Hello I Just Bought and am Excited

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Hello I Just Bought and am Excited

Post by goulash »

Ok a noob to the genre player here but up to now, I have bought a couple of Titles from either Slitherine, Matrix e.g. Command, air naval, WIF, Panzer corps, Warhammer and now this.

The only one that has disappointed me slightly is the WIF because of the initial Price yet still waiting for a stable version the game where I do not have to do a workaround. Sorry but as a noob, I am totally daunted to trying to search for workaround on a game that complex so just want at least the basic settings game to be stable.

I just get sucked into the hype from the last game so with this coming out, I thought I would give it a go to see if I am getting a complex but rewarding war game experience.

Anyway, hi all,

I am not sure if I will like it but am will to at least give it a try. Has anyone got any noob tips other than watch the vids and do the tutorials and before you say it, read the manual [:D]. I mean tips that make players good, tactics, must not do and must do's. I am keen to find a decent war game to play multiplayer on and possibly join some group into the same.

75% downloaded. If I am back in a hour moaning, tell me to suck it up. Saying that I have not really moaned about past purchases and I see a update is eventually coming for WIF. Please Matrix, ensure WIF is tidied up as much as possible for us noobs [&o]

Play the Germans first, it is easier to learn the basics. Just keep the manual handy. Enjoy.

Well been playing this past 2 hrs and let me put it this way = GREAT GAME.

Love the choice to see resolution at different scales etc. Feel complex yet does not feel too daunting to learn.

I pretty much jumped straight in and although a couple of things have confused me, I am sure the fault is on my end and not the game e.g. How do I get the camer to follow the unit when it is doing its move as it seems to stay on part of map you set as destination and you have to manually pan camera to get back to ship as it sets off from port.

Anyway, this defo a good invest and I would love it if naval ships were in as well but can understand the abstraction.

I would like to know how to do this as well. I always like to be able to watch my units as they move, mostly to keep my bearings straight on everything.

You can't, as far as I know. You can toggle the animations off in the preferences, or speed them up. You can also press the space bar and the unit will immediately move to the destination hex.
All understanding comes after the fact.

But we want to watch :). Shame, I hope they add that feature in someday. No need for land units cos they don't move too many hexes but air and naval do and I don't like zooming out to see or skipping so I guess I just have to manually use arrows to direct the camera manually.

Not a complaint just a preference of mine as I want to play slow to learn more.

It is a good suggestion. I also like to play this way.
