tanks getting tracked!

Post by STIENER »

the tanks getting tracked is still an issue......it still just happens WAY TOO MUCH. not historcal at all.....tanks are made for going off road. im reading about the offensive in the ardennes as we speak.....panzer battles of the SS by Willy Fey, a german panzer ace,......they used the raods until they ran into trouble and then went off road.....all the time..drove thru rivers and paralled the raised roads to use as cover...went across fields and thru woods and never got tracked much....battle damage ..yes.....they werent idiots about it im sure [ gee fritz think we can climb that snowy blufff with our panther?? gee i dunno heinz, lets try it... [:-] ]

one excerpt in the book tells how a panther got ambushed crossing a field and took 30 + a/t rounds to the front armour. they couldnt see the a/t gun so they had to back out of the fight......they did take track damage they said BUT they could still move and backed out of the a/t guns field of fire. they said the weld on the top of the front armour plate had started to crack!!!!! and the green radio operator was having a nervous break down because all the a/t rounds were hitting the armour in front of HIM!!

in WAR you cant go 50 feet without losing a track......its just stupid. and im being carefull about where im going....im NOT crashing thru the woods!!!
im pretty sure im not the only one that thinks pehaps we need to look into it again.

you won't get tracked crossing a snowy field or on a road.

There are no elements there that will give a chance to get tracked.

I spent ages trying to get tracked to demonstarte that repairs work in this thread.

This was trying my hardest on the most likely terrain.. almost drove me mad 'cause the tracks wouldn't come off.

i got tracked and not just once a few times by driving across a snowy field and crossing a single tree line. it shouldnt happen there IMHO. i aso think i got tracked going thru shell holes form a previous games bombardment.

tanks are built for this kind of stuff..thats why there called tanks........there should be less than a 3% chance of getting tracked unless your driving for the whole game in heavy woods.....and i mean heavy woods ...not brush.

i can move 10 tanks thru the woods and get 80% of them tracked. and quite frankly ...i can live with getting tracked in the woods....not in brush and not in shell holes and not crossng a single tree line or a fence. it just didnt happen.

i havent had problems with tanks coming back repaired......it looks to me like 40% DO come back.

Stiener do you have the latest patch installed? How has it been since the last patch? I believe in the patch notes they stated they made getting tracked occur less....

yes i do have the latest patch.........its better than it was but it still happens way too much. you couldn't even think about going into the woods or brush or across a tree line before.

Stiener,

I see your point, but note that some people like it like it is (I do), and this behavior is mod-able.

I have the latest patch, and I still find I get tracked quite a bit in the woods. Out of 5 battles in which I had 5 or 6 vehicles, I would say I send at least 3 vehicles through some woods in every one of those battles. Not talking a several hundred meters _trek_ through woods, just passing through a tree line or a 30m wide swath of woods. I would say I have had at least one if not two vehicles tracked every one of those 5 battles. Thus, at a 'moderate' degree of offroading into woods, I'm getting rate of about 1 to 1.5 tracked vehcles per 3 vehicles sent offroading per battle (all guesstimates).

Given, as Steiner points out, these things were MADE to crash through brush, buildings, fences, etc. that still seems a bit frequent.

Also AT guns, and towned Infantry guns move a bit too slow.

The whole idea is you don't send your vehicles through the woods... it is supposed to be impossible... it is the Ardenne.

First thought was to make those areas impassable completely...just Like Deep water.

But the design allows you to take that risk if you think you might be able to pull off the impossible and make a surprise flanking move.

This is your choice..

andrew........we are not sending are tanks thru the woods. if we do, we realize we can get tracked in the woods. thats a reasonable expectation.
what is happening is we are getting tracked going thru BRUSH and TREE LINES and FENCES and SHELLHOLES.
we know its the ardennes.....
1st hand accounts of the battles tell us what the panzers were capible of and what they were doing and there tactics. the 1st hand accounts dont say that they started an attack on going thru a large field in a spear head formation with 6 panthers and after going thru the tree line part way up the field had to stop the attack because 4 panthers got tracked. because it didnt happen.

1st hand accounts DO say.........2 panthers in the platoon started to cross the road and got knocked out by a/t fire. another panther seeing this used better use of the terrain and crossed the road farther away, THEN used the raised road as cover and drove down the side of the road [ yes along the ditch ...over the rocks...over logs and brush etc etc ] till he was able to outflank the sherman and a/t gun by going thru the fence and into the field and destroy the enemy.

guess what were still trying to say is theres still issues with tracking in the game. [;)]

Brush, leaves and Brush, Leaves and snowy brush etc give zero chance of being tracked ... same as a road.

Snowy field zero chance

If you try and knock down trees the chances of damage increase with the size of the tree.

Shellhole chance is zero

Rubble  surrounding the hole have a very low chance  ... the highest chance is less than 5%

Fair enough. But why can the AI start out by placing his AT Guns and Tanks _Deep_inside forests then!? [:)]

andrew ....lets be realistic here....ok i agree the chance should increase with the size of the tree. BUT ..the realistic part here would be......a panther can knock down a very big tree...they test the tanks knocking down tree's..ive seen historical footage of the testing. so the panzer needs to go thru a tree line and theres tree's in the tree line..go figure eh...so do you really think they are going to knock down a tree if they can go around it?? or if they have to knock down a tree do you think maybe there gonna pick a tree the size they no they can roll over? and do you think there gonna knock it down with there tracks?? no i think not.........probably gonna knock it down with the BIG FRONTAL armor part of the tank????
IMHO take the tree lines out of the picture.......no chance of tracking......playabilty VS realism here. this is painfull.
oh ya....ask general jack or oddball if im BSing anyone here. there on your team and helped build this game...........i play this game with jack.

The design is for you to not drive through trees.

Do so at your own risk... it sounds like you like to take too many risks...

If I hit you on the head enough maybe, just maybe  you will stop driving through trees.

the design is flawed. thats the hole point of having the forums is it not. ive proved my point by quoting a resouce plus have logged many hours playing the game.
by hitting me on the head enough, will only stop me from buying / wasting my money on the next one.

Sorry you've proved nothing.

You've written a lot but said nothing.

The design works as designed.

Forests are impassable in most instances.... you keep telling me that and I'm happy.

Tanks can knock over trees... how big are the trees?

What % of breakdowns have you quoted for various sized trees?

What % of breakdown have you quoted for anything.

I've got sources that quote 25% breakdowns on roads... but I think that would be a game breaker.

Please don't start complaining that you can't drive your tanks through houses... I know there are sources that said it was done.

No one would try and drive their tank through this:

you guys are awesome  [&:]........a tree line is not a forest....you guys designed the maps....they look like a line of tree's....single tree's????????
ive proved my point more than most people who take the time to write in here and try to improve the game. its about playabilty VS realism. if you guys arent interested then so be it.....good luck with holding onto your job when we dont buy the next game. and thats what its coming to. trust me. im not wasting any more of my time.

oh ya......incase your blind......the tree's around the houses.....single tree's in a line.......tree line. a panther can knock them over.it could probably drive between them too.............but not in your version of the game.
