High Speed Rail

Is it true that high speed rail assets can't be built in the same hex as regular rail assets? I am having this issue. If I try to build a high-speed rail asset in a hex with a regular rail asset I get the notification "One of this asset type is already in the hex". I can only build the high-speed rail assets in hexes that don't have a regular rail asset.

(I am playing on most recent v1.11.02, but he game was originally started on v1.10.04b.)

Yup, it's been that way since the start. There's been calls to make the normal train assets upgradable to HS train assets but so far this is the way it is.

Yes. This is a major fault in the game. Having to dismantle your logistics system in mid-late game to upgrade is unrealistic and often impossible without suffering disastrous defeats or delays. In the real world you simply upgrade existing rail or lay new rail, without bothering the existing system, unless you choose to. This is my major complaint against the game. I'd rather see this corrected than any new features added.

i keep the old rail systems in the city but build high speed rail one tile outside the city connecting to it and nothing else, it pushes the new rail points through the city as if you had built the high speed rail in the city and out into the logistic network

this is realistic too, real countries with high speed rail like china and the us where it has it (northeast corridor) run both high speed and low speed trains on the same track

v1.11.03 is introducing the option to Convert your low tech rail stations! You however do lose an Asset level doing this and will face some hickups as it takes at least 1 round of reconstruction.

That's great news! This annoyed me too, and I'm glad that a reasonable workaround has been found.
