Look at the coast of the USA and you will see some sea hexes with red cross hatches. Put an Axis naval unit on one or more of those hexes and those hexes are considered to be mined.

I'm still a bit confused about the actual affect of this, can anyone explain?

I'd like to know also, never tried that in SC3, if an hex is mined, how do you remove them?

I don't think hexes stay mined, I think it's just something that happens that turn

There are no actual 'mines'. Having a naval unit on the red crosshatched hex meets the requirement. Moving off the hex ends it. If a unit is on a red hex, then the US will suffer some MPP penalties at a resource.

Okay, so the port owner (Canada or USA) gets an MPP penalty - is this more effective than disrupting convoys? Would seem riskier!

Does a sub have to be in "hunt" mode for this to work or can it also happen in "silent" mode?
I would think that this should be allowed (i.e., laying mines while submerged) given that it would more accurately model the laying of mines from subs.

Also, do surface ships have to be set to convoy raiding when positioned on the red crosshatched hexes to be considered in mine laying mode?

Just their presence alone will trigger it, irrespective of their mode.

Thanks Bill.

So it would be wise then to have subs in silent mode when attempting this, to make them less detectable, right?

Would there likewise be any benefit to not having surface ships in raiding mode when "mine laying", since this is not required?

Are ships in raiding mode more easily spotted/detected?

You're right about the subs, and for the surface vessels the Raider mode only matters if you are on or adjacent to a convoy line.

Did this in an AI game before England and France declared war, I sent my fleet out beyond their knowledge. The whole time while attacking France, they messed with the ports, causing maximum havoc. I had to take a surface ship with, because the Canadians and the British have destroyers nearby. It did pay off, but I would never try it once the Americans are aboard.

How many MPP are lost when mining or disrupting a port? Is it greater than attacking a convoy?

It temporarily damages resources thus reducing the amount of MPPs transferred via convoy. It's not necessarily more economical than raiding, but can be useful if you have quite a few raiders available.
