Legendary Pirates
So... what is the difference between them and regular pirates? They seem to be pretty widespread, but thus far I can't really spot much significant.

They're awesome. Let me take a page from Ashbery's book and refer you to their leader... here he is.

RE: Legendary Pirates
Ok, but seriously they do have some unique effects apart from being pirates that are much nastier than usual. If you play for a while you should see the impact they have on other pirates, which in some cases helps them and in other cases helps you.

RE: Legendary Pirates
Good lord! They just hit one of my spaceports with 4 carriers!
Loving the new improvements. A lot of potential for further expansion on a lot of these new features too, but they are still great in and of themselves. Well done.

I foresee a massive ship build up from the beginning to protect against pirates... and a greater need to smash pirate bases to space dust!

Can you get these guys if you have your Pirates set to "few"?
RE: Legendary Pirates
Yep, they'll still show up eventually (you also need to have the "Enable Disasters and other events" setting enabled in Game Startup)ORIGINAL: Gelatinous Cube

Seriously thought, legendary pirates sound like real deal. Better get ready. [8D]
Honestly, I got little spoiled about them as I checked some data folders while copying my custom soundtrack where it belongs.
Still, I don't know excatly how they work in the game so they will be kinda surprise.

RE: Legendary Pirates
I also encountered some legendary pirates by now.
It was a small cluster of about 10 stars with some good systems in it, between myself on the right side and ai empires on all 3 other sides.
A good place for a forward trading post I figured. So I colonized a planet on my side, leaving 2 other sides open for colonization by ai empires (with the initial small influence sphere only covering about 1/3 of the cluster.
As more of the cluster was explored I found the base of legendary pirates right in the middle of that cluster. And when my small spaceport was nearly finished, great fleet of those pirates jumped in and killed the base.
So I positioned a found capital ship there, which had about 800 firepower, when my building cap was still at 230 for ships...
When the next spaceport was nearly finished on that same planet, the pirate fleet jumped in again. I managed to destroy 3 of their ships and many fighters, but they went straigt for the unfinished spaceport and retreated after killing it, leaving my super-capital nearly untouched.
I was also not strong enough to fight the defenses of the pirate base, so I left the colony without spaceport for a while
Then my explorer disovered loros fruit in this same cluster in a system which was outside my influence sphere.
Since I already had korabbian, I left it for the ai, to see what happens to them.
Various ai empires built mining stations there, all of those were promptly destroyed by the legendary pirates. Then some empire sent a colony ship over there and now the cluster is split in 3 ways, as intended.
I finally managed to wear the pirate attacks down with new 300 size ships and finally built a spaceport on my colony, but havent attacked their base. The colonies of the 2 ai empires have no spaceports yet.
I wonder how this continues, I think I leave the pirates there and watch what happens.
In any case this was a lot of fun and experiences like that at least partly make up for the bugs and issues posted in the tech section and other places.

RE: Legendary Pirates
I've only seen one fleet of legendary pirates and they swarmed through my neighbor's system and then into mine. The ALMOST killed my President (doing a tour of a starbase), lost two starbases, I barely managed to defeat them, and we all took heavy losses. Certainly changed up my game (which was totally peaceful until then)! They REALLY make you want to go hunt them down now and strike their bases because they seem to become much more powerful the longer you let them live... or you could always pay them protection, lol.
RE: Legendary Pirates
Unfortunately I cant pay the legendaries any money.
I would like to ally with them (even for huge sums) and send them to harass specific neighbors without needing to go to war with those neighbors (some insects).
It would be even better if could found pirate bases, give them ships and get a percentage of their "income".
Like the British Empire did against the Spanish. Patrician comes to mind [&o] . That was great.

RE: Legendary Pirates
I have met legendaries 3 times of two games. The first time I got a nice warning when I first encountered them. The last time I did not get a warning until attacking the 3rd defensive base in their system, having killed 2 others and the base itself.
Today in the new game I got a warning, but a new warning going for the last defensive base after killing most ships, two defensive bases and the base itself.
So the warning trigger is not quite stable

Can we mod legendary pirates?

RE: Legendary Pirates
I saw them in my current game with 1 base surrounded by 4 defense installations and a pretty big fleet. I had to send in two fleets to kill it and I still lost a few carriers. About 1600 firepower.
RE: Legendary Pirates
Are we supposed to inherit their fleet under certain circumstances? I did that just now and it felt... wrong. I also had ships from that fleet attacking other AI empires which caused diplomatic incidents. I probably got some 20-30 ships to retire, using the top technology.
