moving HQ units

Command Ops: Battles From The Bulge takes the highly acclaimed Airborne Assault engine back to the West Front for the crucial engagements during the Ardennes Offensive. Test your command skills in the fiery crucible of Airborne Assault’s “pausable continuous time” uber-realistic game engine. It's up to you to develop the strategy, issue the orders, set the pace, and try to win the laurels of victory in the cold, shadowy Ardennes.
Command Ops: Highway to the Reich brings us to the setting of one of the most epic and controversial battles of World War II: Operation Market-Garden, covering every major engagement along Hell’s Highway, from the surprise capture of Joe’s Bridge by the Irish Guards a week before the offensive to the final battles on “The Island” south of Arnhem.

moving HQ units

Post by TorpX »

How do you move a HQ unit without moving it's subordinates?

In the stuck in the teeth battle, I noticed the 112th Reg. HQ was in what was a frontline position,
but when I tried to move it to a safer location, the AI interpreted this as an order to move
the whole regiment. Since this was the highest level of command, there was no higher HQ to
order it to move back. What do you do about this?

You will have to group all the subordinate units and give them a (defend) in situ order, then give your order to the HQ. You will then have detached all its subordinate units, so the order won't apply to them. I think that's the only way. Once the HQ is where you want it you can add it to the subordinate group and again give a (defend) in situ order and it will then re-assume command in the position you placed it. To group units you can lasso them by click-dragging or select each one in turn with Ctrl-click. Once the HQ has moved if you click on one of the subordinate units you will see new command lines (they will have picked one of their number as a new leader). Click on the new leader then Ctrl-click on the HQ, then give your defend in situ order. This will add the HQ back to the group. Hope that's clear enough.

Yeah its not easy to do this unfortunately.
I often wonder if the HQ's should have a special free move option in the orders, that will allow you to give a move order to a HQ without if effecting the other attached units.

Ok, I think I understand. You basically have to tear away every other unit to isolate the HQ.
I would do that if I was faced with the same situation and saw it at the start. Unfortunately,
if you have the subordinate battalions doing other things, this would risk messing up you
previous orders.

I think dazkaz15 has a good idea. It shouldn't be that hard to move a HQ and staff. Maybe put
in a penalty order delay for other units while it's in transit?

Thanks for the replies.

What I suspect you are really after is what I call "HQ basing" where the HQ is given a separate basing task within the overall mission. We currently do this for attacks. That took a lot of work. Doing it for all mission types will involve a lot more work. I agree it would be nice to do, but it's not top of our wish list at the moment.
