@ Matrix: Gary Grigsby's Tactical Wargame...any news?

Post by wodin »

A new Gary Grigsby tactical wargame was mentioned awhile ago by Slitherine.

I was wondering if there was any news?

Has work started?

If not is there a rough idea on when it will begin?

It's the one PC game that is rumoured to be in the pipeline I have any real interest in.

Do you mean "Steel Tigers" the suggested spiritual successor to Steel Panthers?

This if from Febuary 2015:
tm.asp?m=3799918
This is from June 2015:
tm.asp?m=3885806
And the latest news was this post (#13) from January 2016:
fb.asp?m=4002987
ORIGINAL: Erik Rutins

I'm planning to give the members of the SPWAW community the first chance to be part of Steel Tigers early in the process, we're just still working on enough architectural stuff now that we're not quite at that point yet. I would very much like to have strong SPWAW community involvement, input, feedback, advice, etc. and make sure we bring the best parts of SPWAW and all the great work the community has added forward with the new engine to secure the future of SP-style gaming.

Regards,

- Erik

Actually, I thought "Tigers on the Hunt" was supposed to be that tactical wargame from Gary Grigsby. Now, I'm a little bit surprised. With GG's title being yet another tactical game, and TotH already in place, it's getting a bit crowded in the niche...

I really can not see any competition between TotH and the Steel Tigers project.

Sorry if I offend anyone but in my opinion Tigers on the Hunt is your standard old school ugly looking and dry/slow cardboard counters on a simple hex grid type war game of the ancient past. I'm sure there is a niche market for that type of game but Steel Panthers successor it is not.

Do you know anything about ST? Any screens? I wonder how it will differ from SP or TotH...

I think that they are not in that point in the development yet. Though if I understand correctly they are going to use a new game engine that is based on the Battle Academy games. So probably squares instead of hexes and 3D graphics.

I hope that they will change the scale of the game to be more realistic than the old 50m per hex that was in the old Steel Panthers games. Back then computers were limited by lower resolutions and slow cpu's.

Ofcourse with an option to zoom out to see the bigger picture.

Coincidentally I made this simulated screenshot of how I would like the scale to be in SPWAW. With 10m hex size. [:'(]

Squares?

Hmm well I love Battle Academy so I should avoid complaining I suppose.

I wonder though, if they are using squares, won't it just be Battle Academy again?

Never to crowded..I personally haven't come across one that does what I want yet.

You'll probably find far more Operational and Grand strat wargames here than tactical.

No one has made a "monster" tactical wargame since Steel Panthers. So I can't wait.

I'm hoping for multi level buildings, tracking individual soldiers within a squad..so no squad, half squad etc. Good engineering features including variety of mines, fortified buildings etc.Do urban fighting well. Indepth command and control\comms. A good Tac Ai. Pref WEGO. Campaigns.

Do the things that people alwasy ask for but are never done.

I have no inside knowledge of anything just piecing together what I have read before on the forums.

Regarding the hex vs. squares thing I am not sure about it. I said "probably" just based on the game engine they intend to use.

Also the discussion about the game engine was here:
fb.asp?m=3889165

OK just read that the SUB engine i.e Battle Academy is the basis of the new Archon engine that will be used for Steel Tigers....make your own conclusions.

From Pip over at Slitherine

"We are continuing to support the STUB engine going forward, and it is the basis for the new Archon engine too.

Cheers

Pip"

So is ST going to be a watered down Steel Panthers that will sell on mobiles etc, like a gritty Battle Academy? I know there is Tigers on the Hunt in development which you'll say is for the hardcore however in my opinion it has a long way to go and isn't what a new SP would be like. I really hope this isn't the case and ST is a true successor to SP doing what SP did well even better and adding to it. Combat Leader was looking like it could have been the new SP but you dropped it!!
You are confusing engines with games. Even with BA the only thing stopping a game from being as hardcore as SP++++ is the designer. STUB and Archon are designed to put all the power in the hands of the designer. ST is going to lead on PC, no compromises.

Cheers

Pip

yup, agree with Wodin here. I had hoped that Tigers on the Hunt would be at least close, but it turned out to be something other than what I was looking for.

Using the BA2 game engine was know about since the idea/ game became public. If you looked at some of the mods
in BA2 of converted ASL scenario, you would be shocked at what this engine can do [;)]

I'd like to try one of the converted scenarios as I have been pleasantly surprised by the BA AI at times. Any suggestions on what to try? I have all the modules.

I wouldn't be too quick in passing judgement on Steel Tigers. The game is still in early in development and there has simply not been enough information given to jump into any conclusions.

We do know that Gary Grigsby (2by3 games) is involved in it. The same guys who made the original Steel Panthers games so I have confidence that they know what they are doing.

Sure if the game turns out to be nothing like the old games then thats that. But really there is nothing to lose here. It's not like anybody else is even going to try to make a successor to the Steel Panthers series. After all it's already been 21 years since the original Steel Panthers was released.
