Tactical Situation Question

Post by Wrathchild »

From watching baseball I've learned that when a runner is on 3rd the infield will often come in to prevent the runner from scoring. I've heard the announcers refer to the times that they don't come in as staying at 'double play depth'. I understand that this means that they are willing to concede the run in an attempt to get 2 outs. What I'm not sure of is what double play they are attempting to get. Would the offense at least have to have a runner on 1st for this to be effective? Would the infield ever stay at double play depth if it's just the runner on the 3rd and the batter?

I seldom call special defensive plays, but I do pay attention to my defensive ratings. With one out and runners at the corners, I may call for "infield in". However, if the runners are not speedsters, I may elect for a standard defense. This is considered to be at "double play depth".

As for "guarding the corners", I've never been able to figure out the usefulness of that setup. Never use it. I also NEVER call for an intentional walk. A "pitch around", yeah, I'll do that on occasion.

I will sometimes walk a particularly strong hitter if first base is open and there are 2 outs. I've had situations where I doesn't not to walk him and he caused me much distress. I use Guard the Lines near the end of games when I want to prevent the opposition from sneaking the ball past my infielders. I'm assuming that Puresim takes the infield position into consideration during these times.
