Is the RTW3 Game engine capable of Science Fiction or Galactic combat?

Rule the Waves III is a simulation of naval ship design and construction, fleet management and naval warfare from 1890 to 1970. and will place you in the role of 'Grand Admiral' of a navy from the time when steam and iron dominated warship design up to the missile age.

Post by MaddogStarman »

Sir’s

I realize this is Way way out of the box question and this is a repost I put in the mod forum it got over 100 hits but no answer from anyone. I am still curious. Is game engine capable Science fiction play or galactic combat?

Sir
Having played RtW,RtW2 for several years and now RtW3 it just occurred to me that they look and feel and play similar to going way back old school here VGA Planets. Is this game engine even capable of some type of galactic science fiction play/battels?

Thank you for your time

If you have the fantasy to ignore the game's hardcoded language and settings and are willing to do a lot of modding with what can be changed, there is not much of a reason why not. Frankly a star wars ship mod would be quite cool.

Floatation damage=air tightness damage, suffering floatation=losing air
Colonial possessions=colonial planets
etc. etc.
I am not aware how much you can change map, some hardcoded ship categories or research, but with some ingenuity you could work around this. If you are willing to spend 200 hours.

Sir

My I call you EaK ?

It appears we both play the game quite often and run across some of the same bugs/issues.
I agree Star Wars would be an interesting fit, but as copyright issues, it would have to be done as a mod. Don’t know if you’re familiar with an old sorry to say kid’s science-fiction cartoon Star Blazers Came to my mind. Also, this game is very similar to an old old school 4X game, VGA planets. If they considered it, of course, the countries would become planets and/or space territories and colonies could be mineral, rich, asteroids other colonies could be mineral rich planets of of course simple graphics, but I believe everything is there in this engine. We’re not talking Newtonian physics year would be 2D. Play like it is now But I would think that changing water for vacuum of space would not be too difficult. Submarines would become super stealthy Subspace ships, maybe? Warp Drive, hyperdrive, Starjump drive = would be done at pre battle and on ship Strategic movement screen.? All battles and ships involved would fight/maneuver at below light speed as in Star Wars.
Yes, the possibilities are endless. They could take this game from a 3X to a 4X it just depends on how hard they wanna work and/or market for the game.

Thanks for your reply post EaK

If you make the "a" a "v", you can :-) A lot of people just use EvK for me.

Indeed. I don't think there is a big market or that the devs will go this way, but certainly some modders could do this.

I don't know much about Sci-Fi and fantasy except for Star Wars/Lotr/GoT, but a star wars mod could indeed be really fun. In many ways the star wars battles are modelled after early 20th century naval combat, so it would be a natural fit.

I'd make one small change to the suggestion - make the Sea Zones into sectors, then make colonies into start systems - mostly due to their odd clustering nature.

The only real issue I'd have is that 2D combat in space is not really logical and you'd be sacrificing a lot of manoeuvring options to make such a game.
