A lost ship! (maybe)

Post by tigercub »

Akitsushima it carried one kawanishi Mavis, Ship: 4,650tons 4 five incher DP guns speed 19 knots Finished 30.4.42 ....sunk 24.9.44 is this ship in AE?
This is an important in some ways because of the plane it carried sure only 1 plane but it can do very long range spotting with the Mavis.

Afaik the mavis thing is a bit of a myth. While it was capable of loading it on board it didn't carry it around. Only for maintenance you see.

Not a myth, as such, but most certainly overblown. As you say, it was only put on board for repair.

US AV's didn't carry PBY and PBM's for catapult launch either, you know.

I do know that it did not launch the Mavis they was no need but i have not read any were that it did not carry it wile moving, but in saying this there no need to carry them also they can fly. This ship gives them a place too station and Mavis can refuel, rearm and repair. its and important ship in the early war.(the question still begs )is it in AE?

It was in WITP as well afaik. And you can use it as a regular AV, station it at some atoll or dot hex and transfer a patrol plane unit in.

I dont get what your asking Tigercub?? All AV/AVD etc in stock WitP allow flying boats to refuel, rearm, repair, etc. This is no different as far as i can tell.

Or am i missing the point?

BTW, are you really living in Charters Towers? Must be lonely when you have 'WitP player get togethers' out there!!

Again: she wasn't carrying it around, she was just able to work on it like any tender did, but she was especially made to supply flying boats for long range (possibly offensive) operations, carrying fuel, bombs, & all. Although there are people saying that they could actually get the plane on the deck to work on it, there's nothing that make us believe it was ever considered to turn her into a flying boat carrier. Man, do you really picture such a ship carrying an Emily (!!!) across the Pacific?! If they did it in real, Im waiting for anything serious to prove it - knowing how pointless it may be, those planes having the needed endurance to cross a large part of the Pacific ocean by themselves...

Actually submarines were used as a refueling stop-over for H8K flying boats that made bombing runs on Pearl Harbor. This did occur at least once on March 4, 1942, with the submarines waiting at the French Frigate Schoal to refuel the H8Ks.

Akitsushima could have been used in a similar manner (all AVs could for that matter), though it would be very hard to model in game. After all, unless the game was more 'real time' how would you tell the H8Ks to land half way home for fuel? So you can see why this ability while very historically accurate is not available in game.

yes they did, but well it's like the Doolittle raid story - we just have to sit on that, although sitting on the H8K raids over Pearl Harbor seems easier to me [;)]

Ha! Where's your sense of adventure? Don't tell me an AFB wouldn't look forward to having free shots at big, fat, slow-moving ducks. Gentleman, duck season is open...
