More newbie questions that were answered 2 years ago

The more I play this game, the more that I am enjoying it.

Several more questions.

1.) When is it a good idea to send ships back to Pearl? The Yorktown took the brunt of an enemy carrier attack and took 4 torps and 7 bombs. Its been 3 days since the attack and so Im going to assume she is going to make it back to Noumea. The fires are out and her flotation damage has droped from 70 to 60 but her system damage is 68. Noumea has a fairly large port. Should I disband the task force and let it repair or send it back to Pearl and hope the Naval department decides to send something good?

2.) In this same battle I severly damaged a CVL and hit a CV pretty bad. Is their ever an instance where you do not see a ship sink? I got two fuel explosion messages. two Severe damage messages and one critical damage messege on the CVL (Surely to God that thing is going to sink I hit it 11 times with 1000 lb bombs and one 21 inch torp). The CV I got a below deck explosion messege and below deck fire messege. And when I hit it with a Torp I got a listing to one side messege. I knocked almost 60 Japenese planes out of the sky to my 35. I think I won a decent tactical victory [8D].

3.) I have ships that have taken routine damage from sailing (which is stupid...I hope in WiTp they get rid of that) they range between 3-9. Should I disband this task force or will it repair itself?

4.) I moved a Marine Wildcat squadern onto a carrier. I ordered it out and one day later I noticed one wildcat had been left behind ( I think it was damaged and had been repaired). I tried to put it on the Lexington with its parent unit. But their was no room and the poor guy had to be put on the Yorktown. He lived through the above batter (even with a 48 exp). Is their anyway to get him back with his squadern?

And also thanks for the help with my B-25 question. My opponent took PM but I had 60 some bombers set to 100 and 1000 feet and for the loss of 11 planes I sunk 13 transports and several minesweepers and subchasers and the like.

1).If Yorktown reaches Noumea, sent her back. Sys damage that high on a capital ship will take forever to be repaired at Noumea, and even Pearl will need at least six months to patch her up.

2) Congrats - but what's your question?

3) It's not stupid. Every piece of machinery will slowly degrade when used, especially when exposed to the elements and mechanical stress. But routine damage will be repaired just like system damage sustained in combat. The crew will attempt to repair damage at sea, but it's better to dock the TF in a port and even better to disband the TF - ships in docked TFs repair faster and disbanded ships in port again even faster. I usually let system damage from routine damage get up to 10 or eleven and then disband the ship in a major port for a while.

4. So you transfered the Marine Wildcats from the Yorktwon to Lady Lex and one guy got left behind? You can try to transfer him to Lady Lex, too, and hope he will recombine with his parent unit. But if its only one guy, why don't you simply disband him and his plane into the Wildcat squadron aboard Yorktown?
Btw, it has been found that meddling with carrier air groups can cause odd things to happen (e.g. air groups disappearing or changing to medium bombers or having Dauntless with Navy designation belonging to the Army...), so it is not recommended.

1) Send it back - anything over 50 damage (total) prevents the carrier from launching aircraft. It will take far too long for that kind of damage to be repaired in theater & you'll get other carriers from Pearl long before Yorktown would be fully repaired anyway.

My rule of thumb is to send back anything with over 20-25 system damage.

2) You never actually see the ship sink - sometimes you get a message right after the combat though - if you confirm it sunk....otherwise you'll have the wait to find out.

3) Routine movement does generate system damage (think of it as maintenance issues, barnacles on the hull, etc) - you will mostly see a reduction in ship speed when this happens & this kind of damage (low, below 10) is usually repairable in theater, though at a pretty slow rate. In WiTP this has been reduced, but you will still see it.

4) You would need to transfer the squadron back to a land base to consolidate them. Its usually not a good idea to swap squadrons (especially putting marines on Carriers, since it wasn't done historically) - and watch the 110% rule, if you are overcapacity on a carrier, no one will fly.

Question #1 is no longer valid. The Yorktown took a turn for the worst and I was forced to scuttle her.
Not sure if this was a battle in my favor now. I did get confirmation that I sunk one of his CV's (whichever one starts with a Z).

I worded question 3 wrong. Stupid may be too strong of a word. But the damge rate is way too fast. 8 points for a cruise out and back is a tad bit too much.

I have messed around with disbanding groups already. I made 4 B-17 squads into two larger groups.
Do carrier groups automaticly get replacements once they are in port?

Too bad. I have lost Yorktown today, too, and have Sara at the brink of sinking, but I took Shoho with me and damaged Shokaku and Zuikaku badly.This game is FUN!

I agree that the damage simply from cruising around goes up too fast, esp. for combattant ships.

Don't disband too many groups into one, each squadron will only operate so many planes (4, 9, 12, 16, 24, 27... depending on the plane type and side you play), the rest will go into reserve. The B-17s are chronically understrength, just put them on naval search for most of the time until they have reached full strength.

AFAIK carrier air groups should receive replacements while in port when the port is within a/c transfer range from Truk/Noumea/Brisbane.

If you scuttle a ship or if the ship sinks in a remote location, there is a good chance your enemy will remain unaware of the sinking. The sinking may remain a secret from your opponent for some time. Eventually it will show up on the sunk ship list. Consider it an intellegence lag.

Is their ever an instance where you do not see a ship sink?
Never saw a ship sinking in the "arcade" phase when attacked by planes but you see them sinking in surface battles. My 2BB 8CA IJN TF mauled an Allied AP/AK TF today - nice to watch.

Correct. As IJN I place them at Rabaul because Vals and Kates are more short legged than an A6M. Transferred A6M2s from Truk to Koumac non-stop today. [:)]
