Historically, yes. 8" could penetrate the armour of older battleships, and 5-6" could do the same for most cruisers. In addition, CD emplacements were much, much more accurate and better protected than ship-mounted guns, so "no sailor but a fool would attack a fort with a ship."

However, in WitP... [;)]

Not really.  the portable CD units for Japan I think have only 5.5" guns.  None of which will do much to Allied BBs or CAs.  They MIGHT be able to ding some of the older CLs (maybe the Omahas or Adalaide or the RN "D-class" CLs).

The fixed CD guns, like at Yokosuka and maybe Palau and others, have 8" guns which would do a number on CA/CLs but not going to do much vs. BBs.

The AI tried to bombard Bataan early in my 1941 Campaign game for some really strange reason, using nothing but heavy cruisers (the DD's didn't bombard).  Needless to say, the CD guns did their job and every one of the ships in that TF that bombarded took multiple hits, with several on fire and reduced in speed.

The only time I had that happen to me as the Allies was when I tried to bombard Saipan with a mixed TF of cruisers and DD's and forgot to turn off the "escorts bombard" toggle.  I think I lost 4 or 5 DD's to those guns there.

BTW, has anyone pointed out the Wake Island CD guns at the start of the Campaign game are 155mm and not 5"?  I was a little surprised to see the wrong size guns there when I started that scenario.

I don't have the DB editor in front of me, but either way, it could be that the 5" guns immediately (or nearly immediately) upgraded to 155mm guns.  The upgrades generally look for the lowest sequenced unit, with ample supply and ample replacement devices, and then upgrades.

Yes, it looks like they might have quickly upgraded. In the editor for Scen 15 Stock, they have 5" CD guns (which will then upgrade to 155mm Field Guns).

Those are slightly smaller than 6", so I would not expect them to be of much value against the BBs in this game.

the 240mm guns in some forts might do some damage to battleships and cruisers. Otherwise, the best CD gun the japanese have is the G4M2 and B5N

i think there are in CHS in the Home Islands and a few other places... another reason to play CHS (and its derivatives) over stock. [8D]

Historically (non-stock) the Japanese had some 12" and 15" rifles from capital ships that were scrapped or converted to carriers under the Washington Treaty deployed at Tsushima, Tokyo, Osaka, and some other places in the home islands.  The other point is that they had some short-ranged howitzers in the 240 mm to 305 mm range that would have delivered all their fire as plunging hits.  Outside the Home Islands and the Tsushima Strait, the biggest thing they had was an 8" gun.  The other thing on Japanese coastal defenses is that they heavily mined the approaches to the Inland Sea, Tokyo Bay, and the strait between Honshu and Hokkaido with 10,000+ mines each.  If you wanted to do that in the game, you'd be running your ML's non-stop just to maintain those barricades.

The flaw in the plan was that there were twice as many mines floating around that had recently been dropped by B-29s! [;)]
