Tutorial: How to Air Transport Units

Post by Chuske »

Relevant manual sections 5.4.5.2 and 17.3.8

This tutorial will explain how to transport a unit by air to a friendly airbase or hex adjacent to one. This will not explain dropping airbourne troops by parachute or glider.

The unit to be transported MUST be:-

1) Non-Motorised
2) Located on a friendly airbase (better but not necessary if it's at an airbase with transport airgroups)
3) Have at least 1 movement point left

Main steps are:-

1) Press F9 once to get AIR TRANSPORT Unit mode
2) Select unit to be transported
3) Shift-Right click on target hex (must be friendly airbase or adjacent hex)
4) Select transport groups you want to fly the unit (they must have 0 miles flown and not be assigned to any combat drops) and select launch.

For the transport mission to go ahead there must be enough transport units to fly the units in no more than 2 sorties and the target base must be within flying range of the transport groups.

Also make sure your air transport groups are not set to rest

Example from Westwall scenario - Flying 52nd Air Portable Division to Brussels

We are going to fly the 52nd Air Portable Division to Belgium from the UK. The Division starts in Middle Wallop AF base in Hampshire

Image

If we look in F10 view and filter for transport groups we can see there are plenty of groups in the area, so although not in the same hex as the unit they are close enough to fly in without using too much mileage.

Image

We now press F9 so it says AIR TRANSPORT Unit at the top of the screen. Then we left click the units hex and then on the unit itself in the sidebar to the right.

Image

This is our target Brussels AF base in Belgium.
Image

We Shift-Right Click on Brussels to get the air group selection screen. All the available transport groups are automatically selected, plus fighter protection. If we look at the bottom we see that we must transport the unit in no more than 2 sorties meaning the capacity of the aircraft must be less than twice the load cost

Image

If we deselect all but one of the transport groups you can see that the capacity is now far too small and the launch button is no longer available

Image

If we gradually add transport groups until the sorties required reduces to 2 then the launch button reappears

Image

We can now fly the unit, so select launch button and you will see the unit fly in. Note we lost 2 planes and also the men being transported by them!

Unit now in Brussels

Thanks....one quick thing I would add to this, is that only transport units with 0% travelled can be used for Unit Transport. So, you cannot use any transport planes that you have already moved that turn.

That is very important to keep in mind if you plan any unit moves; get those going before you re-base any transport planes

Great tutorial. But if only 2 airplanes were shot down, why the transfer lost 950 men. That was from accidents? Or it was the tail of the division being left in England as happened with the airborne divisions?
If you find yourself in a fair fight, you didn't plan your mission properly.

The lost men are not always dead, the game will show show disrupted men as losses as well, they will come back in a turn or two. Left behind, drunk, barfing, whatever. My dad's comments on C47 flight makes me think 'barfing'.

Great, concise tutorial. Many thanks. But I tried this in Westwall as a way to get 1st AB BR Corps HQ over to Brussels and it won't let me select the unit. Anyone know why? I assume - for Market Garden - that there has to be a way to get the airdrop units HQ into the dropzones too? Or at least near them? But I don't seem to be able to work it out.

Cheers.

UPDATE: Ignore this post. I get it now. It's motorized.
