Online gaming question

Command Ops: Battles From The Bulge takes the highly acclaimed Airborne Assault engine back to the West Front for the crucial engagements during the Ardennes Offensive. Test your command skills in the fiery crucible of Airborne Assault’s “pausable continuous time” uber-realistic game engine. It's up to you to develop the strategy, issue the orders, set the pace, and try to win the laurels of victory in the cold, shadowy Ardennes.
Command Ops: Highway to the Reich brings us to the setting of one of the most epic and controversial battles of World War II: Operation Market-Garden, covering every major engagement along Hell’s Highway, from the surprise capture of Joe’s Bridge by the Irish Guards a week before the offensive to the final battles on “The Island” south of Arnhem.

Online gaming question

Post by Major SNAFU_M »

Hi all,

I am thinking about purchasing a second copy of this game for my son (13) to play against.

He has played the game a bit, and seems to in very interested. The move a single unit at a time games are too "slow".

When I am traveling, I anticipate few or no connection problems, BUT at home I have struggled with many games and I wanted to see what others have experienced.

Our home is completely supplied via a wireless router, except for the main entry point of the service. Both my computer and computer my son will use are served by the same wireless router. This is usually where the major problems begin in that trying to play any game where the data has to pass *within* the same wireless environment fails.

Has any one here played online with an opponent where both computers were one the same wireless network with connectivity being supplied to both machines via the same router?

Regards,

I'd try it but I'm unsure if it's possible (I dare say it's not allowed) to have 2 copies of command ops on different pcs if you only purchased one. I've played wirelessly over internet without difficulties but not on the same LAN. Bletchley Geek said it was possible to hotseat on the same pc. If I was having difficulties on wireless I'd definitely make sure I had an N standard router and wireless adapters as they're so much faster than G.

Hi Skarp.

First sentence - I am purchasing a second copy. My concern is about 2 wireless connections on the same LAN being able to play the game. Everything we have is "N".

I understand - I was simply wondering if you could test without a second bought copy. The suggestion from Bletchley_geek had IP addresses being assigned so presumably it could played over the network running two instances of ComOps on the same PC - I'm trying to find the post now. I can't think why you should experience difficulties when on the same LAN at home. It ought to be easier.

sorry found the post and tried it although running two networked instances of ComOps on the same PC worked it didn't use the wireless connection to do so. I hoped it would.

I wouldn't expect that to be a problem. But if you found that it was (or to help with those games where it was a problem), you could try using a secondary router.

Many wireless routers also have ethernet ports. You could plug in a second wireless access point to your router. There are also some wireless bridges you could try. This one looks like it might do the trick. I believe you can then establish a 2nd wireless network.

But I think I'd just try with existing setup first to see if it was a problem. (although the router above might be handy when traveling)

I've played myself (don't ask...) on 2 computers via our single router, no problem (at least I don't recall any). Was a while back though. I had to do the usual port forwarding stuff to play it at all on line. That was a single copy of the game, running on 2 computers. Matrix have said in the past, I believe, that you can install on multiple computers if they're all your own. I have mine on all my computers (2 laptops and a desktop).

Sorry. Didn't want anyone to think I was trying something underhanded.

Thanks. Since it will be my computer, but another user who will be using it when I am traveling, I feel that a second copy is mandatory.

Thanks. I wouldn't dream of suggesting anything nefarious.

It should work fine Major. Just don't get the computers too close to each other, since Windows 7 wireless drivers tend to have trouble when coping with mutual interference between emitters.
