ranged attacks

Post by dsawan »

Hi, I was wondering. Would it be possible to eventually add ranged attacks to tanks and guns like the 88mm and the tigers and panthers, etc.? i believe PG2 had that feature. The 88mm was so effective at long range and key to success against Russia heavy tanks and british armor in the desert and elsewhere, hence its reputation as a tank killer.

What you ask for makes the game unbalanced.

You can Modify the game to any way you want.

Bad idea in my opinion.  This is not Steel Panthers.

ok. I was playing Overlord and my 88 keeps getting surrounded by several sherman fireflies. Would be ncie to hit them far away before being overwhelmed anyway.

Wouldn't that be already simulated by the Initiative mechanic to some degree.
Maybe these guys need more initiative boost.

PG Scorched Earth had ranged tank fire. It also had rain on the map which was cool. Very soothing rain sounds...

As jomni rightly said, range advantage of heavy guns is simulated by initiative. Having range 2+ direct fire is unrealistic on game scale (hexes ~15 km is size), and it is bad for gameplay either. People already complain that arty might be too powerful, do we really need more ranged units which do not take losses and can bypass all sorts of game mechanics (like ranged tanks shooting infantry in a city, and can no longer fear close terrain, rugged defense etc.)?

I myself changed the range for Maus to 1 (it's a very costly tank and its availability is very small so it shouldn't be unbalanced) and increased by 1 (to 4) 2 German arty (21cm Mrs 18 and 280mm K5), 2 American arty (155mm Long Tom and 8 Inch M1) plus Russian BM-31 Katyusha has now range 3. I hope it will give positive changes.

BTW
I was given an SS MarkIII tank at the beginning of the Low Countries scenario and when I've tried to upgrade it (well, rather check if it's possible) I found out that it cannot be upgraded or downgraded. Is it a bug or only in the later campaigns it will be possible to upgrade it to other types of tanks (there is no problem like this with the SS infantry)?

Regards
Remember, having fun and keeping to the spirit of the game is more important than winning at any cost.

If hex = approx. 15 km, then the artillery range of 3 hexes is a bit unrealistic also, not to mention tripleA's ability. What I would like to see is artillery effectiveness reduces with range. Might as well include that for ranged AAA attacks and defensive fire also.

Yes I know, but in case of arty this is a gameplay requirement. You need 2 range to stand behind your units and shoot at the enemy, and you need 3 range to suppress enemy artillery with yours, both of which are important aspects of artillery usage.

Please don't fix something that isn't broke! In my humble opinion, the ranges are fine. You need range on artillery and AA for gameplay reasons, But nothing else should have range fire at this scale.

Some of the user made equiptment files for PG had ranged fire for AT units like 88 and 128 mm. I can say when I played those campaigns the game play became totally unbalanced. Approaching enemy units were massacred before getting adjacent to friendlies. It became too easy to purchase AT using them as Arty units.
