Against the Rules!

Post by BBfanboy »

Just when we thought we knew how the game engine handles things, I get this bizarre situation:
Tanker Accident.jpg

Tanker On Fire DOCKED.jpg

Note that there is no mention of a collision - the tanker simply had an 'accident'. Yes - smoking kills!

But the bizarre part is that I was able to dock it while at 92% fire! And I am unloading the fuel too! I will leave it there to see if the base burns up!
All along we have been told that ships on fire cannot be docked - but this one did! It also gives the option to disband the TF.
I am sure it will sink before next turn so we will never know if the game engine kicks it away from the pier.

I had a similar experience once. But I've always been able to dock burning ships....GP

I had a tanker or AO sink at sea from a fire. No enemy action at all.

There have been even warships exploding accidently....

It did happen.

Quite aware of that. What I thought was unusual was being able to dock a burning ship. I know for sure that some afire troop-carrying transports I had could not dock to let the troops off so I thought that applied to all ships. It is possible that a patch changed the algorithm on that.

Like RJ, I have had a tanker at sea just start on fire with no enemy action at all. It was not in a coastal hex so there was no chance that grounding caused it and was a single ship TF so no collisions either. I've even had accidents to ships in drydock which caused them huge amounts of systems and engineering damage.

On the next turn my Ops report had a one-line entry about damage control failure and ship was abandoned. No message about sinking that I saw, but it is on the sunk ships list. Also no indication whether the AI kicked it away from the pier before it sank. No effect on the port.

Edit to add: I think the ship being abandoned means the Captain certainly survived. If still in a TF and not docked there is a chance he would not survive the sinking.

If you check the manual ...

ships have x % chance of being destroyed whilst under repair ( like BB Mutsu) maybe you had one sys dam , they can also hit uncharted rocks and reefs - very interesting to see this. Unloading issue sounds like a bug.

I am well aware of the chances of damage suddenly happening. It is pretty rare though. In the case of this AO it was not under repair so it was just something happening during unloading of the fuel. Again, fairly rare but stuff happens in war. There is a chance that the ability to dock burning ships was added in a patch. I had issues with the Beta 1126b so I stayed on version 1124 (IIRC) long after 1126 was out. Once they made 1126a the official version I patched up to that version but haven't played that long with it, so this is my first experience with the burning ship dock/no dock question since then. I thought it made sense that the harbourmaster would not want a burning ship at the pierside lest it capsize there and block the berth (the game does not model that, but that happened to xAP Normandie at New York).

had two tankers disappear in a puff of smoke due various smoking related incidents in my last game - part of life's rich tapestry or at least WITP;AE's
