Game Locking Up
Game Locking Up
Well, this is disappointing. Twice now I've had the game "freeze" on me. Oddly enough, it occurs on the same date...August 1st, 1940. First game had this happen last night, when I was playing Germany. Tonight, playing the Allies...the game did it again.
I re-opened the game tonight after the lockup, re-loaded the autosave and tried to resume the game. But no go...it froze again at the same spot (after cycling through all the PP's/research screens for each country). For the fun of it, I reloaded the game yet again, reloaded the auto-save and tried one more time. You guessed it...the game locked up again.
I have no clue why this is happening. I have no other programs on my computer that cause any lockups (my CPU is Windows Vista/4GB RAM/2.5Ghz/256 Video Card). And all my other matrix games (WiTP and War Between the States) play just fine.
Both times this has happened I've been playing the Grand Campaign game. Thus...I've gone over 40 some turns without any problems, but then...whamo! Instant lockup as soon as the date strikes August 1, 1940, in the game.
Any clue what might be going on? More helpfully, any suggestions on how to work around it??
Edit...Uploaded the ConsoleOut file that others have been asked for.

RE: Game Locking Up
I tried it one more time...and it locked up again. I compared the "console out" files from this lockup and the previous one (that I uploaded). They were identical...the console out file "stopped" at the "Calculating Research" line. Seems that is where the bug is...something is happening when calculating research that causes the game to freeze at that point in August 1940.
Also, I should add...while the game is locking up, my computer isn't. One nice thing about Vista...one program that freezes doesn't freeze your whole computer!
Another edit...I have DirectX 10 on my computer.
While this doesn't seem video related, below is some DirectX info for my system.

RE: Game Locking Up
Those kind of bugs are the worst... everything is OK at my version of ToW. The only weird thing is that sometimes there is no dialog and I must click anywhere to see next one, we will investigate this and also look closer at research calculation code, because as I remember someone else had also some problems with this.
I found a bug responsible for "must click to see next dialog", but if in your case clicking doesn't help, I will search for something else.

Thanks Bleck.
Look forward to getting this bug fixed...or at least a way to work around it.

RE: Game Locking Up
On my WinXP SP3/DirectX 9 Machine: I loaded your autosave and played it. I'm sure I didn't duplicate everything you might have done. That said, at one point I thought the turn had locked as I couldn't do anything (cursor wouldn't move) but after a short while, some information boxes popped up and I was able to continue. Is it possible that if you waited longer, your game might continue?

RE: Game Locking Up
I downloaded your save file and found that clicking on the display, even though there was no dialog seemed to bring a dialog up. I got the Barbarossa questions and some naval battles, and then a normal German turn. Please try this "clicking nowhere" technique to see if it drives the game forward for you.

RE: Game Locking Up
Hi,
Well, this is a very strange bug indeed...but the problem can be worked around. What happens is that my mouse completely freezes on August 1st, 1940 as it enters the research phase (and, oddly enough, August 1st, 1941). However, after waiting a few seconds, I can then start pounding on my trackpad on my laptop...seems enough clicks on my trackpad unfreezes things. Why the game suddenly doesn't recognize the mouse...well, I have no idea!
What I find weird is that it only happens on the August 1st turn (both 1940 and 41 so far).

RE: Game Locking Up
i have the same problem.... this was a problem on the old version.... thats why i stopped playing it.... game crashes on a certain turn everytime on 2 different computers-- what a piece of junk
RE: Game Locking Up
prinzeugen, try to act as it was described in previous posts. Anyway the issue will be solved in next patch. If you couldn't workaround it now, it means that there is something else. If so then pleases attached your savegame and consoleOut.txt so we will examine it and find cause and solution. We are here to help, so please give us some constrictive guidelines.
Btw a lot of people played RtV for quite a long period time. The game was stable after initial patches and there was no more CTD reports. If you say it was the same in RtV this is very weird... Why didn't you report it?

RE: Game Locking Up
Problem (almost...) solved ! I reinstalled the game without any mod, then patched it and changed my mouse driver too (a Logitech trackball actually). It's working without freezing now (I was about to write "flawlessly" but, well, you know... [:D] ). Anyway, it still shows some weird behaviour, like a flickering pop up window from time to time. I'm having some problems with the "Fleet" screen too. The scrolling from top to bottom and left to right is sometimes verrryy slooow. Most of the time everything's okay then, suddenly, it becomes almost unusable with no apparent reason.

RE: Game Locking Up
locks up at this stage for me too, what is the workaround you mention, clicking doesnt seem to help(only have a touchpad) and the pointer is frozen, noticed occasional slow responses from mouse earlier in the game
great game though apart from that

RE: Game Locking Up
Initially I had many problems with that game. Maybe they were due to my Press version, I really don't know. Then, when the patch was released, I decided to re-install everything, wiped out every mod and changed my mouse driver (Logitech Trackball - reinstalled it though, since it doesn't seem to cause any trouble). Don't really know what the problem was but it seems to have been fixed properly !
Since then, I've been able to play a fair bunch of turns, with each scen. of the list, without experiencing a single glitch ! Well, not exactly true though [:D] I still experiment something like a screen refreshing bug, from time to time, when I close a session to return on the main screen. But it only happened three or four times in a week of gaming and that's not a freezing bug anyway, so...
Don't know if it may help here but all I can sincerely say is that : this game is now pretty stable on my rig :
-Asrock AliveDual-eSata2
-Athlon X2 5600+
-2GB RAM Kingston
-Radeon X1950 Pro 512MB
-SoundBlaster Audigy 2
-HDD WD Raptor/Samsung
-Trackball Logitech
-WinXP Pro SP3
-Each and every driver up to date
