dramatic mobilization shifts

Post by Treefrog »

MP game as Axis in December 1941 U.S. mobilization is only 79% so I forego early attacks of Japanese in Far East and focus on China and upgrading the fleet. Next turn U.S. goes to 82%. Reasonable. Without any diplomatic maneuvers by Allies or any warning notices of U.S. displeasure and without capturing any additional Chinese cities, in February 1942 U.S. goes to 95% mobilization, catching too many of my invasion transports not in position yet. TBSS, its only a game.

In a different game the Allies intervene in Finland (I don't think it is a good idea and that was before watching what I'm about to recount). Allies successful, Russia rebuked and sulks; mobilization drops from 23% to 14% from where it slowly drifts up while Finland is now 24% Allied favorable. Russia is losing MPPS because of the mobilization multiplier but looks forward to not having to defend the north side of Leningrad. Axis invades in May 1942 while Russian mobilization is only 61% (so you suspect that the MPPs loss has diminished their preparedness). The Axis blocks the Russian fleet in the Gulf of Bothnia so a Russian sub finds itself adjacent to Finnish coast. Finns object to "naval maneuvers" and at the end of the Axis June turn it up and joins the Axis. So let me see if I got this right: Allies pay extra mpps for Finnish intervention for which they receive a British special force and a French special force (which dies with fall of france), Russia's mobilization/preparedness is diminished, Russia loses some defensive hexes north of Leningrad, and Finland still attacks Russia. This reminds me of the "tweener" refrain, "That's not fair!!"[:@]

I recall a game where Germany and Italy invested 200 MPPs into Yugoslavia and inched it to 60% favorable to the Axis. Then along came the British coup event and Yugoslavia was 99% Allied leaning overnight. That's a pretty dramatic shift right there. I had to improvise an invasion of Yugoslavia pretty quick. Historically accurate I suppose, but after that experience I'll never invest diplomatically in trying to get Yugoslavia on the Axis team.

There is a small possibility that the Chasseurs Alpins proceed in the war on the British side with the fall of France.
But you are right. Isn’t fair! Not that war is fair… :D
One time I was playing with the British (the French was with the AI), and I decided to go for Narvik with Rupertforce, but the French decided otherwise… so here I stand with Rupertforce alone at the gates of Narvik, with two or three carriers to give air support but without the French, unable to get the town. At least I was able to return to Britain.
