Civil War Scenario 1861-1865/6 WIP requesting help!

Post by alomoes »

It's a corps/army level grand strategy level game, with some smaller units, ((specifically before 1st Bull Run)). I have most of the OOBs done in the East. There's a lot of turns in this one. I wanted to give an accurate portrayal of campaigning in the Civil War, and I decided 3 days is accurate for a 19th century campaign. It starts in April with the siege of Fort Sumpter, and ends January 2nd 1866. I chose 1866 for an end date if the CSA or Union don't get their sudden death victory conditions ((Capture Richmond New Orleans, and accumulate x victory points)). I'm still working on sudden death victory conditions, that'll come after I finish making the scenario.

I was wondering if anyone was interested in helping me make the map. I made the coast and the great lakes, I'm wondering if someone can do the cities and terrain. I have maps that you can use, I'm just burnt out because I lost a lot of progress when I lost a file. It's a 15 km/hex scale map of the entire Civil War. I have the coast, and some of the East done.

So what happened is I transferred the wrong file over from my old computer, and I cannot find the most recent file on it. As such, I lost a lot of progress. I had all the events for most of the armies in the East transferring on demand ((theatre event) to another commander. It's very annoying, but I'll live. This is when I took a break, and began working on smaller scenarios.

I had events to detail McClellan getting replaced with Burnside, and then Burnside being replaced with Hooker, and then Hooker with Meade. I can remake them relatively easily. I also have plans to have an event to detach some of the A. of Potomac to create the Army of the Rappahannock under Banks and the Army of Virginia under Pope to set up the conditions of a Second Manassas. Peninsular campaign will also be playable, of course. I even have plans for the Battle of Big Bethel, MacGruder vs Butler and Pierce.

On the Confederate side, for the East, you're supposed to get the Army of Northern Virginia, ironically, in a similar state to Burnside's Grand Divisions. Initially, there's problems coordinating everything under Johnston, so they have poor experience. My thoughts are that reducing experience will reduce casualties to an acceptable level, allowing Bull Run to start small, and then Antietam, with McClellan and Lee's comparably experienced armies having more casualties, until Gettysburg.

I have to do the west, but I have documents detailing literally every army I could find. I need to go through all the raiding parties that existed, but for now, we can operate with what I have. Most of the armies in the West have no real figures on troop numbers except Grant's, I think, so I'm probably making up numbers based on whatever I feel like.

Some notes on how I'm crafting this scenario. Because I'm not digging through and figuring out who has what gun, I'm just going to leave everyone with rifle (muskets). There's historical precedent for this, as while the armies did use rifled muskets, engagement ranges were generally at musket range, and they didn't utilize the full power of their rifles. Instead, troop quality will be reflected by training. 5% is volunteers, 10% is regulars, and 30% is elite. Back in the civil war, they didn't have a very good system of training the massive militia army, so that's mostly why the Europeans scoffed at this American war. As an example, just 5 years later, the Prussians had a telegraph system that meticulously directed armies that were trained to operate at the platoon level. It wasn't exactly squads at that point, but they weren't marching up in big blocks during the Franco-Prussian war. These troops would have a training of 30%. I know that they did use line tactics in WW1, but I do believe that was a result of the european belief that militia couldn't operate in independent platoons. That surely was the British officer's opinion at the Somme, hence the British walked their troops to take on the enemy. Anyways, that's why the training is so low. From what I've tested, it's works pretty well at lowering casualties to a reasonable level. I need to do some finagling with retreat values, but otherwise, it's pretty good.

Anyways, if anyone is interested, do tell me. It's going to be a massive amount of work, but I think it'll be worth it in that we'll have probably the most accurate civil war game I can make in TOAW IV.

This scenario is a US CW scenario with an 11 km/hex scale. Maybe you can use that one.
