Newbie question about visual updates

Post by shgenerolas »

Hi guys. I'm a WITE2 player, completely new to WITP.

I know that the best way to start diving in to the game is to read the Manual. However, I like to read the Manual and at the same time try the game. Therefore, I would like to update the game's visuals. I tried to upload Kamikaze map, but somehow it didn't work - when I upload files to Art folder, the map remained old.

Maybe experienced players can help me understand which of the mods offered here in Forum work and are worth to use? What would you suggest to download in order to update the game's visuals in 2025?

Thanks!

If the map update did not work, it would most likely be that the game version and the map did not agree. So, let's start there.

You want to be playing the last officially released version of the game, not any of the beta's. That means 1026a.
Go to your page and get this update.

This is what is called the standard map. You will then use the standard map form of the kamikaze map update. Make a copy of your ART folder first and then update. It should work well.

Understand that the engine is over 30 years old and there are severe limitations as to what can be done visually. Some of the new maps are aesthetically more pleasing, but many do have some minor discrepancies in terms of terrain. To an experienced player, it presents almost no issue, but to a newbie ... well beware. Even though the original maps are a bit less appealing, they are the most accurate in terms of representing terrain and having sufficiently different graphics for each of the terrains represented on the map.

Shgenereolas, there are actually two map sets in your ART folder:

-map with hexes
-map without hexes

I bet you downloaded one Kamikaze map set and then started the game with the other map set.

Thanks PaxMondo and Yaab! I will try select different map set, if that will not work, I will try different version of game (because yaeh, I have some latest beta version).

BTW, maybe there is some others visual updates, that experienced players are using?

There are literally hundreds, but these are so dependent upon the user that recommendations are extremely biased. Check Art Mods thread in the Design portion above.

Thanks.

Probably, It would be a good idea to try the game with the original map first, in case the improved maps have glitches.

BTW I downloaded the latest official version, but I'm still having the problem that the screen scrolling through the map is very laggy. The image changes very slowly. Do you have any tips on how to fix this?

Yes, that way you can look at the pictures in the manual and what is on your screen while the map is the same type.

You need to get the correct switches!
This should get you the correct switches, if you can get a working link . . .

I think this would be a good idea.

Not so much glitches, but the map image gives you the terrain within that hex. Of course the map maker, being somewhat of an artist, wants to smooth the transition between say mountain and rough. Sometimes that smoothing can cause you to miss-interpret the actual terrain ... there are a LOT of terrain types.
