how do you use recon helicopters?

Post by larryfulkerson »

Hey you guys are there any specific tactics to use with Recon helicopters? I'm under the impression that you put them where ever you want to search and you get better recon in those hexes up to 25 hexes away. Correct? Somebody save me from a search through the manual.

I read somewhere that humans eat more bananas than monkeys and I believe it's true because I don't remember the last time I ate a monkey.

And while we're talking about recon helicopters..........why in the world would a scenario designer lump recon and heavy lift assets in with combat fighters ( Cobra's in the picture below ) . Won't the recon and heavy lift assets suffer losses along with the Cobras in combat?

And while we're talking about combat with helicopters........why will my AH-1 attack the bottom target but not the top one? ( see picture below )

Larry,

Here's what I've got: http://forums.gamesquad.com/showthread. ... elicopters . This is an '09 discussion we had on the subject.

Your attention to posts #30 and #34, please.

I can't at the moment remember correctly, but I'm thinking that helicopter recon isnt something that happens in every hex in range, at least while in the start-up of a mission. It's more of a 'get's covered over time' situation, eh? I know that the little beggars take some time to work in!

Which scenario are you using, I'd like to test this my own self, lol! [;)]

I'm playing The Next War 1979 with ToawFan PBEM and we're on turn 4 already. I'd publish an AAR about it but ToawFan doesn't want the world to know in case he loses. I used to feel that way too, so I respect his wishes.

The battle of Medjerda is almost forgotten, but was fought against highly disciplined German troops and blasted a route straight to Tunis it was a perfect infiltration battle and should be remembered as the best fought British battle of the war.

Yeah but to turn on the use of NUKES you gotta pay a penalty of 100 points or something like that. I didn't want to spend the points. Plus I'm alergic to Nuclear weapons.

Gotta be tough PBEM'ing a "Legion of Merit" opponent for your firs shot at the scenario. Experience is a good teacher. I found out I was playing the designer in 2 or 3 different scenarios. I think he found out he was slumming![;)] However to be fair, I learned a lot very fast (first couple of games (3 different scenarios) were rather short.[8|]

We're not really playing to "win" ....it's more like I'm walking through the scenario with my opponent to give him some tips and pointers and to look at the moves he made and make suggestions and give praise when it's warrented. And it's warrented a lot. He's a better player than he thinks.

EDIT: I did a test and verified that when you lump non-combat fighters in with combat fighters both suffer losses. So it's not a really really good idea to lump those kinds of assets together.

Does anyone know if air superiority has any effect on recon helicopters?

I figure that if the enemy has air superiority then it just might be too dangerous to fly recon helicopters since they just might get shot down. I lost 50 out of 50 AH-1 helicopters flying CS missions just last night. I learned pretty quickly that YOU have to have air superiority in order to be able to fly helicopters.

This is one of those places where the 'AirWar' rules for toaw suffer! One would imagine that air superiority assets based close enough would reverse the 'air supperiority' count, but it appears to NOT be the case. All these things appear to be based globaly, instead of in a section.

Sux! At least Ralph has something on his plate for the next version of ToaW, eh? (ToaW IV)

So if you leave your recon helicopters sitting in a good spot for gaining info, will they take losses from enemy air-superiority, even if you don't move the counter around?

Presumably....methinx that some of this will be part of the designer's understanding of the situation, eh? I'd also think that it's about time to do some serious testing again due to the 3.4 patch....just to ensure that things still work the same as befor!

Nothing about the 'AirWar' has been changed in so far as I know, but ya can never tell, eh? [;)]

One would imagine that putting in atks on 'fighter' airbases might tend to lower the harm to one's helos, but this could be wishfull thinking, LOL!

I'm getting slightly more confidence thanks to wonderful patience and training by Larry for the new kid on the block.

We're planning a rematch and switching sides in the Next War 1979, so maybe I can help post some AARs with him for the first time in my life. Gulp.

Which side did you play? Larry is killing my Warsaw Pact. Absolutely eating me up. I've lost 7,037 of my 7,478 T62 tanks and we're not even to turn 10 yet.

And Larry says he's not playing to win. Hmm. Can I have about 7,000 tanks back? I think it's wonderful that you guys with all of this experience would be so helpful.

As I learn more about this game, I become more impressed with just how thorough the realism is. You really must think as a commander. You can't just start moving all your icons forward. Well, you can, but then Larry kills all 7,000 of your favorite tanks.

I played as NATO and got whacked, air power is very important in modern scenarios also Larry is an experienced player so beware you need to break his line then he is on the back foot and his units are not dug in then they are more vulnerable to your Tank and MRDs.
WP have got to go for it and win the game early try not to get into a battle of attrition or you will lose, because of the time scale of the scenario you wont get a lot of replacements and no units will reconstitute.
Good luck.
