At the mercy of the AI

Post by Bingeling »

There is little traffic here, so I pondered if I should try something after my latest game ended (a final proof of concept when 45 transport with 60 troops each took out a 20-30 planet nation in one swipe)...

So here comes, not with a lot of entertaining role playing, but maybe people find it fun to read through a struggle with the AIs diplomacy rule?

The idea behind is to run only the armed forces. That is the military ships. AI is allowed to do design, research, colonization, taxes, spying, declaring war, declaring raiding...

Some things (like war and raiding) may be on suggest, as to allow me to notice when things happen... Colonization the same, so that I can move armed ships to the system in advance.

What I will do is hire military ships (explorers and constructors on AI suggestor's advice), and run them myself. I can of course use auto if I want to. I decide if they are to be retrofitted, but the department of planetary security is responsible for space ports and things like defensive bases. I may overrule on troop recruitment, but will start on auto (and probably stay there).

The idea is to get a feel for how hard it is to be the AI :-)

Galaxy settings:

700 stars in irregular galaxy.
Occasional colony prevalence
Young Expansion
Restless Aggression
Very expensive research
Normal space creatures and pirates.

Empire settings:

Normal home system.
Starting size.
Starting tech.
Normal corruption

Random race, random government.
Why is there no option to have "default color for race"?

Opposition:

9 AI empires, all are "young" as size. Five are tech level 1, the remaining 4 are starting. Normal home systems. Idependent alien colonies may start new empires. Race, Government, and proximity are all random.

Victory conditions:

They are set at 99% so that I can see the rankings, but I play as long as I like to...
No story lines.

Empire Policy is default settings with everything at automatic other than.
The two diplomacy parts are suggest, but I will always say "yes".
The same with new colonies.
The only guide to research is overall focus "raw power"
Construction are "suggest" but I will only interfere on military ships.
War & attacks and fleet formations are manual

And the start is:

Image

This concludes the opening post, but I have more ready to be typed. I want to fight with one image at a time :-)

I notice weak troops, high growth, slow research...

RE: At the mercy of the AI

2 escorts, 2 frigates 3 destroyers are handed out. Not much of a fleet...

The starting location (a bit down right from the middle, not too easy to see).

Image

Not exactly crowded... The good part is that it is not likely to have enemy colonies very close :-)

The start.

Until anything war like happens, ships are on auto. After 5 seconds on 4x speed a kaltor attacked. Both escorts lost, one was damaged and scrapped (I don't like them, and don't want a constructor to waste time on it). Afterwards the 3 destroyers are declared the Home Fleet, having a total whopping 75 fire power.

Luckily the research department are researching torpedoes (and bigger construction yards and swamp colonization). Research is not remotely close to potential. With an energy research center, the cap is at 571K, and the research is 30+30+113...

First pirate attack. Home fleet is in the neighbor system, like the two auto frigates. One mining station lost, and the pirate escapes. Clumsy captains on the home fleet ships are blamed and fired after landing too far away. A second pirate attack in same system as Home Fleet, and is killed just before the mining station's shield run out. Slow, slow fleet... Pirate destroyer lands on top of the fleet, and is destroyed before a depleted mining station can be damaged (shields are low since the last attack).

Pirate den located:

Image

That is the extent of my early operations...

The whole navy (3 destroyers and 2 frigates) are now in the home fleet and are sent to exterminate the pests. Pitiful firepower leaves some excitement in the operation.

Image

More careful admirals may have dispatched that frigate first, but we are happy go lucky. We find 7215 credits in the wreckage, and manage to kill the pirate frigate as well. The frigates are released to automatic duty, and the fleet heads back home to refuel and get drunk.

Note to self, avoid slow frigates in destroyer fleets, frigates have only 1 reactor, not enough to power the hyper drive, destroyers have two. I hire 3 more destroyers.

Another pirate base, with a sand slug on the way. Wait for the 3 newcomers. This time we land elsewhere in the system and kill off two ships before doing the base.

While the battle reigns.

Image

The grand admiral feels this is a bad idea, but colonization is not his department.

The pirate base yields a lost ship location. In my home system [&:]. Wekkarus Hegemony is discovered as two exploration vessels meet. State offers a free trade department which is rejected by the Wekkarus.

Holy... We found a worky capital ship, and no small boy either. In the home system!

Image

About 4 times the power of my 6 destroyer home fleet. 3 destroyers are released for patrol duty, the other 3 are made into "Battle 1", while the capital ship is the new home fleet. "Battle 1" moves to the most distant mining station to the south, while home is... home. This capital ship will be kept around until I can make anything comparable in power. It could take quite a while.

I still have a location circle to the NE. I hope some exploration ship can be bothered to drive by.

300 ship size is researched, the research department move straight to the next size. After a while epsilon torpedoes are invented, and all destroyers are asked to retrofit to have one added. Improvements to the torpedo is next up by research department.

The Aqoenia Syndicate (Haakonish) is discovered by an exploration ship meeting to the south. The northernmost mining base is eaten by a pirate destroyer. No military ship was even close to being there in time. More shield on the mining bases would be good, but I guess base design department don't think about that. Home fleet moves to this system in the hope of the pirate returning or still hanging around.

An exlorer from the Ketarov Empire is found to the north west (same area as the Wekkarus). Battle 2 is made by the 3 extra destroyers, and moves out to the western parts where a resort base and research centers have been built by the expansion department.

State department tries a free trade agreement with the Ketarov, maybe this will work better, as they are natural friends of us. Ketarov are at war with Wekkarus, btw.

It did not work better, no treaty.

Best colony prospect found at 25%, it is not that strange that the expansion department has not made a new colony, even if they got those creepy volcanic guys. The Buvu Yagin Nation (Mortalen) are met at the south east. We found one mining station of their's.

The admiral don't like that all nations reject free trade agreements, and order 6 troop transports to give a hint to the grand general that troops may be needed.

A constructor moves north to rebuild the destroyed mining station. Home fleet follow... The home fleet is up north, battle 1 to the south, and battle 2 to the west, who is at home? Not the enemy, I'd hope.

We buy info about some ruins from some pirates. As this was sent to the military, home fleet goes on a discovery trip even further north (empire diplomacy bonus when colonized – ice planet...). Home fleet drops by the other location a bit further south (closer to home) as well. And finds a pirate base. This could be fun :)

State Department keeps spamming free trade suggestions...

Image

A total massacre, and we find another ship location. Promptly located in my home (!!!) system is:

Image

Not quite the same beast, but this one is also quite good. Say welcome to fleet "Battle 3". Fleets move around a bit as they need to refuel. One at home, 3 outside on different sides.

Further exploration of my home system is ordered...

(Detail level will go down as empire grows larger, don't worry...)

Small empire gives good economy. Status:

Image

The Ketarov Empire accepts a free trade agreement! Cake is distribution around the state department.

Enhanced torpedoes is completed, enhanced beams are next. And a construction ship is attacked by a host of kaltor in an oxygen cloud. I hope it will not go back, because clearing that one a bit far away would be a killer...

Image

A first colony location is found. Home fleet is to the south and moves in to see that things are ok. It is only this planet in the Varlenaar system.

A stedy stream of offers to buy tech are rejected... And and exploration ship from the Dhajut is encountered not far south of my starting planet. The state department instantly offer a free trade agreement to those as well. And we still only got one, with the Ketarov.

Image

Merely seconds before taking this image, that one discovered planet was owned by the Buvu Yagin Nation. The Aquoenia Syndicate obviously has progress. A nice 4x4 planet too (mortalen desert).

Construction department wants another construction ship. I hope it will be used to build a caslon mine in the south. And it wants another exploration ship that it gets, while its suggestion for war ships is rejected. Who need war ships when we got a 592 strength capital?

A construction ship is sent to build a mine on the planet I just colonized. The bureaucracy at different levels need to communicate more.

Ketarov Empire asks for help against the Wekkarus Hegemony. Sorry mac, but state department is the right place for those pleas.

The 6 troop transports are full with 4 troops each, and are put into the invasion fleet to keep track of them. A glance at the troop's pitiful 5750 strenght make me order 4 more troop transports. Always prepared!

Weird amounts of ships are being built, I must learn to not use the nasty build order screen. Oh well, I will need them sooner or later, but 8 new troop transports? I am pretty sure I removed all suggested ships and just built 4, so where the two escorts, frigates, destroyer, and 4 other troop transports come from, I don't really know.

Dang, the Ketarov asks me to impose trade sanctions against Wekkarus Hegemony in exchange for continental colonization. I want the AI to decide that. I hope putting diplomacy on full auto will make this and AI matter in the future. I am only cautious towards the Wekkarus so I say no, even if they are annoyed with me.

The Aqoenia Syndicate put a gas mine on the system just next to my new colony. Bah, I wanted that one. Slacking expansion department! And a constructor is again attacked in the same gas cloud. Home fleet is powerful, so I hope it can do the job... Careful approach incoming. And I chicken out after killing one. Slow speed there, and I cant decide where I shall jump to as in normal systems, which would allow me to ensure that only one is fought at a time.

Enhanced beams are completed, ion weapons next. Also, component prefabrication is done (bigger yards), and enhanced shields are next. The cruisers now have 332 size and 122 firepower. Tempting, but I need a bit more scary times. The AI wants to build 3 of them, but I decide to wait. I know of only 1 planet that is not mine, so any huge offensive missions won't happen soon. I hope :-/

Marshy Swamps Colonization discovered, proximity sensors next. A 73% and 76% appear in expansion planner. One in my starting system. One can hope...

The AI sends the boskara ship to colonize the planet in my starting system. Good job, you know that AI stand for “authentic idiocy”, right? I am sure a volcanic colonizer would be better saved for a more suitable time. It builds another one to send to the other in the east. Home Fleet (who is at home) goes ahead.

Image

Map with my new colony (to the east).

That is the Wekkarus capital up north. And they just colonized the system where one of my research stations are. I smell trouble [:)] My fleet was in that system before they arrived, so they have nothing to complain about!

So, that light one to the east are 800k population and full of mortalens, but owned by Aqoenia Syndicate (Haakonish). The Red one to the south is owned by the Buvu Yagin Nation (mortalen), and contains 447M Haakonish... Yes, they are at war.

Ketarov wants help again, but why am I asked? This is a fully automated AI game. Exceptions are suggested colonies and ship building (I do as they say for anything but military ships), and fleet movements and fleet organization is manual stuff. I would call this a bug, the AI should give that diplomacy response.

Small space port for Valenaar in the south. Sure, not my department and it is a good idea anyways. Enhanced Shields are completed, next up is better reactors with Nuclear Supercharging. And proximity sensors are also finishedand continental colonization up next. I have already colonized a continental planet, so I wonder why... I retrofit my destroyers to new design with proximity sensors, it costs a whopping 467 to do all six.

Next up is trouble...

RE: At the mercy of the AI

Post by Bingeling »

Thanks for the feedback Data. The rest I have made notes of, then continue tomorrow...

Oh, the smell of war.

I smell something bad happening soon... They landed next to my capital, and I have a whole armada of mining stations in that system. They will love that. And they are already annoyed.

Image

After the accidental mass purchase, my invasion fleet consist of 13 ships with 52 troops on board (299000 strength). One transport with only 3 troops is still outside and on auto. I won't aim for home worlds early in wars (but will get there eventually if war goes well and the AI don't make peace), but the two southern colonies of them looks kind of mine in case of war. A dhayut Sovereignty colony also appeared to my south west (the other red one).

Ion weapons reserached, area weapons next.

There is a mortalen independent state just to the NE of my southern city. It is hostile, and I won't attack it unless the AI indicates it wants to. I move the war category to “suggest” in hope of it happening :-) It is not many seconds until it wants to attack with invasion fleet. I send 3 transports, I don't need a 50 to 2 advantage.

No wonder it was quiet, the raiding requests are of course in the fleet control options. It wants to attack Aqoenia on opportunity. I say ok, but don't go after them with my fleets. I would never accept this if I was in charge...

The United Kiadian Alliance is encountered in the Wekkarus capital system to the north, and the Aqoenia ask me to stop attacks. I feel the country is torn between the military and political leadership. I do nothing. I am very uncomfortable raiding Aqoenia when Wekkarus are annoyed with me and has been so for ages. They also happen to be the two strongest nations when it comes to military power (but I have not met all nations yet).

Oh great, now they want to raid Wekkarus too. Sure... I do still nothing. “Targets of opportunity” would include two of their systems if I were to decide... The ai controlled ships (singles) should manage to mess this up on their own.

Image

You would have to ask state department about that, obviously...

Area weapons done, missile weapons next. Retrofit is done as asked for. I assume it is my space ports and lone defensive base (AI built). I build the exploration ship as asked for, and add 3 cruisers on my own initiative. Things look a bit more scary now. The mortalen world next to Varienaar to the south is of course conquered by 3 troop transports, and is down to 2M population.

Image

I like the timing of those first 3 messages... Fleets reorganized. Battle 3 is history, the two capitals and the cruisers are now in home fleet. Battle 1 and Battle 2 are renamed Raider 1 and Raider 2 and moved one to southern colonies, and one to the eastern. 3 destroyers are no longer a battle fleet when the home fleet has more than 10 times the fire power. Home is at home...

Image

Image is from before the movement is done, you can see the new colony (mortalen) to the south NE of the other one. 4 ships are out of the Invasion fleet, filling up.

Nuclear Supercharging is complete, damage control is next. Cash reserve is at 806k, cashflow is 20k...

A freighter is attacked at the Wekkar's homeworld. Raider 1 is moved to the Wekkarus world to the west instead to protect my research center there. My escort shoots up a freighter at the Wekkarus colony next to my home world (that system is full of my mining stations). My escort is attacked in the system next to home by a frigate. Home Fleet pays a visit.

Missile research done, High Energy Cohesion is next.

The AI wants to attack a research center southwest of their home world. Who am I to stop such an action? The frigate beat my escort and lost big to the home fleet. Raider 1 is sent to bust that research station instead of protecting my own station. Oh. We are at war, this seemed a bit aggressive and explains a bit. They forgot to inform me. I assume that it was I that declared? Since I did not see a message? Or did the AI for once answer without input from me?

The mining stations inform me there is one troop on the planet in the closest system. One troop carrier is sent, while the rest of invasion fleet refuels and moves out west. Home fleet refuels at home base, and will stay there for a while. I am quite blind, and enjoy their protection. I have a feeling the whole invasion fleet won't be needed to take the Urd Beneer system. The system next door falls quickly to my force. No losses, and my four troops increase to unheard of heights of power (3 are at 8250).

Image

The Kaidan Alliance want to swap territory maps. Who am I to reject? They are out west. You can just about see my invasion fleet going west, and my raiding fleet heading to that station up north. It is hard to see my blue colors, too bad random race don't give you the race colors of those you happen to receive. Not that dark green (if I remember right) would be much better.

The AI completes another research center, and is now just a little behind the Potential. And I really want that long range scanner I was offered to buy...

Duh, I have a research center in the area. I know there is only 1 troop there. Invasion fleet is almost there and stops. A single transport is sent to grab the colony. The rest go back home. Raider 1 did not meet resistance at the research center, and goes home for fuel.

The AI wants to build 6 frigates, 14 destroyers and 10 cruisers. I want another battle fleet so that one can go and peek at their home system, and maybe bash up some bases. I want one fleet at home too. Let me see. 6 cruisers maybe? To help the space port and defensive base at home. My exploration ship up there sees...

2 fleets of 3 frigates. 6-7 assorted ships from escort to destroyers. A defensive base with 272 firepower and 2080 shield. A Large Space Port with 632 firepower and 4160 shield. 10 troops at home world, with 5 being built. I am not going to run there fast, I am going to shoot it up first. I will wait till my cruisers are built, and it takes two turns as my spaceport is only medium. And no, the exploration ship was not put there by me.

My defensive base is 350 firepower and 1440 shield, and my medium space port has 298 firepower and 1800 shields. Having a more powerful defensive base feels good.

Image

I finally managed to grab a screen of one of those messages (using region screen grab) and not the in game key. I think that will be the last picture of that message, unless some really epic conquest comes up.

Image

This is all that I know of except for the Kaidans out west, and one of my mining bases outside the east edge. But I know that Wekkarus still got 11 colonies still (wikileaks must have grabbed their diplomatic messages).

Still only one agent, and that one is on counter intelligence. In a game in control, I would at this time check peace conditions. If not good, I would shoot up the mining bases in their home system and ask again. Taking further systems from them without taking their home world will be hard, as I have no clue where they are.

A passenger ship (poor sod) refreshes my view of their home system. One of their strike fleets are not at home, maybe I got visitors coming? They appear in a system with mining bases of both nations, south of their home world. The research base in urd beneer (that I conquered to the west) is attacked, and will probably die. 4 cruisers are done, and the new “Battle 1” is soon ready. Enemy explorers are hunted by my ships at home...

An enemy fleet that includes a troop transport makes quick visit to Yiturus, the system near my home world that I conquered. But they leave without landing anyone at the colony with a whole troop defending.

The final cruisers are complete, Home Fleet gets order to move to one of the planets in their home system. We are going base hunting. A stream of explorers going north makes it clear what the AI uses those for in a war... Btw, the military strenght is slightly to their advantage, 17.5 vs 16.5.

I spot their constructor ship and send raider 2, while Home Fleet is closing in. Image from arrival.

Image

We can just about see their ships hunting my explorer up left, while my fleet landed on two mining stations to the right. The selection circle is barely visible at this zoom.

Image

The first mining station explodes, while the first defender just arrived.

After shooting up all mining station and the defenders, fuel is short, and they have to go almost all the way home to refuel. To end the war now would cost 13 330, and it seems like a good deal to me. I guess state department does not agree.

If nothing happens, the next trip should try to challenge the planet defenses, and maybe blockade it... And I have discovered another colony of them west of the capital. A very small one with Kaidan population.

The AI wants to build frigates and cruisers, as well as explorers. It gets its explorers. Home fleet heads back. Raider 1 had an encounter with one of their strike forces. 1 damaged stranded for me, 3 dead for them. The one stranded will eventually die. Ship policies about running away are adjusted. Fighting ships was “never” and are now at 20%. Transports was at 20%, and are now “never”. I have a feeling I will need a resupply ship to hit up this system, time will show. I don't want to steal their home world with 11 colonies left (9 of which I don't know where are).

Damage control is discovered, quantum exploitation is next. Home fleet arrives at enemy home system, two fresh fleets for them to kill. The opening:

Image

Ships try to suicide by jumping to their planet. Not unknown to me. I say “attack nearby”. Ships may die that way... Ships die, but none of mine, and a lot of theirs. Fuel is not good, a resupply ship is ordered. There is a caslon source in this system...

I told them to refuel (way back towards home), they were disobedient, and loved to attack ships near their planet. Two cruisers were lost this way. Not a huge problem considering I have 880k coin, and a cruiser cost 3280. I order 4 new cruisers, but am not sure which fleet they will all go in.

I am annoyed at the loss, especially the last one. Nothing is on auto in the home fleet, and I repeatedly told the fleet to refuel. And still the stupid git of a captain jumped in at their planet after the first one was dead.

If any heads were recovered to roll, they would indeed roll.

I also realize that even with refueling in their system, beating up this planet could be too hard on my equipment. I would need to tippy toe from one direction and kill off single defensive bases first. It is also fun to wage war on low fuel again, in my last game I designed my own ships and never really needed resupply ships.

Currently it is predictable mayhem. I think I am too passive when running things on my own, so I may adapt to follow suggestions a bit more.

I sat up far too long to play further, I will post tomorrow.

Spoiler: Lots of cute little frigates, destroyers, and troop transports will die at the feet of my home fleet.

I have military ships and ground forces under mye command, but I do have automatic troop recruitment.

Space ports and defense stations are under the department for planetary security. However, they are a throughout bunch who make sure their stuff is up to standards. As long as the department of research gives them designs to build, as the department of research is a weird bunch that takes no instructions from the military.

Considering the last map shot above, I could have moved the 6 cruisers into the home fleet in the hope of the home fleet being good enough to blast that space port. But apart from that, there is not much to do other than defense. And I would not have a fleet jump around in a system with a well protected space port without a very close, manual watch. I have had more powerful ships than these die to space ports in other games, as their captains are a bit eager to jump with defenders back to base [8|].

An explorer drops by their other system. 6 troops are spotted in a crap colony, obviously a conquest (fits with the race).

Image

They seem to have issues getting along with their neighbours, I guess they forgot to read the galactopedia. “Wekkarus are a generally peaceful species that like to keep to themselves.” Right.

An exploration ship from the Narant Confederacy (Human) is discovered some way east of the Wekkarus capital. They fall in line with the others when it comes to strength.

“The Resupply ship 'Worthy Judgment' has been completed at Note. Strange name for a resupply ship. 232 fire power, 460 shields, 872 size. It gets its very own fleet, “Resupply 1”. And my four new cruisers are also complete. They go into home fleet. Losing two of the old ones, Home fleet now has the two free capital ships and 5 cruisers, giving 1450 Power.

And everyone still reject free trade agreements, the state department is obviously busy.

Hm, the gas giant is the planet around which the capital moon circle. I will try aim my refuel ship into the middle. Raider 2 with its two remaining destroyers goes to western colony as I suspect the AI is grumpy about its losses. Raider 1 is in the system next to my capital that I also conquered.

High Energy Cohesion with the Shockwave torpedo is discovered. Better area weapons are next in line. The bases are refitted, the attack goes on.

I don't dare aim for that planet on the jump into the system, so I aim at an outer planet. A private gas mining ship is on its way into that system to mine. How bright is that? It found military ships and died.

A very long fight against smaller enemies in the system. Much coaching to keep them in the outer regions are done, but the 5 stupid cruisers jump on the planet, and one is destroyed. I send the bunch to a close system to bust some mining bases and refuel on the resupply ship. A Ketarov explorer moved in and lived dangerously with my resupply ship in the fight. It has area weapons...

An independent mortalen is found halfway on the route to my enemy. Very small one this too. I have a feeling the two mortalens I have found are new colonies that have rebelled. I don't send the invasion fleet as requested, I send 1 transport. It does the job well. The AI asks for a space port on the eastern colony, I am happy to do as told.

We have met the Boskara Colective at the Kaidan capital out west. They are the same size as the crowd going by the size of the bar on diplomacy screen.

So I ran out of fuel fighting in the system, and jumped a bit south. On the map you can see the new conquered mortalen colony Durog up north, the selected Home fleet and resupply fleet south of the Wekkarus Capital (the resupply fleet is deploying, and the home fleet is very low on fuel). My explorers circle the other Wekkarus system. Still 6 troops defending.

Image

Of course the refuel ship is attacked, and my home fleet so much wants to jump with them into the arms of that large space port which now has two defensive bases. “Stop” is a nice order.

Continental colonization is completed, like I could not do that from the start. Enhanced resource exploration is next up. Just for variety, a bunch of the state's requests for free trade are refused. Quantum exploitation is also complete, next up is jump inhibiting.

The Home fleet is filled up, and I undeploy the resupply ship. I am sure it would get visitors. Back into the fray, then. Retrofit is suggested, but I don't retrofit anything but my bases. Enhanced Area Weapons is complete (the resupply ship will hurt more), and star fighters are up. It is nice, as I think at least one capital has fighter bays, but no fighters...

6 military ships meet me at the outer reaches this time. They last few runs to hide at their space ports (good idea), and I kill a newly erected gas mine instead. Kill some more... Then off to try to sneak in that resupply ship.

Image

I am not sure trying to deploy on this planet is my brightest idea ever. Little ones are out to play. That lone capital (the weakest one) that is behind the rest had fun with those four and some incoming friends of the soon to be dead. Too dangerous. Now there are 3 cruisers in the home fleet...

The humans want to swap territory maps. I am happy to oblige. They are in the northeast, which may be a very nice position with some free space behind them. Back to the same system to fuel. A lone troop transport followed. Bright idea, it is not just my captains that are stupid. I see fighters now!

“Aqoenia Syndicate says: Thank you for the gift”. They are still furious with us. Maybe that random raiding was not such a bright idea after all, state? And another one. Still furious. War tiredness is serious, reputation is satisfactory and red.

Image

If I was not so cheap, I would buy 100 cruisers and blast that space port into nothingness... And still have 700k left. At least until the maintenance was paid...

Stupid stab at that space port incoming. I don't think I will succeed, but I hope my capitals survive. A careful move to one defensive base is planned, solid coaching not to let the space port fire on me. Then the other. Then a test at the space port. Resupply ship is left behind.

Hyperjump inhibiting done, high power blasters next. The invasion fleet refuels back home and puts an evil eye on that other system, 6 troops or not.

Moving to the space port's northern defensive base. “Engage when attacked” and a close watch is kept. This won't work, I need major force here. Back to refuel at ship and plans for killing that space port are put on hold. The nasties steal research info from us. Silly AI, I have 1 099 292, you could maybe, just maybe, afford 3 more spies in the addition to the one present? The invasion fleet also moves to the refueling fleet. 52 troops on the move, and those 6 on that neighbor planet are going to die. Maybe not by all 52, as retrieving them will be annoying.

30K resort income is observed, there are more than a million tourists at that western resort base. Not bad, not bad at all. In a weak moment I accept the 6 frigates the AI wants.

Home Fleet to the Esdi Naha system while the invasion fleet refuels (this is the other enemy system I can see). It will be nice times in a system with no killer space port, safe killing!

There is another empire that I have missed the discovery of. I noticed when they rejected the usual free trade suggestion. They was seen in the system I now invade. It is Issuwyn Nation, Naxxilians. There are now 10 somewhat even nations on my diplomacy screen, that should be all that I set up. One home fleet cruiser got a troop on board, and the planet is now empty. So much for invasion fleet. The price of peace has risen to 25k.

Oh, the one who knew about one more system of his enemy... Attack against a mining base in the east by pirates. 3 military ships are present. Maybe those 6 new frigates was not such a bad idea after all? :)

I buy info about Nexus of the Red Claw from pirates. Not that anyone will go there... I am too rich and waste money on stupid things like this. A planet with 16M boskara is up for grabs out west. I make a troop transport not currently in a fleet take a trip. My assistants obviously slacked in putting full transports back in the fleet.

Done with enhanced engines, I did not even notice we started. High volume thrust on the menu. Invasion fleet (with only transports) goes to stomp a high tech research lab in the neighboring system. They are insulted by the home fleet invading the planet robbing them o their day of glory.

Target tracking is a research subject after enhanced resource exploration is complete. Good idea!

Please little explorers, stop die in his capital system, and find me more. Alzuk with 1M remaining boskar taken. 1 out of 4 troops died. My empire now looks like this:

Image

The ignored pirate hint is up on the top right corner. I miss some explorers doing... exploring... And I only have one target, which I don't want to attack. A mining ship found a Wekkaru mining base of theirs west of Urd Beneer. That would be the star closest to that nebula on the west edge. A raiding fleet gets something to do. There is a destroyer escort, and they can't destroy each other. So I kill the base and leave.

Impact Assault blasters are discovered, and we move straight on to the improved version. I retrofit the cruisers back at home. 204 firepower now, a good upgrade from 122. And no more cruisers for me, I don't have a large enough shipyard. Not so bright of the AI designer, making the cruiser design unbuildable. That retrofit will not work, btw, they remain at the old size.

I discover a Wekkaru colony right next to the Dhayut one being bright and red on the image above. I split the invasion fleet leaving 8 ships, and moving the other 6 to "Invasion 2" and send those back home to do that invasion. Which probably require very little force. I have a base there on the image above, I guess that was the planet they decided to colonize.

My new destroyers now have 84 fire power, and I can't build cruisers. I buy 10 of those and put in a fleet to keep control of them. The AI still bribes Aqoenia Syndicate. They are at –74... I am doing steady territory map swap with the humans up north east. Not with anyone else. There are big holes in my knowledge of the universe. This is the full galaxy map.

Image

Target tracking done, on to enhanced transport. The first mission of my new destroyers will be refit :) Refitting 3 space ports with target tracker cost 67, I am a ruined man!

Yay, Usalea discovered east of their capital. 3 troops in town, small space port.
Home Fleet: Attack Usalea 1 space port. Invasion fleet (the 8 remaining) will follow to system. Another Wekkarus town found South east of me, east of that beige colony. I know from the discovering ship that it is empty, so one troop transport leave invasion 2 and attacks alone. It is connected to Usalea which I will attack once the home fleet is fueled up. Btw, I don't see where the lower left Wekkaru colony is linked. So there is a spaceport somewhere in the west, I guess.

High volume thrust is researched, enhanced hyper drives are next. Capredur 2 (the lower left) is empty on arrival. One troop transport attacks, and the rest of Invasion 2 goes home. Attacking transports are set on auto and out of fleet, to be gathered at regular intervals when full.

Image

Refuling bonanza top left. Invasion fleet in system in lower left area. You can see transport on the way to lower right. Before this stunt, the Wekkaru got 12 colonies.

Home fleet gets a small head start for Usaela. Attack planet. Invasion fleet a little while later. Strange, lower right rebelled after capture, but my four troops are on the transport. They are told to unload on planet. Which is soon replaced by “attack independent”. Home fleet finds 10 war ships at the space port, and jumps to an outer planet to clean up a bit. Better not to have the small space port attacking as well. My big battle ship is hurt quite a bit, but the host of attackers die...

They ask if I should attack the Dhayut in Capredur, because they have a fleet there (and a base). Eh... no. That was disobedient of me...

The new destroyer fleet kills a pirate base NW of Durog instead, order is given while my capital ship regain shield. Invasion fleet stops just outside the system, as killing that space port took longer than expected. Going in for the space port kill, 150 firepower from this one, a bit nicer than the large... 3 troops in town, 4 transports attack. A huge fleet is incoming. Home fleet to the planet to defend the troop transports. 16 troops vs 3 on planet, even my troops should win that, and invasion fleet refuels at resupply ship which is still where it has been since it for some reason followed invasion fleet to bust that research station (I guess I drag-selected).

Image

It looks better now. Home fleet is mopping up. Invasion fleet going west to refuel. 10th fleet (10 destroyers) are close to the pirate base. Btw, that huge fleet was just 3-4 ships, the rest may appear later. Next time I look, no more pirate base.

They offer 7690 for peace, they are willing to pay! I would love peace after killing the two remaining bases in my new conquest in NE. Of course, noone asks anyone for peace.
The economy is 1 256 174. My empire is getting large (as seen from image above).

Wekkarus got war with us, Issuwyn, Dhayut, and Ketarov. United Kiadian Alliance have trade sanctions with them. Measured by the size of their diplomacy bar, they are the largest, together with the Ketarov.

Done with hyper drives, fast mining next. Stupid lone destroyer attack my resupply ship. I have 0 exploration ships. Maybe the exploration department should ask for more, and stop sending them to their death? Things are quiet just now.

This is status. Note has been full for ages... And 1900k tourists are on my resort base at an 89% black hole. It says 0 for all bonus income but I think that is due to timing issues with the financial year, or something.

I have trade sanctions with Dhayut. I guess that is my doing, as the AI was so annoyed by their fleet in my new system in SW.

RE: At the mercy of the AI

So...

I need to consider my fleet needs. The new system top right is worth defending. Maybe the cruisers? Maybe make some raider fleets with 4 new fancy 84 strength destroyers. It should be enough to take the 3 ship strike forces, and can mop a pirate base at need.

My home planet my be well enough defended, a raider fleet and the space port + defensive base should hold. And I have not been attacked, just had explorers visiting. There are signs of the Wekkaru being busy with all their wars.

So, one raider in the south, in the Capredur system that I conquered from the Wekkaru. My impression is that the AI loves to revisit lost property. Urd Beneer west of the capital has had a mining base of Wekkaru a little left, and has the resort base close. Maybe another raider there? One raider top left, as visitors are likely. As I said, Battle 1 with the cruisers top right. And another raider at the spaceport in the east.

Raiders at home, south, west, east, northwest. 4 destroyers each. 20 destroyers in fleets. Battle 1 in northwest, and Home Fleet to beat up any system I may find, and make some return trip to the Wekkaru home system to bash any new mining bases.

Stupid AI don't hire spies or steal territory maps. I guess with a full AI control this may be a good idea, as discovering an enemy gas mine and colony waaaay up north would probably make it send the home fleet there. Stupid AI don't explore during war, and I have 0 exploration ships until the next time it checks for ship needs. Stupid AI don't notice that this is a good time for peace to take down that war weariness.

And honestly... The AI designer. Start with a cruiser design at just sub 300, as that is soon enough researched, and destroyers are OK until then. Then keep cruisers just shy of the max limit until 800 is researched. Then put the capital ship just below max, and trail the cruisers at least one shipyard size behind (I think 500 or 550 is the one before 800?)

And when diplomacy is on auto, have the AI answer requests, but keep the user informed. An option for this would be nice, full auto, or auto with user informed. It would be nice to get told when that trade sanction was put in, and as I saw when the Wekkaru sanctioned me, it is probably my state department starting that one.

How many 84 strength destroyer would it take to off that large space port and defensive bases? That may have been upgraded? A blockade on their capital would have them ask for peace, but I don't think the large space port and two defensive bases would sit idle and allow that blockade to go on. Decisions, decisions.

I guess one may see that I enjoy to have a fleet in every corner, and the empire is large enough to have corners now.

Beware of my evil ways.

This is a fun, but a little frustrating way to play. Maybe one should allow oneself to do a little interference in either espionage or exploration. During war, allow explorers to manually hop between systems to look for colonies. Or manually hire one more agent and send him territory map stealing. Allow for explorers to jump into systems that you want explored (I don't need them to die at their home system when I have no plans on going there, and nothing the home system will put up makes me afraid to jump on an outer planet with my home fleet. At worst I jump out...).

Or, allow raider fleets to go around looking for prey, that is. Jumping to unknown systems testing their proximity sensors. A system with multiple mining bases would be a snack for these.

I smell another resupply ship coming, I don't think a fleet can live in the two northern systems until gas mines are built. And I can't order that to happen. So resupply 1 in one system, and resupply 2 (not yet built) in the other.

And I smell a big post for improvements coming in the wish list thread. Main thing right now is a better message log. Special categories for battle, exploration events, colonization, diplomacy messages (both incoming and outgoing) with a field for not answered, accepted or rejected, and choices for different types if they should be in the top log, in popup, or popup and auto pause.

Elliot must be a good programmer to make this game as nice and stable as it is, and an improved message log should not be hard if he is able to give it priority. There may be issues with the amount of data stored, but one does not need to load all old events, and one could prune events if the log is too large, or the event too old. The lack of the above info about automatic activities restrict the possible ways of play (it is annoying to have to visit the diplomacy screen to see if we are at war, although suggestions for attacks gives a nice hint).

A decision was made under a long fleet command meeting. Their home world must be blockaded. Estimated long need is for 20 new destroyers, 40 are ordered with another resupply ship.

A destroyer fleet will eventually visit that planet, backed up by the home fleet.

Battle 1 to Usalea 1.
Usalea is attacked by the 1st fleet of around 15 ships. The damage taken is pretty one sided, and no huge shield damage suffered by Home fleet, and lots of explosions are heard. Battle 1 arrives, and the new Resupply 2 is under way. There is no Caslon source in Usalea, so Resupply 2 aims for a system some way out with a known caslon source.

Destroyers are eventually completed, and making 40 takes a little while with 8 construction yards available. Invasion Fleet heads home, this is not their war.

Resupply 2 meets a Buvu Yagin Nation supply ship on the same planet, but the other part leaves. And more research is stolen by the nasties. Still no sign of a second agent.

Enhanced transport is complete, enhanced target tracking next.

The 10th fleet that previously busted a pirate base, now has 40 destroyers with a total firepower of 3360. Steady small streams to the Usalea system where Battle 1 is the welcome committee while Home Fleet triest to refuel. 10th fleet gather at Resupply 1 south of the target.

There is a major traffic jam as 40 destroyers bully the poor Worthy Judgment into providing fuel for all of them. Home fleet moves towards a waiting position in deep space south of the target.

A 25 ship Dhayut fleet refuel at their gas mine in my Capredur system. I am happy to see them leave.

10th fleet ran the poor resupply ship dry. The stragglers get their fuel after a little waiting for the slow mining crew to grab some more, and Home Fleet changes target for an outer planet as it wants to draw out fighting ships before the attack.

10th fleet takes off and gang up on a weapon platform at arrival.

Image

Home fleet targets the other.

Image

As the spaceport and bases die, 37 out of the 40 ships of the 10th fleet are alive, with one badly damaged. Home fleet is live and kicking. Home fleet proceeds to blockade Elauf. Two new Raider fleets of 4 destroyers are split out from 10th fleet as Battle 1 kills off a steady stream of single ships landing in Usalea.

10 ships of 10th fleet make the new Destroyer 1. Another 10 makes Destroyer 2. The rest are let loose on auto. Destroyer 1 stays in system, Destroyer 2 travels back home. Raider 3 and 5 (new fleets) to each northern city.

The Wekkarus Hegemony are now willing to pay a meager 4760 for peace, while Resupply 1 moves to deploy next to their capital to help the blockade. Or am I confused by peace offers, so maybe they asked for money, not offered.

The Military strenght of Wekkarus is at 2813, second lowest with the Dhayut just behind. I am third, just behind Boskara Collective and with Aqoenia Syndicate in a lead.

1: Aqoenia 10400
2: Boskara 9115
3: Me 8995

Faster mining done, which will hopefully help the resupply ships. Quantum Microutilization is next. The research department is smart enough to pick a technology and improve that before doing alternatives.

Wekkarus starts building a new large space port. This one does not become old, and dies easier than its predecessor. All transports retrofit, as do the frigates and old destroyers. Still no request for exploration ships.

Another thank you for the gift from Aqoenia, at -66 now. Destroyer 1 and Home Fleet takes turns at blockade duty, while the other moves a very short distance to refuel. Like... to the planet next door which I did not manage to deploy on with the spaceport alive.

Another gift, no effect. Did the state department should read the manual that explains that frequent gifts don't work so well, but they are probably too busy offering free trade agreements and reading the refusals.

“Boskara Collective says: No, we are not interested in a Free Trade Agreement. We have other plans for you”. It is good to see a future mutual defense pact incoming [;)]

Synchronized Energy Output is completed. Destroyers go from 84 to 114 fire power. Light Interceptors are next. My cruisers are at 116 firepower still, and are starting to look obsolete. They have almost twice the shield strength, though.

The Wekkarus build another space port, and no longer has any money to offer in a peace. Firing practice is nice. A mining base of mine in the south is destroyed by pirates. The local raider fleet must have been confuses about its intended location.

One of the poor guys that land in Usaela is followed into the nearby Narg Zone, where a few military ships, a gas mining base, and some civilian ships are found. The pursuit is happy to find stuff to destroy.

The lack of any build orders makes a troop of the secret police storm the exploration department and force them to sign orders for 4 exploration ships. Another mining base is located, Raider 5 are all over the moon in joy. Raider 6 play heroes rescuing a mining base in a neighbor system compared to their eastern base.

In the diplomacy screen I find a peace offer. I make sure to sign before state department notices the message.

After war ends, Narrant Confederacy, after one thousand territory map swaps offer a free trade agreement. We accept. Or. It is automated, they say. So treaty offers are pop up, peace offers are not. That makes sense. It is still accepted, too late to stop my action.

Image

This is my diplomacy status as war is over. Cashflow is at - 5 762. Money is at 1 276 352. Cashflow is soon positive, and I hope for some civilian build orders. Spaceports are expected, as are a constructor or two. Hopefully explorers will work hard, as I have 3 furious or worse neighbors, and I know of one colony for each of them.

Medium space port is ordered for Usalea1, the newly conquered north eastern corner. Joy. A request is made for 1 frigate, 1 exploration ship and 3 construction ships. The frigate is removed, the rest are fulfilled.

I hope for some better spread out caslon mines. I have multiple around the Home world, one in the east, and one in the south.

Explorers at the system of Ziltrus, the known Dhayut system in south west are attacked by an escort. A pirate base is discovered in the internal northeastern parts of my area. Raider 6 are the lucky ones.

Light Interceptors are done, Advanced Torpedoes are next. Stupid move, we already have replaced those with new technology, no need for further improvement. Stubborn research managers. We may happen to have some left on the not retrofittable cruisers, which may explain the folly.

A southern mining station is attacked by a Dhayut escort. One more explorer is asked for and ordered. The mining station is not taking much damage from the escort. Things may turn nasty once Raider 2 arrives to patrol. We still love to explore Ziltrus, and get attacked. Out of interest. 260M inhabitants and 1 troop. And a small space port with 174 fire power.

Image

Raider 2 arrives at the attacked mining station just as it takes damage. On their own initiative they blow up all red on that picture. And I am at war, noone told me, and I wonder when that was declared. Maybe the moment they shot at the mining base?

Home fleet goes to attack Ziltrius space port. Invasion 2 with 6 troop carriers move along a bit behind. Raider 2 moves to an outer planet.

Image

Picture of my southern areas. Resupply ships are still up north, but I have nowhere else to go, so no hurry. Good old Elauf got a new defensive base, but no space port as of yet. A small freighter rats on them. Battle 1 moves to Varlenaar, the space port in the very south.

Image

Arrival is nicely timed by pure luck. Raider 2 starts on the mining stations, while home fleet does the space port. Formidable Inquisitor makes sure to kill a construction ship on the way to the space port. Invasion 2 rebelled and did not move, so one transport is sent to take over the planet. After a quick reconsideration two go, as I want a garrison.

An independent boskara planet is discovered near my souteast colony. A troop transport is dispatched.

Ziltrius is mine with its 548M inhabitants, of which half are Dhayut. I have found two Issuwyn Nation colonies to my south west, and one to the south. And another Aqoenia planet.

Explorers are doing their job! It would be nice to know where my enemy lives, though.

Image

My freighters are caught in the cross fire as the nice Medium Space Port on the red planet south of my area destroy Aqoenia Syndicate's 7th fleet. Notice my new colony in the southeast with a constructor arriving.

A mining station in my system of Durog in the middle North is lost to a pirate. The high command was a bit occupied watching that battle on that red planet... Another pirate base found which is the source of the attack. Raider 6 are the lucky ones again. If you can't stop their attack, kill their base instead. An escort and a frigate are late arrivals, while the pirate frigate has a field day scaring civilian traffic. The puny gunships are killed by the nasty pirate frigate [:(] Raider 6 takes the trip there. Frigates and escorts are declared useless. As Raider 6 assist in the middle, pirates attack the eastern part in their absence. Local forces fight them off, and a pirate base is located further east. Maybe Raider 6 should be renamed 1st Pirate Busters?

The scientists are done with coordinated control, enhanced storage is next.

There is still no sign of any Dhayut.

I lack a caslon source in the north, and the new space port is also empty. The little it got is reserved by my former enemies. New leadership is installed at the space port. This means I let the two resupply ships stay up north, and hope I won't discover any distant enemy locations. But not having met them, is a sign that they are not very close.

The Dhayut has a very weak military, and are at war with 4 nations. The rest of the nations apart from Bavu Yagin Nation have trade embargos against them. They have 7 colonies to grab.

A gas mine is built in a northern gas cloud which is up for grabs after I killed the old inhabitants during the last war. This allows resupply 2 to move south.

Research for 10M is offered by the Kiadans to declare war on Ketarov. Wrong guy to ask, and they are one of two I have free trade agreements with. They had more than 1 opportunity to get one as well...

The Dhayut capital system is found a short way SW of that purple cluster on the map above. It has two planets, with 12 troops on the capital and 2 on the other planet. A large space port is present. 876 firepower, 4320 shields. Home fleet moves towards an outer planet, though the place seems empty of mining snack.

Image

My empire. My target is in the bottom left corner. Home Fleet is on the way. Raider 5 is about to land back in its system in the west after refuling back home. Raider 6 is closing in on the the pirate base at the right end. Destroyer 2 have started from the gas fields back home heading for Alzuk on my own very lower left. Resupply 2 is not far on its way, being in the free void in the middle where pirates loves to roam. I have found a Wekkarus system to the left. Nice to know if they get nasty again. The Naxillians are both southwest (in force) and northeast (with a puny colony) of me. Destroyer 1 sits on the resupply fleet in NW, and there are raiding fleets in both northern towns.

We have bribed the Issuwyn nation. They are angry with me and they want my colonies and resources. Stay away nasties, I know where you live...

Raider 6 kill the pirate base and an escort, while researchers complete quantum microUtilization and start researching advanced jump stalling.

The Dhayut are so much more civilized. Noone bother my explorers when they enter their home system. The Naxillian home world is not among the ones discovered.

Image

Home Fleet is suicidal and say hello to Eltes Space port. This is from the very start of the action.

The result? My star capital ship dies first... The Cruisers die next, the space port takes damage, while the last capital retreats and reappears for the kill.
Then it is over.

Image

It was obviously a wrong move to manually accept the last peace offer, the AI will do that.

One ship returns, Destroyer 2 is merged with the remaining capital as the new home fleet. Battle 1 is also included. The new home fleet has 2120 firepower.

Was this attack a good idea? Well. War is over, and I lost the backbone of my military. But it was too fun not to try... Destroyer 2 present would not have hurt a bit, though. I notice I have trade sanctions with Wekkarus and Issuwyn Nation as the war ends. I wonder when those were started :) I may miss messages in the log.

Another Aq fleet dies at that Medium Space Port in the lone red city in central south. Dhayhut still have Keratov and Kiadian at war.

Yet another pirate base just south of the last one. Guess who does the job... Advanced torpedoes are complete, and we move on to High Power Discharges to improve the other kind of torpedoes.

Our diplomats wants to raid the Wekkarus. We say foolishly “yes”, but fleets are passive. The home fleet is not half way back to my southern space port... Invasion Fleet, now with 10 ships, moves to refuel at the northern resupply ship where 1 Destroyer (number first for ship list purpose) still are. Explorers head north for war time duty.

Silly diplomats want to raid Aqoenia as well. The ones we have bribed again and again. Bright people. We accept, but fleets are passive. Why fish for one war when you can have two for just a marginally added cost?

Two new constructors are ordered on request, making the total 7. Pirates gave tip of a Boskar independent, which no one will explore if I know the exploration guys as good as I think.

We are heading for trouble, and below our empire status. The map is like the last one given. There are still some spare coin in case of trouble, and another 100 destroyers can be hired if needed. My problem is that I can't build large ships. I don't need better jump stalling when I can't build anything larger than destroyers and don't allow myself to design a special destroyer for that purpose. Resupply ships could carry one, but that would be less than ideal. A resupply ship should be happy when nasties disappear. I am praying for large scale construction next.

Image

As the final gasp, Aqoenia Syndicate says “Thank you for the gift”. Something tells me there are conflicting factions within state department. Free trade agreement with the Kiadian Alliance is signed.

RE: At the mercy of the AI

Post by Bingeling »

And life goes on...

Good news and bad news.

The good: 4 new exploration ships are ordered, which will make a total of 10.
The bad: Orders for harassing the merchant fleet of the Issuwyn Nation. That is three empires at once time. The Wekkarus has also asked to have military ships removed (AI controlled ships).

The Invasion fleet feels action coming to the north, and has gone to the northern resupply ship. The Home Fleet tries to get back home, but need the stragglers to refuel. It better stay in the middle until I know where war is coming.

My most important colonies are. Central (capital), south, west, east and northeast. The southern flanks are most expendable, and likely to struggle more if war comes from that side.

The Wekkarus are not dangerous alone, and they still have no space port on their capital, which should mean they can not afford the large space port it probably wants to build.

And Aqoenia raiding is asked for again, I heard nothing from them the first time, so probably none were encountered. Another warning to remove military from Wekkarus.

Enhanced storage is completed by research department, long range scanners are the next item on their list.

My automated ships park themselves on the Wekkarus capital. Repeated questions to remove them from system. Finally shooting starts. 5-6 destroyers and a few frigates are there, all automated singles. A proper little battle going on, no state of war. I ask them to leave before they all die to the defense base... And then we are at war.

Image

Explorers have found some Ketarov and a Dhajut in the northwest, a little more in the south, and a Naxx in the east.

The 10 destroyers of 1st Destroyer moves to try kill the defensive base. Home fleet is refueling in the south, resupply 2 moves to my western system where the civilians has avoided to build a gas mine on the nice planet ready and waiting in the system.

The hyper deny is researched, and they move on the Intensified Shield Strength. No bigger yards for me... A couple of bypassers help 1st Destroyer. At the end 3 destroyers are ok, 5 are damaged, and the rest are gone. One enemy destroyer was destroyed also.

Boskara Collective declares war. This is a sign that all wars this far has been declared by state. I do not know where they live, and I hope it goes both ways.

Orders come for some frigates and 1 exploration ship. 30 destroyers and one exploration ship is ordered.

Raider 6 loses a destroyer when killing a pirate base north of their location. A pirate crew far east surrenders. Their base is scrapped, and there are no ships included in the deal.

At the Wekkarus capital, one random arrival makes 4 destroyers that are capable of fighting, but one appears to have a damaged shield. They blockade the capital.

The Home Fleet moves to Urd Beneer in the west, where the resupply ship has deployed. And the Aqoenia finally ask for attacks to stop after multiple waves of orders from state.

Invasion 2 takes the last 5 transports which are now full, 25 troops (capacity has increased to 5).

A peek is given at the other Wekkarus system which is in the west. A medium space port, and 5 troops. I am glad to see the space port is weaker than the Mortalen one I have seen massacre the Aqoenians. The capital has 19 troops if my count is correct (someone should count troop strength for me, seeing more than 5-6 with a quick look is not possible).

The new destroyers built at Usalea(NE) (from the 30 empire wide order) is sent to help the blockade until further use is found.

I can see a refusal for peace from the Wekkaru. So state has offered that. Why? We killed a few ships and a defensive base, and has gained nothing. This war was their doing, and they don't want to gain anything. It is crazy to let those guys guide this nation.

A boskara destroyer arrive at Esdi Naha in the northwest. The raiding fleet present kills it. Two more troops are manually ordered here, I am the supreme commander of the army too, even if the daily work is left for my assistants.

Home fleet move towards an outer planet at Nintan, the southern Wekkarus system known.

Wekkarus destroyers have much more shields but less firepower than our own. They take a long time to kill, but are probably stronger on a ship by ship basis.

A pirate base is located in my central pirate land. 21st, at temporary fleet of 4 new destroyers from the east notice it while driving by, and stop by for the kill. Proximity sensors are nice.

Buvu Yagin Nation impose trade sanctions.

Boskara destroyers have been at Esdi naha while the raider fleet went to Ketarov space to refuel. Some newcomers head there. No troops have landed.

Home Fleet lands and finds ships to fight.

Image

The home fleet loses 1 destroyer. The medium spaceport is just below this image, and was killed. Invasion 2 moves from my home areas to attack the now defenseless colony with its 5 troops.

We discover that pirates have been funded by the Wekkarus to harass our friend the Narrant Confederacy. As state is not asked, we tell this to Narrant.

A freighter is hit by naxx forces attacking a Narrant Planet, I am not the only one at war.

Invasion 2 lands 25 troops to fight the 5 at Ildes in the Nintan system, the southern Wekkarus colony. They return to the resupply ship in our western town to refuel. The colony falls to our invasion, with 14 survivors. We took a good spanking, but all of them are over 10k strength now.

Long range scanners are done, enhanced sensors are next. They want to retrofit for 36k, but I fail to see the long range scanners anywhere. All space ports are refitted for free...

A freighter is attacked at the westernmost Kiadian city by the Wekkarus, their realm obviously goes far west. As Invasion 2 return to the resupply ship, I notice that one of them have 5 troops. It was not such a bad massacre after all, maybe I can do their capital in a 2-1 odds, as they don't seem to want peace. No other systems are known. One taken, one blockaded.

The Naxx have a colony with gardens of arcadia, improving happiness across empire. It is to the far east. If war erupts with them, that one is an obvious target, not too far from my planets either, and far from their home systems. And removing them from my NE would seem like a primary objective if war erupts, anyways.

Intensified Shield Strength is useful, and completed. Next up is Maximized thrust output. The military's cry for cruisers are again ignored.
I notice a system with Wekkarus installations, a research center and gas mine among others, north of Usalea. Raider 1 stationed in the system goes to have fun, as the medium space port should handle itself in a pinch. Raider 1 completes is mission with no drama and refuels at the gas mine sw of their normal location.

With the new shield discovery, the space ports and defensive base are retrofitted. The ships will have to wait for more opportune times. The destroyers at home retrofits (the medium home base built a good amount of the 30 new, and they have form a new fleet). Resupply 2 moves to our western conquest, to provide fuel for home fleet who are low.

Invasion fleet with 43 troops move to attack the 19 at the Wekkarus capital system.

A gas mine of the Wekkarus is discovered NW of Urd Beneer (my previous western border town). Raider 5 goes to do its job.

While raider 5 goes spanking, the United Kiadian Alliance warn me to stop attacks. I am truly clueless to what may have happened. Maybe a freighter tried to move into the blockaded planet and had an escort? That don't sound too likely though, I don't see a lot of escorting going on.

Another Wekkarus gas mine is discovered in the clouds east of our new colony. A couple of cruisers of the home fleet takes the trip. There are some military ships present, as my poor gas miner that found them noticed. Is it sad that the mining ships are my only explorers.

The Kiadian are furious, and cancels the free trade agreement. I wonder what happened that caused the warning and loss of friendship. My reputation has moved from slightly positive to nasty, and my other friends are now cautious.

The first Boskara colony is found quite far north, central. Two new Boskara nations with 1 planet each are met in the western parts.

The battle for Elfau is going on. At least the red bar is still longer. The invasion fleet is released and all set on auto to refill. The ones from invasion 2 are full and are the new invasion fleet. They are asked to help in the attack. One more Boskara colony is found, to my northeast, and not so far.

The Narrant attacks a Boskara medium space port in the north. You go, boys! Which they did, they fled.

High power discharge is completed by the scientists, emp defenses is next up for the weapon guys.

My assault on Elfau is doing OK, the proportions look decent.

The destroyer fleet that was built at home (of the latest 30) moves to my new conquest to relieve the Home Fleet. It has 10 Destroyers.

The Kiadian thanks for a gift. There is a long, long route back to good standings.

The Naxx warn against attacks, I have no clue where, but I have removed automated forces from their system earlier. And the Naxx are of course the Issuwyn Nation.

The Destroyers have arrived on our new western outpost. Time flies when things are quiet. Odds at Elauf looks better. Good thing, as three of the four from the new invasion fleet has dropped their load, and if odds looked bad now, I would be in big trouble :-)

Gift for Aqoenia, which we not too long ago repeatedly attacked. You have to love state department.

Image

And the invasion goes on.

We have captured our second agent, now Issuwyn, the earlier one was Wekkaru. My lone agent is now at 111 skill.

A Boskaran troop transport attacks a civilan ship in my Home system. The local military presence is quite thin (a slight rewording of the term "absent"), and Home Fleet is some way out. Note starts to build four new destroyers... Troop thransports on refilling mission scares it away.

Trade sanctions, more trade sanctions. Issuwyn, Dhayut, Buvu Yagin, Aqoenia (just now). War with Boskara and Wekkara.

That leave Narrant and Ketarov with free trade agreements, and the two new “Boskara Nation” and “Kennatar Hegemony” and United Kiadian Alliance with no deals.

It would not hurt to know where that Boskaran troop transport took off...

A little known fact about the Narrant Confederacy, is that their national instrument is a balalaika.

Image

Enhanced sensors are ready for testing, countermeasures is the next high tech project. A Wekkarus Hegemony destroyer pays a visit to Elfauf and shoots up a damaged destroyer. Destroyer 1 takes up the pursuit.

Aqoenia Syndicate blockade Ildrau (in the east), and two gas mining stations at my system just NE of my capital.

I reject to use my new Invasion Fleet to invade an independent in the south. Not with two current wars and blockaded from a third.

We have uncovered a deep cover agent from Issuwyn Nation which have been infiltrating us. We still have 1 agent (and I have checked that hiring is fully automatic). This sent my agent up from 111 to 145...

The battle of Elfau goes on. It looks good now, but still some work left. I don't like to be blockaded with no ships present. Just after writing this, the Idrau and one gas mining station blockade ended. Some time later the last blockade also ends.

And we have taken Elfau. 42 troops survived. The Wekkarus are suddenly very low on the diplomacy screen. Strategic value is very low, but they have 9 colonies still.

All empires are at war with someone.

Boskara Collective are the champions with 3 wars.

Ketarov, Narrant, and Wekkarus got only one each.
The two new boskara nations are both at war with only the United Kiadian Alliance.

RE: At the mercy of the AI

Post by Bingeling »

Some musings by me.

First, sorry for butchering the in game names. I am not dyslectic, rather the complete opposite. I see words quickly and as images, and am one of the guys that can read words perfectly well as long as the start and end is ok, and the middle contains the approximately correct letters. This makes me a poor spell checker, blessed by not being too annoyed by small spelling errors, and completely unable to catch what the in game names really are. Kiadians are an example of this, being Kaidans, Kiadans, Kiadians, or something like that. And whatever it is, I recognize it, and have to check some screen to type it correctly.

Some of my issues are shortcomings of the AI. Among this is lacking space ports, construction ships and explorers. As long as I am stuffed with money, a target level of explorers and construction ships should be kept, thinking of maintenance for those as a budget post, so that replacing lost ships is not a long term expense. That would leave the replace decision up to the current balance, which is excellent. Spies are probably victim to the same, give spies a budget post. "I want 3, adjust military ships accordingly".

One feature is the territory map swap spam. The Atuuk are extremely friendly, they want to swap with new nations they are cautious with. Those not extremely friendly do not want this, and reject.

They are crazy and provoke three opponents at once. They are indeed 'extremely reckless', so this explains a lot. Add 'quite aggressive' and this could help the recklessness by hateing their neighbors more easily.

Their upsides are reproduction, and maybe dependability. I would suspect this race is not likely to survive, they will pick fights that they lose. In my last game in full control, I had them as my friend on a defense pact (that the AI bugs and only use as an improved free trade). Of course they are quick to offer this pact, they are extremely friendly after all. They are also 'very dependable' which make them stick to their deals. In that game, they were wiped by the Securans. I guess the Atuuk started that war...

When the Wekkarus is still at war, I fear the war will never end, and this will make the AI never build space ports or more explorers unless I retire my full fleet to make a temporary cashflow surplus. The Boskara is a different matter, but considering the two new Boskara independents, I guess they will eventually be killed off, as they probably have very high war tiredness and shed colonies (my interpretation).

If I were in charge and intent on keeping one war going, I would end the two I got and pick a war with the Issuwyn and grab those two eastern colonies of them. I like clean borders, and the main annoyance is to be flanked by them and have their trade lines over my empire [:@]. Considering the free trade with the Ketarov, I would really like a space port in the NW, but that is not likely to happen, I am afraid. Even if I just conquered a home world up there. It is dangerous to be at -30k cashflow with steady increasing bank balance, you know.

And with -30 it would be far less than a thousand years before my 1600k bank balance is lost. More like 500 years (is the cash flow on a yearly basis).

I kind of want to see how a different race would do, but I still enjoy this game. Seeing the race features in action could be interesting. Maybe take space port and explorer/constructor building as my own task.

RE: At the mercy of the AI

Post by Bingeling »

And the story goes on.

The two Boskara planets found have been reduced to one. One of them was human in the north, and is now independent. This leaves one known target, a rather poor planet in the north east.

Resupply 1 has been in position SW of the former Wekkarus capital system for ages. It moves to my NE space port intending to strike camp somewhere around there. A gas mine is on a gas giant in this system, but does not have a giant caslon store. Invasion and Home fleets aim in that direction too. Invasion fleet is at 8 full ships with 40 troops. The 6 remaining transports are on auto.

Issuwyn Nation keeps offering to lift trade sanctions in exchange for a contested mining base. State is silent on the matter.

The fleets make stations low on caslon. Some bright soul should put energy collectors on them to offset the energy used while idle. Caslon is my most demanded commodity, which should mean my remaining few constructors are focusing on that. Or one can hope.

Countermeasure performance is improved, and they start looking for better crew facilities.

Bases retrofit. It is realized that resort base and research facilities have been forgotten. Fixing this will do no good for the caslon problem, but the advisors must be listened to.

Wekkarus explorers are visiting my home system now and then. Unless I have missed something obvious they should not be within striking range. Tough the quality of my exploration does not make me feel safe. The Wekkarus military strength of 3300 makes me feel safe though. Note Space Port and its defense base have more than 1000, and a 4 ship destroyer fleet in the area has 450.

Just as I have been moving northwards, the Buvu Yagin declare war. It will be fun to eventually try that medium space port I have seen spanking other fleets. Home Fleet and Invasion Fleet turns, with Boskara war falling behind in importance. They have a mining station in Durog, my lone central colony. That one will not grow old, a small fleet left behind when Resupply 1 left for the northeast will make sure of that.

The lone Invasion Fleet ship that was up north takes a solo run at the Boskara Planet. It is 2x2 in quality squares, and has 1 troop.

A mining station in the east has a bleak outlook with a Buvu war ship in system. Apart from the base and that ship, the known asset of them is the town in the south. The last map is still true. They are also at war with Issuwyn and Aqoenia. I have a feeling that we are not the only ones that struggle with our state department.

Just a small check for the going rate of peace. Out of curiosity.

The Boskara: 200k
Buvu Yagin Nation: 3,6M
Wekkarus Hegemony: 9,5K

The Mortalen world in the south with the killer medium space port that has kept me entertained is a 5x5 in quality, and is mostly Haakonish. It is a regional capital, has 5 resources, and among the resources is carbone fibre that I have a small demand for. I notice I do not worry too much, though my war tired state has me worried. I should maybe split the invasion fleet on all systems to reconquer lost colonies soon :-/

The threatening military presence for mortalen in the north east is a resupply ship. Usalea counts its destroyer presence. Among them are 9 ships of 1st Destroyer that heads out for a visit. Predictably the mining station that shares system with the resupply fleet is under attack by ships that have refueled there, 3-4 are present. This is a little SW of the lone known Boskara system, btw. The present mortalen frigates are less powerful than my design.

Emp defenses are ready for use, light torpedo bombers is next weapon focus.

It is asked for a new base retrofit. I realise to even test mining bases. If this is carried through and needs to be done by construction ships, I am looking at about 100 years until something new is built.

Aqoenia syndicate lift their trade sanction. Rejoice.

The awesome area abilities that has been at display at the Mortalen planet in the past, kills two ships of destroyer 1. But the resupply ship loses. Just an escort were present to follow the resupply ship into oblivion. Back to port to repair and refuel for destroyer 1 (one is damaged).

Cabinda 004 the lone attacker arrives at Unirun 1 to invade. The system is empty apart from 1 civilian ship and the lone troop defending. Boskaran Collective will soon be down to 6 planets.

The fruits of war show themselves...

Image

That is my lone, central world. The 25th fleet is present with 4 destroyers that are of little help. They notice a mining station further northwest to kill, and decides to kill that one instead to vent their anger. One of my explorers, cleverly disguised as a gas mining ship, rats on that base.

Iceurerp is soon enough independent. Undirun 1 is conquered, that is a zero sum exchange, apart from Iceurerp being a superior system... The system has a caslon source that would make it possible to put a small fleet there. One can dream... This is the system straight east of my northeastern planet (and space port) visible on the last map.

Another Yuvu base is located southeast of my area by one of my gas mining spies. Raider 2 moves from south central to have fun. Home fleet is just about to land in south central, Invasion fleet and Resupply 1 lags a little behind.

12 new destroyers are ordered at my capital Note which is not too far from the southern front. They are placed in a temporary fleet to ensure they don't run off when complete. The mighty display by the medium space port in south makes me careful, even if observed attacks have been by quite small forces.
A Buvu research station is discovered in the south. The 23rd fleet present with four destroyers makes that trip.

The high command discuss if monitoring stations are a part of their responsibility, but decide against that.

One of the other gas spies notice a Wekkarus mining base in the western areas. The 24th with 10 destroyers protecting the west splits into two 5 ship fleets with one heading off. The 24th does its job well, and the action is followed by a Wekkarus warning to stop attacks. It would be very nice to be made aware of peace treaties. The state department are rather arrogant as they don't tell about their initiatives.

The two other wars are still on...

The Wekkarus scandal makes my two good friends impose trade sanctions on me. I do however still have trade with the Wekkarus. Strange world...

The southern Buvu stations are killed off without diplomatic incidents.

My two remaining exploration ships are soon in the south, ready to be killed off.

Resupply 1 moves to deploy a little east of my southern spaceport, which is low on fuel and a central staging area. Home Fleet did not find enough fuel here.

The 12 destroyers built in Note are ready as the 30th fleet. They move south on full stomachs.

Invasion fleet has one ship with fuel, the rest are dry, and closest fuel source is Note space port. They limp towards the planet where resupply 1 deploys.

The enemy system got 1 research station, a medium space port with 2700 shield and 629 power, and 8 defending troops. They try to hide under their space port, but that does not fools the grand admiral's intelligence section. Please, little explorer, flee that lone frigate and do some good work elsewhere.

Another two mining stations are discovered in the southeast, and a small fleet is dispatched.

Issuwyn Nation declares WAR.

Two full troop transports are refueling in the north. One is sent to each of the north/east Issuwyn colonies without any further info or scouting. The Northern is Ketarov populated and 2x3, while the eastern is Naxx populated and 2x2. Lets hope for low defense.

The Issuwyn cluster in the SW is ignored as of now, I will try the mortalens first. Enemies, please stand in line.

A Wekkarus construction ship arrives to refuel at my gas mine in the east. This feels wrong, so wrong...

Home and Invasion fleets both heads to the resupply ship to find fuel, but a raider fleet is first on the target.

Note begins to build a third resupply ship. There are free planets down there... My gut feeling is that fuel will be tight.
Light bombers are made available to our production lines. Weapon research is moved to point defense weapons. Without me noticing, energy research is on high speed hyperdrives.

Boskara accepts a peace treaty, yay.
Buvu Yagin Nation offers a peace with no conditions

All this peace stuff distracted me from the brave invasion of Ghowa in the Kyrella system. It is now mine with its 134M ketarov and 49M others. It has Unity Forum ruins. One thing is 23% development bonus for colony. Another is 20% diplomacy bonus for the owner. We surely can benefit from that.

The United Kiadian Alliance informs us they have wiped out the Boskara Nation, one of the 1 colony states at war with them.

Still war with Buvu Yagin, so the destroyer attack in mining bases is allowed to proceed. They no longer have two mining bases in the Umiga system.

Resupply 1 has 12338 Hydrogen and 1968 caslon as invasion and home fleets arrive. I fear they will soon be useless. The planet is even on caslon and hydrogen supply.

Afraid that I am bored, the Dhayut declare WAR.

Iceurarp in my central area that rebelled are now Buvu Yagin territory. There is about 10 troops there (not counted) so a swift recapture will not happen.

Ziltrius 3 are revolting. That is the planet conquered from the Dhayut during the last war. The lone troop station there can little do and the colony is lost.

I know two Dhayut places in the NW, their capital in the SW that I previously visited.

The 12 destroyers of the 30th fleet joins the Home Fleet that found enough fuel. Home fleet is now at 28 ships, 1 capital, 6 cruisers and the rest destroyers, which will gather and attack the Medium space port of the Buvu Yagin.

The Dhayut did not accept an offered peace.

The troop transport attacking Tefnyl 6 in the east finds one troop defending. It is conquered, and includes the Garden of Arcadia giving 11% development bonus, and 10% happiness to all empire. Very welcome indeed...

Both two former Issuwyn colonies in the east and northeast are now mine.

Home Fleet has been told to attack Gauxxek the Hakkonish dominated region capital with the scary space port, due south of me.

Even if suggested, Invasion Fleet does not invade Ziltrius 3 that was lost. It has a richer prey in mind. Invasion 2 is gathered from the now full ships gathering troops. 6 ships and 30 troops. They try to gather the best they can.

Image

The feared aoe of the Mortalen Medium Space port goes off as invasion fleet approaches. All 28 ships of the Home Fleet survives, but two cruisers are damaged and left with no hyper drives. Invasion Fleet heads to the location to drop its load on the 9 defenders. Invasion fleet got 35 troops. A new large space port is started and the Home Fleet is happy to destroy enemy money.

Crazed advisors want the home fleet to attack an enemy mining base waaay out east. The 23rd fleet used to base hunting goes instead.

It is a race against the time once a freighter spots a Dhayut colony ship at the now independent Ziltrus 3. The 24th fleet was waiting in the Capredur system next door, and attacks. The enemy colony ship is a slow as mine and die. The 24th find this a nice spot to hang around.

Funds are now down to a scary 1 587 882. Bankruptcy is imminent. The Boskara Collective start trade sanction.

Poor management had the new Resupply 3 leave port on auto, and it has gone waaay east. It is told to land on the gas giant in our new southern province, which is a brilliant, pure caslon source.

Two small destroyer fleets in the north west are sent to Dhayut systems to take a look. The battle for Gauxxek has started and should be a breeze.

Another buvu gas mining station in the south east, 23rd fleet has killed their last target and has fuel enough to go on.

Ketarov lifts their trade sanctions. Thank you. A Boskara agent is captured trying to steal research. My lonely spy is now at 145.

Wekkarus want me to sanction Ketarov. It is up to state, but I would never do that...

The 22nd fleet find the closest NW Dhayut system empty. Invasion 2 heads in that general direction to stop at my NW unless told otherwise.

The battle rages on Gauxxek, the home and invasion fleets waits outside. Resupply 3 closes in on that juicy gas giant in the system.

Point Defense Weapons are approved by the research quality control, and the researchers move on to Advanced area weapons.

The 23rd has a great time killing a mining base, 3 military ships and some civilian. They move back to their southeast central mining station to refuel.

A destroyer from the home fleets follows an enemy way east and is running out of fuel. I am excited about what may be at the journey's end. Will it stop at a gas station in the clouds, or at a star beyond? The answer is a gas mine with quite a few ships around. There is it kills an escort, but run out of fuel and goes to refuel. The 23rd get a queued order to kill that gas mine.

The two NW Dhayut colonies have quite a lot of troops. No invasion order is given, but one destroyer fleet hangs around in each system hoping for action.

The 25th in the NW attack a Dhayut destroyer that arrives. Hm, the Dhayut has taken Ziltrus 3, I thought the 24th were waiting there.

A pirate attacks Bornen Cunn 9 gas mining station. Too sad Raider 6 had refueling there as its last order. And another one, they must lack communication. Or maybe there was not enough time to send an emergency signal...

High Speed Hyper Drives are ready to me made at our construction plants, Enhanced energy collection is next.

We notice a new medium space port being built at our old planet in the Durog system in our central area. Raider 5 is not far away after refueling, and moves in to spoil the party.

We notice an issuwyn gas mining gig, and are lucky enough to check Diplomacy. I can't remember a peace happing, but it may be me forgetting... (Not forgetting, but I may not have noticed). We also find a new city of theirs in the southeast.

Image

From the image. Destroyer fleets sits in the two Dhayut systems in the northwest.
A raider fleet closes in on the new space port under construction north of my capital. We see the two Dhayut towns in the south, the NE being the one that rebelled out of my control. Raider 6 is about to launch from my eastern town to kill the pirate base to the east. Another raider closes in on the previously met gas station in the gas cloud south of this pirate base (by a good distance). It does not have far to go. A fleet sits on a fuel deopt in the Narg Zone in the central north, one of my precious caslon gas mines. The supply fleets are distributed with one in my southern colony, one just north of it on that trade line going east from the space port, and one in the western colony. The poor single military ship east of my south-eastern towns is the former destroyer of the home fleet that chased all the way to that cloud out east and went out of fuel. It aims for the gas mine in the Cuurnakht Expanse which entertains the fleet now on the SE raid front (the 23rd).
Notice my 3 new colonies in the east, and the prized conquest in the far south.

Home fleet launches for the Dhayut capital system to the west just at this time, having filled up its tanks.

It is at 26 ships, having lost one cruiser that is still a wreck, the other have been repaired by a constructor. One destroyer left after doing the long trip east to the gas mine that is about to be killed by another fleet. The fleet next to Zlitrus gets order to move there, maybe they will build a space port I can kill? :)

Repuation is at “notorious”, I really need to kill that pirate base. And about 100 friends of their's. War weariness is rampant. Cashflow is at -10,3K, not bad, but that new planet in the south has a regional capital built, and 141K revenue with 15% tax. It helps. Tax is at 20% max.

It appears the dorks at state went TS at Ketarov, as I have not seen a message about them starting it.

Issuwyn, Kiadian and Wekkarus are the ones trading with me, but only the first two has any volume at all.

And some good news for myself, Resupply 1 has now a bit more than 10K hydrogen, which means they jettison some when needed.
