Bleached Map_v2.1 Map Mod

Post by PHalen »

Now that the extremely handy mod selector feature has been implemented into WaW_v1.03, this is just a notification in this forum that version 2.1 of the Bleached Map mod is available.

The Bleached Map mod is a map mod that works for both “War in Europe” and “World at War” with no other game changes what so ever.

Features:
• Significantly paler/bleached maps.
• Less bleached major rivers, to make them easier to distinguish from normal rivers.
• Less bleached railroads, to make them a bit clearer.
• Less bleached recourses (i.e. cities, towns & ports etc.)
• New in v2.1: New weather tiles, based on files generously provided by IronX. Thanks!

The Bleached Map mod comes in two flavors:
• With mine & oil symbols instead of 3D sprites to make mine & oil objective hexes easy to spot:

• For those who prefer a more consistent map look:

Installation instructions:
tm.asp?m=4608689

A zoomed out sample from the opening of WaW campaign “1939 World at War”.
With mine & oil symbols and with National Colours enabled.
A sample of the new rain & storm tiles can be seen in post #6. Thanks again IronX!

Excellent work; it provides greater contrast between plains, fields, forests, etc. too! Thanks.

Very many thanks. I find the darker map can make things look very cluttered. Good work!

Much better map than stock. Thanks so much for the effort.

Now how about making the map bigger lol.

I think this is my favorite terrain mod.

The colors look great, and it works with both Sipres' and IronX counter mods.

The dark shades of the vanilla map are too cluttered and jarring.

This is much easier to look at, and it has the feel of an old paper map.

Hey fulcrum28,
It’s because the zip. files in my Dropbox unfortunately contained a WiE only version of the Bleached Map mod…[:-]
Sorry about that!
The links in post #1 are now corrected to a Beached Map mod that can be used for both WiE and WaW.

Thank you Phalen for this amazing mod and for the update. I was noticing the same red X effects. Imagine my excitement returning from a brief holiday to find the issue handled.

I'm a big fan of the work you've done on the terrain, as I think our eyes are of similar vintage [8D] Really makes the whole scene *Pop* especially with IronX Counters.

I do however, being a child of the 70s, burn a candle for the deep blue of AH Third Reich's sea maps and wonder if there's and easy way for me to put that blue back into the tile sprites while keeping your terrain changes.

Kudos once again for your excellent work.

Thanks epower & glad you like the Bleached Map mod!
I sure know what you mean with deep blue AH 3R style sea hexes! [8D] (I’m a child of the 60s and AHs 3R is probably my all-time favorite boardgame.)
Unfortunately however, I cannot think of any easy way to achieve what you’re looking for, without affecting ground terrain, since shorelines and estuaries would need to be fiddled with.

No worries, PHalen. I was without internet today so I started learning about sprites and the bitmaps and mucking about with a graphics editor.
Hours of entertainment but as you say, it would be a monumentally large task. I remain in awe of the amount of work you put into this mod.

Cheers!

The Bleached Map mod was actually quite easy to make.
It’s all done with ”Paint.NET”; a downloadable, very intuitive & easy to use freeware.

All map terrain colors, textures & shades are already there in the vanilla bitmap files!
Only WAY too dark so I feel they come out much better when you ”bleach” the bitmap files a bit. (At least they do on my ancient rig.)
Sort of like splashing water on dry stones.

Select a whole sheet, or a section to start with & to compare differences.
Under "Adjustments/Levels...", simply use the slider to play around with darkness and color composition levels until you’re happy.

Come to think of it, by careful use of the handy “Magic Wand” tool, you should also be able to separate & select sea/coastline sections only in order to give them any color you prefer (again by fiddling with the Levels slider.)

And then you’ll be hooked & start looking for other stuff to improve and/or replace…[:D]

Cheers & good luck!
And please post what you’ve cooked up when you feel done!

Thank you for the roadmap...I see many hours of free time evaporating. [X(]

I'll report back when I've got something.
