FIrst time player - Scenario suggestion

Post by bcbarnes »

First time player for WiTP - I've gone through the tutorial, and would like to start playing one of the scenarios. As is probably normal, I am a bit overwhelmed by the number of units to deal with. Can someone suggest a fairly simple scenario with a limited number of units that I can experiment with for my first few forays into this game?

First off - Welcome to the game and the forum.

Secondly - I know what you mean. I remember feeling the same way when I got started. It gets better. After a while, you'll be more concerned with when more of your units arrive then with dealing with the ones already in play.

Thirdly - I'd recommend the Coral Sea scenario, #3 I think. It's the smallest one available, both in terms of map size and number of units. It also runs only 14 turns, so you'll be able to finish a game in a short period of time. Then, after you make the inevitable 40 or so mistakes, run it again and try to do things better. I'd also start with the Allies. They are much harder to win with in this scenario, but they are much easier for a first timer to play - they start with maybe 1/3 the number of units the Japanese do. Play a few times as both sides until you get either bored or comfortable enough with the mechanics that you feel ready to move on to something bigger.

Lastly - Keep the questions coming if you have them. There are lots of very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable folks on here who will be glad to help you out. Again, welcome, and good luck.

Thanks, Quixote - those were exactly the kinds of suggestions I was looking for.

Coral Sea is nice for naval combat and naval logistics. If you want to jump into ground combat a little more and still kick some Japs Ass, try Manchuria Scenario (August Storm) [:)]

Dive right into the big scenario [:D] that is what I did... Played as the Americans, and you can do so much and start over and keep doing it, there is so much stuff to just play with... worked for me, and I'm still learning....

BTW, it's best to start with a small scenario like mentioned above....

Enjoy and welcome!
Life is tough. The sooner you realize that, the easier it will be.

If you want to "get your feet wet" in the campaign:

Start "the big one" (Scen 15, or whatever it is).  Take control of ONLY the India/Burma zone (ie UK and India).  Set everythign else to computer control.  Running the Brits will give you a taste of land, air, and sea; and shouldn't explode your head.

Don't worry that the computer is doing stupid things in the other theaters, it's just playing itself, who cares.  The point is to learn in a limited sand-box.
