Question about multiplayer experience

WarPlan Pacific is an operational level wargame which covers all the nations at war in the Pacific theatre from December 1941 to 1945 on a massive game scale.

Question about multiplayer experience

Post by Solaristics »

I play multiplayer games with a friend synchronously so we can chat as we play (discuss game meta, banter and conduct psychological warfare). I know WPP is IGOUGO, and PBEM+ I think, but is it possible for one player to be inspecting the game file they just sent while the other is using a copy to take their turn? I haven't used the Matrix PBEM system for a very long time and don't remember if it locks the other player out somehow.

Only the player whose turn it is can open the game file, in PBEM++. What you could do is play 'hotseat' and email the next turn to your opponent. Then you both could look at the current state of the map while your opponenet is actually making moves.

Thanks very much for the reply. Is the ability to view the live map state while the opponent moves part of the hotseat functionality or are you assuming the use of third-party screen sharing software also?

I have not checked this but seems like someone had mentioned it for some other use.

Try saving a copy of the game just before you end the turn.
Then end the turn normally so it posts out to the web site.
Then see if you can use "Load Game" to bring back the game you saved.

Let us know if it works.

Thanks, but I don't actually own the game yet to test this. I'm only intending to buy it if I am able to play it in the way I outlined above.

No, after you've emailed the save file to the opponent, you would see the map as you left it before sending. You would not see the opponents live map. You wouldn't want to anyway, as that would reveal info that should be hidden to you until you discover it through your own recon or intel.

So, I just want to revisit this thread since it is 6 months later.

I recently bought the game and I am not enjoying the single-player experience, but I'm thinking of getting a copy for a friend to play over the holidays. Our gaming sessions are always synchronous and we have no interest in asynchronous play. So, just to clarify:

(1) I tested out the idea of emailing hotseat files. I'm not sure there is a way of doing this that doesn't undermine the game's FOW. I was thinking that one player can think about their next turn from a save made before hitting next turn, but then you still have to hit next turn before sending the file and that reveals the other player's units.

(2) Can I do a local save before I hit next turn in a PBEM++ game and load the local save to review my units while my friend take their PBEM++ turn? I can't test this on my own, and I was unclear from the responses above whether that was possible.

WEGO doesn't work for this. I already thought about it. Too many variables.

Too bad...works amazing for War In the Pacific. Still both excellent platforms. Thanks for responding.
