Energy collection, do I really need reactors?

Post by Kaerwek »

Despite adding energy collectors that collect enough energy to exceed static usage, I cannot remove the reactors without it complaining.

Do I really need reactors, if I don't have anything that uses energy actively and thus only static energy usage needs to be covered?

reactors provide energy storage, i don't think anything that uses energy can function without energy storage.

The main reason why you need reactors is because otherwise the design won't be considered as valid, even if you don't really need them for what you want the design to do.

Subtle nuance : anything that needs energy to function probably can't function without energy storage. Shields might still function without energy storage. Needs testing.

Why the nuance : Construction Yards, Gas Extractors and Energy Labs use energy (if available), but don't need energy to function. (This is probably one reason why you're forced to put reactors on everything.)

Plus I thought energy collectors only work on ships/bases when they are stationary and they collect more energy the closer they are to a star.

The only energy collectors I've put on ships have been on mining ships/constructors. The point of the rest of the ships are to be mobile traveling from system to system. If you only had energy collectors the ship would stall mid warp between systems.

Now, collection to fuel could spawn a whole new debate! ;)

I read somewhere that engines take their energy directly from the reactor, not the energy storage. But since you will have no energy storage without a reactor, this won't matter much.

I look at it like this, reactors create energy, collectors store energy.

Nope, they both create energy. Only reactors have energy storage...

Why this thread anyway, when there's a whole guide about energy?

I stand corrected. Thanks.

Check BlueTemplers post citing a thread all about energy collectors. Instead of starting new threads and waiting for answers.
