Playing The British Empire

Post by warspite1 »

Well I took the plunge and am just reading the tutorials. Initial impression having just downloaded is that the game looks big! So much information to take in. On the plus side I like the historical names of the units - nice!

its not a great solution to be honest, at least for me it seems very memory intensive and can often make the game hang.

I use a bit of software called 'faststone capture' (I think its similar to FRAPS), the freeware allows you to take complete screen images, the paid version allows to crop the image and add text etc (handy if like me you later on forget why you took a particular image).

GB for a first game ... think that can be filed under the 'brave' decisions, but it is so big and powerful you'll be able to ride out any early mistakes

I use a free tool called Greenshot to take screenshots. The program is very easy to use and has some extra interesting functionalities like the ability for you to create on the fly partial screenshots.

I've got Irfanview - which I assume is similar. The problem is, how do I take a screenshot in the first place? Pressing Ctrl P, which I used for CTGW AAR's - just brings up a dialogue box instead....

I can redefine the hotkeys in Greenshot. For example I use PrtScn or "Ctrl+PrtScn", depending if I want a partial or a full screenshot.
I've just checked with PoN and it work well.

I've used Gadwin printscreen for years or you can use bandicam, it's mostly used for video's but the screenshot feature works well. your right, An AAR without pictures...what the hell[;)]

Cool looking screen. I promised myself I would refrain from buying any new titles until I learned WiF.

My willpower is weak though.

Hmmm.

Look at those rail lines. Russia has none to start with, though one is building from St Petersburg to Moscow.

The upside, it's free. The down side, it takes nearly a year.

Please don't be overwhelmed by first appearances. If you become familiar with the rules, and play the tutorials, you will be well set to Expand the Empire. There are numerous posts and guides, at the AGEOD site, by very experienced players which explain much of the "why and how to" of the game.

I began with reading the rules (which are well written), and as I played the Grand Campaign, referred back to them as needed. You will use the approach which works best for you.

PON is a deep and detailed game, but after you become familiar and comfortable with the units, concepts and game sequence of play, the turns flow right along. There is a wealth of detail and information available for each unit and ship; the illustrations are beautifully done. Leaders are critical - each one has a distinct personality and abilities.

From my perspective, as a WitP AE and WitE player, a two week turn resolution is a delight.

And:

The time line covered by PON is an absolutely fascinating period; I have always wanted a game that would do justice to that era, and have found it in PON.

Stick with it Sir. England expects every man to do his duty - do not fail the Empire!

Respectfully Dispatched from the Colonies,

Mac

Thanks Mac [:)]. The first turn will be a while as I have realised I need to read the instructions a bit more - but will post as soon as I can!

Right, I am working my way through the rule book.

I will be using the game defaults – I will leave well alone here and see what this brings.
First Screen – I press F1 and that brings up the National Summary.

Image

What does this tell me?

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert are on the throne – evening ma’am!

Someone called Lord Russell is the Prime Minister. There are elections every two years. Apparently we can try and favour certain candidates? Okay well so long as the Conservative always wins that’s fine with me.

We have Imperialism, Administration and Diplomacy ratings of 5….. apparently. That should be good considering we’re British, but it actually means “no change from normal” less than 5 is bad more than 5 is good..okay…

No missions or Decrees and laws passed at the moment? I will be getting missions but these are optional, while laws and decrees I don’t really get yet so I will park that.

We also have the following National Attributes:
Research – Standard (2nd highest)
Free Trade
Government – Constitutional Autocracy
Society – Open
Religion – Tolerant
Economy – Free Competition
Army – Professional
Projection of Power – Worldwide
Education – Restricted
Nationalism – Moderate
Bureaucracy – Professional Elite
Organisation – Major Organised (means more diplomats, better war resilience and a couple of other things besides)

Right then – all that sounds good…am I the winner?

No? Oh…

Will follow your AAR closely. I am still in the "read the manual" stage - have to stick with the pdf version of it, since the printed one has too small fonts for my old eyes.

Good to meet a couple WitP-AE players here!

All I can say so far is; this is a massive game and I am looking forward to playing it.

Missions are not that important - if you complete them (I think by the late 1850s) you get a prestige bonus but its not worth making too much effort for.

Laws and Decrees do matter - they will help drive down militancy (all the various reforms on the F1 screen) and some, like education, will improve literacy etc. Some of the decrees on the population screen (F6 if I recall) allow you to speed development and give you popularion boosts.
