Combat Setup Screen and Spacebar

VR designs has been reinforced with designer Cameron Harris and the result is a revolutionary new operational war game 'Barbarossa' that plays like none other. It blends an advanced counter pushing engine with deep narrative, people management and in-depth semi-randomized decision systems.

Combat Setup Screen and Spacebar

Post by 76mm »

p 127 of the manual says that to add attacking units in the Combat Setup Screen, hit the spacebar. It also says to hit the spacebar to initiate the attack.

This probably explains why I've had several attacks launch prematurely when I hit the spacebar while setting up a combat.

Can someone explain how to avoid launching a combat prematurely when hitting the spacebar?

I also urge the devs to consider using different keys to select units and launch attacks.

if you have a unit selected, and have combat initiated eg have selected a enemy unit etc you can press the space bar on any of you units near to the one you wish to attack to add it to the combat with a press of the space bar, if you haven't a friendly unit selected, it will initiate combat as per the manual.

now press the space bar on the top unit in either stack, while pressing the left mouse button on the stack will shuffle it to keep putting other units on the top so you can space bar them into combat

using list and all adds anyone in range for combat, where as the space bar can let you select one from each stack or more so you can get more of a bonus, so for me it works well, but it also took me a while to learn it and make it work for me, as it's new i at first also didn't like it, but once mastered you can use less, but attack for all sides, and get a better combat odds with the bonuses used[&o][&o][&o]

3 units imo in this attack not four would have been better, one from each stack, but if i had 4 sides free or open flanks etc, i would have used 4 units to attack one, this way i get a bigger bonus that costs less in real terms i most of the time i won't suffer much loses as the bonus makes it a really smart move etc, might not sound correct but either way it works, where as the developers just explain it all better than i can do[&o][&o][&o]

Thanks. I still think it would be better to use a different key (Enter?) to initiate combat. I usually select units for combat using the spread out unit view, and frequently initiate combat accidently when I fail to click off the unit before hitting space again.

must admit at first when testing it, i launched more than a few silly attacks with my HQ's and stacks of 5/10 Soviets and laughed when i died by mistake, so yes keyboard re map would help, but i'd guess it may be some work involved to do it, but most seem to be ok once they get used to it, but again it all depends on feedback and others opinions as i can only speak for myself as a tester nothing more tbh, seems like the undo button, for everyone that doesn't like it, there seems to be the same amount than don't mind, so it's a balance atm[8|][;)]

Hi,

Think of the Space bar as a 'YES' key and ESC as a 'NO, I've changed my mind' key and you can't go wrong.

Cheers,

Problem is, I do a lot of selecting units to see where they could move, then dismiss it without moving with the space bar. I can do that by hovering my left hand over the M and space bar. Using esc would require moving my left hand back and forth between esc and M; most inconvenient.

I'd greatly prefer space bar=no.

Yeah, but kind of confusing since the space bar effectively cancels moves (at least that's how I use it), so sometimes spacebar means "cancel" and sometimes it means "execute".

Yeah, I just accidentally had 2PG HQ do a solo attack on a stack of Russian units. Ooops...

Is there a reason more right click options aren't used? Left click select your unit , right click move, left click select enemy unit , right click enter attack mode. While in attack mode, left click to select your unit , right click add to attack, space bar execute.

Hi Budd,

More and more gamers are asking for it. What I can say is that I am looking into it.

Messing around with the interface while in delecate post-release weeks is not something that is going to happen. However.. I am not negative about some changes. No promises as usual, but its on a list for sure.

Best wishes,
Vic

All I ask is that whatever is chosen is consistent across all modalities and windows. My vote is for ESC="no" and ENTER="yes" with SPACE="no" for movement since it is so convenient there next to the M key, i.e. an alternate "no" key. And yes, mouse clicks should be consistent with majority of software practices.
Thanks.
