saved games won't reload
Went through all the hassle of setting up a Global War game, then played through the first turn and saved, but couldn't open the save. Windows 8. When I click on the name of the savegame from the splash screen, it says it can't load - error report. :-/

What file name did you use?ORIGINAL: gravyhair

EDIT: You might be able to go back to one of the automatic saves, they occur before each major power sets up its units. There are also automatic saves at the start of the weather phase and other start of the first impulse that follow set up. You shouldn't need to go back to the very beginning.

I used the filename 'Fred', and this was under 1.01. Any help? Thanks.

Is the file name missing the .GAM extension? The program does need the GAM extension.ORIGINAL: gravyhair

If that's the case, just rename the file Fred.GAM and the program should be able to restore your saved game.

I found a similar problem. I was setting up USA, and when I clicked end-phase, I got an application error, with various options. I selected 'continue', and immediately saved the game and exited. I do not know whether the error report was sent or not.
Upon restarting the game, and loading the saved game, I got 'Error loading ...'. My guess is this file is toast due to the earlier error.

If you can duplicate this, I would like to know how. Sending in the Mad Except report with a screenshot will make sure this makes it to my task list to investigate.

I looked for the report, but only found a RecordLog_<timestamp>.csv, last modified at the time of the error. If this is (or the save game) is useful, let me know.
I'll see if I can reproduce.
The first time I clicked 'end phase' toend the USA setup phase, (global war), I got a message about insufficient convoys in West Coast Sea area. So I took one I had put in port in Norfolk, and dropped it into the sea area in the global map view. Then, I clicked end the USA setup phase again, and received the error. To confuse things just a little, I also futzed with screen layouts between the two attempts to end the phase.

The RecordLog is of marginal use to me for debugging. Not worth the trouble of you sending it to me. If you do see the error again, please try saving the BugReport.txt file, or sending it to MadExcept@MatrixGames.com.ORIGINAL: sanch

Ok.
Autosave 'Setting Up United States.GAM' also will not load. And that's the only autosave I can find (grr). So it appears I would have to start over to attempt to reproduce.

RE: saved games won't reload
I suspect my real problem was memory-related. I did have a bunch of other applications open at the same time, and I noticed that MWiF likes lots of memory.

Restarting the program may be necessary to restore a saved game. There is a check to see if you are trying to restore a 4th game in a row from within the program without restarting. In that case you should get a warning message first.

What is the full path name + file name for your saved game file?
Did you try using the Browse button to find and restore your saved game? There have been times in the past when that worked while the radio buttons didn't.

So you were able to restore your saved game?[&:]
No, and I overlaid the file so cannot even try.
But when I restarted MWiF, I hit an error in the scrapping phase, which I successfully got by several times before. So I restarted again, looked at task manager, and noticed that MWiF had over 500M of memory. And this is on my development machine, with SQL Server (memory hog itself) running, all 3 manual PDF's open, and several other programs.
This is why I suspected a memory problem.
So I ran Windows update to get to current (Win 7 Home Premium), deinstalled SQL Server, restarted, and killed off any executable that wasn't necessary.
Now MWiF runs just fine. Need another monitor, tho.

Thank you for persevering.[&o] I'll add this to my list of things to ask players who have a similar problem in the future.

Solved it!
Hey Shannon, just so you know, the problem was that my savegame file defaulted to another program. If a person has the Warplanner 2.0 PBEM program installed - which is based on GMT's "A World At War" grand strategic wargame, similar to WiF - then the savegame files in WiF default to Warplanner and won't open kn WiF. When I manually changed the savegame file under Properties to open with WiF, and then restarted WiF and opened the savegame with the browse function, it worked. FYI. I am sure there will be other wargamers who have both programs. Thanks.

By the way, section 1.2 of the Players Manual does mention that the GAM extension might be in conflict with other games.[;)]

Well, now the problem is back again. Can't reload save no matter what I do. Also, when I upgrade USSR Far East infantry to Siberians at setup, the first unit upgrades fine but both successive units disappear - lost forever.

RE: saved games won't reload
Just ran into this one, Steve. In my case, this happened to me somewhere between Land Movement and Land Combat Declaration, in impulse 10 of the 2nd turn. Tried a number of variations to see which autosaves weren't loading, and what might have happened to corrupt the game file (if that's the case). I haven't been able to identify the problem yet, but I'll try again tomorrow. If I do figure out where the glitch is occuring, I'll put a bug report together for it. I don't recall having an ME Report prior to this.
Sorry I can't be of more help, but I'll keep my eyes open.
