OBA in Battle (PBEM)

Post by Aga »

I haven’t play SPWAW since some month now, I would like to re-start some PBEM soon. For the moment I am playing some campaigns, to relearn the game.
I remember something which annoyed me when I played PBEM battles, it was the fact that when I played a meeting engagement or an advance/delay my opponent could have Off Board artillery, plenty of 150 mm battery for example. It was not very realistic, and have a tendency to “kill” the game. I found that really boring. And in my latest PBEM, I played only scenarios, where the OB is already given.

So I would have liked to know if players have house rules concerning the purchasing of artillery in a Battle, to limit its power and number ?

Always discuss such things with your opponent beforehand. The "usual" limit is 10-15% of your points total arty for either player.
What, me worry?

Yes, 15 % is a good idea. At the same time I would say that there shouldn't be Off Board Art in meeting engagements, 105mm at the max in Advance/delay battle, and what you want in Assault.

Again, this is something you'll want to discuss with the person you're playing against.

Speaking for myself, I'd find no OB arty during a meeting engagement to be too unrealistic, the same for the 105mm limit in advance/delay.

I'll give you realistic, perhaps too realistic. RB and I started a pbem meeting engagement, H2Hfr, with simultaneous airdrops trying to take the same real estate. So what did my luck turn out to be? My A0 landed adjacent to one of his pre-plotted OBA circles. Ouch!!! Lost my A0 on turn zero and I've got about half of a Forward 0bserver left. This is going to be a looonnngg 30 turns.

:( :(

You dropped your A0? Man, that's ballsy! I'd have left him in the rear with a squad or two for security.

That was the concept Bernie. All of our initial forces had to be infantry and all come in either by cargo plane or glider sometime in the 1st 5 turns. Armor and anything else has to be requested as reinforcements and that can't happen until turn 8 of 30. It's either gonna be a real quick battle or a long drawn out one. No restrictions on where we could plot drop points so I think this one looked like a Chinese Fire Drill. :D

Bob said we landed all over each other.

I'm sure I'll cry when I watch the replay.

Yes, it’s very possible that I exaggerate. And I remember an advance/delay battle where my opponent and I had decided to play without OBA. I attacked, and I quickly understood that the idea was stupid.
And, to be fair, I must say that if I find OBA too powerful, it’s certainly because of my playing skills which have to be improved !
