The Napoleonic Wars 1805-1815

Post by SIPRES »

A very big challenging campaign,
At first I wanted to make a campaign on peninsular campaign only (as a test), then I finally change my mind and go for the full Napoleonic period.

I am using v1.16 Beta right now as it allow me to use 10 Majors powers.
The campaign map and Gfx are still under design.

If any modder is interested to participate in this "huge" project just PM me.

HOLY COW!!![X(][X(][X(]
This looks like a dream coming true!
I wish I could help but I fear I would just slow you down and ruin the great quality of your work.

This definitely looks worth waiting for though.
For as long as it takes...

Cheers & Happy New gaming/modding Year![:)]

Very big indeed. Being familiar with both Strategic Command (and my Advanced Third Reich mod) and Empires in Arms development, I have enough on my plate but will offer a few comments:

1. At this scale, you probably want to use divisions and Corps commander HQ units? A full and accurate Napoleonic Wars OOB will be challenging at division scale versus corps scale.

2. Use of MOBILIZATION scripts and such may prove to be challenging in trying to recreate the many DOWs, surrenders, and changes of alliances and allegiances during the full Napoleonic Wars period. Operational-level campaigns might be more practical, but then you would need separate campaign files (maps, scripts, etc.) for each. A single, monster campaign will be daunting.

3. Strategic Command's grand strategy features for research, production, supply, etc. are geared towards WWII industrialized total war and need to be carefully applied for the Napoleonic Wars period. Diplomacy will be important. My recommendation is KISS; Keep It Simple Stupid.

Good luck. With FOW features, this should be very interesting to play!

1. At this scale, you probably want to use divisions and Corps commander HQ units? A full and accurate Napoleonic Wars OOB will be challenging at division scale versus corps scale.

I plan to use a mix of divisions and Corps and use French OOB as an organisation reference.
The problem is that there is a lot a variation in therms or organisation between each major power (and I didnt check Ottoman empire yet....)
So Roughly I will set an Infantry corps as 20.000-30.000men
and an Infantry Division as 8.000-12.000men
The Cavalry will remain as divisional scale 3000-4000men
Artillery will be abstrated (or maybe a single unit as a "Grande Batterie" for French and Russians)

You are right, the difficulty will be to handle the Nations or minors wich switch side several times during the conflict.
For the campaign lenght I may split in 3 parts as follow:

Part I: 1805-1807
From Ulm to Tilsit
Part II: 1807-1810
Campaign in Portugal, the penisular campaign (I), The Walcheren expedition, The Austrian campaign in 1809
Part III: 1811-1815
the penisular campaign (II), War of 1812 (USA), Invasion of Russia 1812, War of liberation 1813, The France Campaign, and the 100's days

There will be also some smaller conflict (Russo Swedish war, Russo Ottoman war, ect......)

3. Strategic Command's grand strategy features for research, production, supply, etc. are geared towards WWII industrialized total war and need to be carefully applied for the Napoleonic Wars period. Diplomacy will be important. My recommendation is KISS; Keep It Simple Stupid.

KISS is a concept I like
Obviously research will remain very basic (something like a "military reform" will improve units stats)
Diplomacy will be complicated for sure, but I will try to "follow" the historic flow.
For Production, I didnt think about yet, but for sure I will have to find something to recreate the continental blockade effect and many other things I guess

Good luck. With FOW features, this should be very interesting to play!
Thanks for your comments

You could make Arty a unit upgrade Tech (just use the mobilization slot).

Thanks for the suggest, its a good idea but what do you mean by "mobilization slot"
I guess one of the manual upgrades to be tweaked?

Yes, there are a limited number (3) of upgrades on units. Land units have 1: Weapons Tech (e.g. Adv. Armor, or Inf Weapons, or AT), 2: Anti Aircraft, and 3: Mobility.

You could use the AA slot/position as well.

Wow SIPRES, this is an ultra-huge project...and a worthy successor to the unfortunately buried "The Rise and Fall of An Empire!" Mod.

Get ready for many months of work. Once I'm done with my WW 1 mod, I could get in and try some scripts. Or what else will be done then. Maybe you can also recycle some of our unused sound and image files from the 1776 project?

Merci Konstantin

With your Permission I would like to use sounds files you did provide for 1776.
For the graphics, I did already some files (it will be more classic boardgame style than 1776)
I will maybe employ the 1776 user interface files I made or maybe reskin it, will see...

Good luck with WWI

Christophe
