is near, then i try to evade my opponent and make a bee-line for it). it may mean that i lose my first few battles (and titans) but after 3 or 4 of those my guys strong enough (usually) to start winning. also until your guys are pretty strong, IMHO (others will probably dissagree) it's best to fight AIs significantly weaker than yourself.

A simple way to greatly improve your hit chance:

Fire just after your move and right before your next ( use wait for move option ), until you are close to your opponent 3 hex or less . This way you are counted at 0 speed when firing = far better percentage ( at last twice much more and even more. ).

Also usefull is look whet your opponent is doing : try to have your weapon ready for when he is turning or moving slowly ( add a lot to your percentage ).

Or just hit 'wait on enemy locked' when he is moving. If he stops to fire or turn, hit him hard. It comes down to who fires first, so be sure to have a good reaction skill <img src="smile.gif" border="0">
