Need Help Attacking

Post by Bronze »

I cannot attack Wheeling, WVa as the CSA. My activated army is south in Parkersburg and the activated units all have move values somewhere between 3 and 7. These same units have been pushing the enemy out of the state during winter.

Also, further out west in Bowling Green, I am unable to get activated calvary to move into Louisville to scout - the same unactivated units were able to do so earlier in the game.

All units are in supply and both stacks have activated army commanders in them. It is April of '64. Not using CSC and level hard.

Okay, there are several other places I can not attack into with activated armies (even the activated ACs cannot move into): Savannah from Jenkins and Joplin from Springfield.

Playing as the CSA version 1.4.

What am I missing?

I would have to see a save game to hope to figure it out. You can send one to 2by3@2by3games.com.

Thank you for your quick reply - the most recent saved game is on the way - let me know if you want me to go through and find others illustrating the earlier inabilities to move.

Of course I might just be missing something real simple......

Ok, the problem is you are in the react phase and can't enter enemy areas. You have to wait till the regular move phase to attack.

Hmmm, I've been trying through several turns to move that group (and in the other situations as well - sometimes this hasn't been an issue). Plus, I can move them many places on the screen that I wouldn't be able to do when trying to move them into Savannah. And when I had the game loaded before I could attack into Port Royal, just not Savannah. I sent the autosave file which saves at the reaction phase but promise I was trying in the normal move cycle - in trying now I can move them - must have something to do with shutting down the computer since trying previously and reloading the game. In the Wheeling example, I could move troops with enough movement points from Parkersburg to Grafton and then move click them into Wheeling, just not directly from Parkersburg to Wheeling.

Thank you for your time in looking into this.

Just responding in general, and not to address your specific problem, sometimes it is a mystery to me why units don't activate and why I can't get activated units to move where I want them to, and why sometimes I can get units to move places it seems they should not be able to move.  I've figured some things out over time, and I have read threads enough to know that I could probably go into the rules book and do some math and figure out what was going on, and it can be very complicated when all the possible factors come into play.  But instead I play the game at a level where I don't worry about the numbers.  I just curse the incompetence of the officers who won't do what I want them to do and chalk it up to the friction of war.    Or sometimes I see something obvious, like, okay, it's winter, and he can move here because there is a road but not here because there is no road.   I also notice it is easy to make careless mistakes.  A couple of times I've accidentally put infantry units in a cavalry formation, for example, and that most definitely slows them down.  So I watch things like that more carefully.  Not a direct answer to your problem, but a comment in general.
