Island Troop Limits

Post by Le Ricain »

Many of the islands in the game have limits on how many troops may be based there. However, it is not clear how this troop level is determined. Many times I have landed on a small island (6,000 troop limit)and have discovered that my 4,000 troop unit is too large. It would seem that guns and tanks are counted as well. If so, what effect do these have on the total, as it does not seem to be as easy as one gun or tank equals one soldier? Also, on enemy controlled islands where do I find the total number of my troops? All that I been able to find is that island identifier will be white if ok or red if not ok, but not indication of how much over the limit. Thanks for any help.

cohimbra is correct. It's a stacking limit, not a troop limit. The limit was determined by the "size" of the island. Compare the big island in the Hawaii chain to Tarawa. Tarawa is tiny compared to it. Depending on the mod or not, some inland locations have a stacking limit as well....GP

I think part of the confusion is the way the cursor rollover shows "troop count" - it only counts the combat troops, not the support troops. The stacking cost figure that cohimbra highlighted includes support troops.

You can also get an accurate total on your troops if you own the base and look at the base screen where it shows the stacking limit and then the number of actual troops on the ground.

If you don't own the base and have several units in the hex, click on the LCU icon dot to bring up the summary screen for all LCUs. It will tally the total fighting troops and the total support troops at the bottom. Note that you can overstack considerably (up to about X2) with not too bad a supply penalty but don't go much higher unless you are going to attack right away and can feed lots of supply into the hex.

It is impossible to capture and hold some of those smaller atolls or islands when keeping to those "troop limits", and any time you are "over" those limits, you will burn through supply as if the grunts are all over-eating on a non-stop anti dieting binge.

That said...they ARE your troops and if the atoll/island is that important to you....it will NOT sink the island.

Thanks to all for clearing this up for me. I, also, did not know about possible over stacking.

If you are assaulting dun in Atolls you are going to have to over stack as the attacker. That means you will have to run a steady stream of supply while your troops are there. God bless the LST.....
