An oddity

Post by mudrick »

I am having a minor problem and am hoping someone can shed some light.

I have a few 4th down situations in the offensive profile. Not many, maybe 20, not too many where I could not easily keep track. But every time a team is down 1-3 points and there is under 3 minutes left in the game, they go for it instead of kicking a FG.

Now the odd thing is, if the time drops below 30 seconds and they are out of timeouts, they will kick the FG if they convert the 4th down. If they were down 4 points or more they would not do this.

My question is......what am I missing? I do not have any situation telling them to go on 4th down 1-3 points in FG range. I have NO situation with the statement of "DOWN BY ANY" What could be causing this?

well I see similar things from time to time
I dont think the problem is playbooks, IMO its AI or should I say the lack their of

just watched my Yellowknife lose by 2 points

could have won but for some reason they went for 2 when they didnt need too
then did it again on the next score, failing both times

then with 28 seconds to go having just scored a TD
and needing the 2 to tie things up, they kick the single............. absolutely crazy
..... and to top it off we missed the single aswell [&:]

Kicks and time outs would be nice to have in the profile.

There is a need for an AI, but having an override would be useful.

Have you tried the situation tester to see what profile group it is accessing in that situation?

Thanks micvik, it was accessing situations for teams down by 11+.  Maybe removing them will solve the problem.

BTW, I have already removed the 2 point play from my league.  Someone mentioned an override, that would be a good option.

I know we went over this in beta when some changes were being made to the gameplan.  How it should work is that the game will check the gameplan for a specific situation, then check for a general situation, and then use the AI.  You may have a case where a general situation is not allowing the AI to do a kick, and since one cannot set a kick in the gameplan, there is no kick.  Either that, or the AI doesn't think 3 minutes out is as important as 30 seconds out for getting that kick off.  I'm not sure when the AI would override the gameplan.  David tweaked that in a later build, but I don't think he posted what changes were made.

Now the odd thing is, if the time drops below 30 seconds and they are out of timeouts, they will kick the FG if they convert the 4th down. If they were down 4 points or more they would not do this.

It reads like the AI is kicking in here.  It would be nice to be able to set a must kick field goal time in the gameplan, playbook, or constants like we can with field goal distance.  I don't have the information on how the AI has it set.

Sounds like the code is reversed there.  Do you see this with all Canadian rules games?

I'll have to get back to ya on that one Marauders

I'm only on week three in my league
first time I've ever actually played the game properly

to many bugs previously for me even to try
then I had my roster to write up and stuff
all while making uniforms and re-painting stadiums for the community
then had the constants file to workout and test (done that now)
and phaff around with playbooks

Finally I'm at a point where I'm happy to play and have the time
actually seeing some pretty good football played out apart from the issue I mentioned with the 2 pointers.

so I'll let you know if I keep seeing it over and over
but hey, I guess its the same for all the teams in the league (if it does keep happening)
so things should even themselves out in the end as far as results go.

Actually I checked and it was using the "down by 11+" situations for 0-30, 30-1, and 1-3 minutes.  I took them out and now they kick.  However, they no longer go for it when they are down by 11 or more.  But that's much better than the other problem.  And since I took the 2 point play out, it really no longer matters.

Another odd situation.  USA pro football.

A WR catches the ball at the 2 yard line and gets hit.  He fumbles the ball into the endzone where it rests near the sideline.  A defender picks it up and his momentum carries him out of bounds.  They called a safety.  Shouldn't that be a touchback?  Defenders ball at the 20?

it might well be a safety, defender recovers in his own endzone
and steps out out of bounds before entering the field of play, I think that is a safety by rule
because he stepped out of bounds in his own endzone while in possesion

same applies to punters on an endzone punt - if he steps off the field of play in the endzone - safety for other team

If the defender recovers the football in the endzone and never establishes possession in the field-of-play (i.e., never leaves the endzone), it should be considered a touchback.

possesion in maxfootball isnt an issue
either he has it or he doesnt, thats the way game is
so the defender picks up the ball, its his ball
he steps out------Safety

I think we would be being more than a little picky
actually wanting him juggling the ball in MF to raise the possesion question

That is correct.  The player would have to bring the ball out and back again to have it be a safety.

Even on a kick off, the kick returner can run around in the end zone and get tackled, and it is still a touchback.

No game is going to get every nuance of every rule situation covered.  It would be nice to have this set to the specifics of the rule, but I don't think it will be.
