Rome:Total War
Seems like the only game coming out that may combine tactical realism with widespread appeal. It's all either abstract RTS, or detailed niche wargames these days.
Or maybe it's just the very impressive graphics.

There are also several excellent mods for MTW that I have enjoyed playing including: "Hellenic Total War"; Napoleon Total War; etc. . .
RE: Rome:Total War
Von Rom, those mods you just mentioned, especially, Napoleon Total War, do you happen to know of a website or post a link for me? I would really appreciate it. I have MTW and like it and am looking for something to pass the time until Rome TW comes out. THanks

I don't know about "tactical realism"... Shogun (which I much preferred, for some reason) and Medieval both used basic tactical principles but were hardly realistic simulations of warfare in their respective periods/locations.
That said, both games were great fun, ... or at least the tactical game was, I thought the strategic level in Medieval particularly was very average. Rome should certainly be worth the money, though.

Anyway, the demo is out now! Looks like a winner!

RE: Rome:Total War
there is tacticle realism and the ability to model realistically..
If you want to hook up a cray and go for men on a field interacting in combat, be my guest, but for a realistic model, ie arrow hit at range, better range for elevation, pikers good but slow etc mtw was very very good....

Here is a site that lists all the mods available for MTW. Note that you may also need the Viking expansion to play some of them:

Yes, and many of the mods have also tweaked unit stats etc, to give even more realistic gameplay.

Maliki,
I just downloaded the demo and it looks good. It has the Total War feel to it. From what I've read, most of the smart money is on a release at somepoint in the Sept 17th-24th time frame. The suggestion is also that the UK/US release will be simultaneous.
I think it is the City assaults and new style strategic map that will be the best improvements. The demo confirms the playable factions and has lots of attached screen shots. Bring it on.
regards,
IronDuke

I know what you mean. Created a non-subscribers account, got the not logged in message, then had to wait 68 minutes for the download to start. I'm not sure why they don't host it themselves. Still, let us know what you think.

To tell the truth i don't know what to think.Maybe i'm just dumb, with a capital B,but i was hoping for some insight into the campaign games with the demo. This is going to be a huge part of the game for me,and i'm sure many others, and without it its hard to make a full judgement on it..oh yeah did i mention i just hope theres no assasins in this game[:@]if there is then i think that its going to be given away as soon as i get it.These units made MTW almost unplayable,in the campaigns,in my opinion,as not only was it frustrating to have generals, emmisaries, bishops, killed turn after turn after turn, even with all the upgrades suggested to keep them from being a major problem in your owned provinces..but because i felt like the AI was using them just to use them and with no real long term goal in mind.."ooh look i'm in a province with a bishop..lets kill it!".[:D]
I've quite many a game of MTW out of disgust just because,as time goes on(and the fact that i've tried to use these units in the same way as the AI,with no success whatsoever.)These units become way too numerous, and when you're getiing over half a dozen assination attempts per turn,it takes away from the gameplay.

Heheh
I know what you mean.
I'm currently in a game playing as the Egyptians. I have all of North Africa, and now I'm moving north into Turkey. I just defeated one Crusade sent against me.
I have never really spent much time with those agents. However, after beating off several large Spanish armies in Morocco, it has started to send in Bishops to change that province's religion.
Before I knew it, my Muslim religion was losing out to the Catholic religion in Morocco.
So I grabbed the manual and spent some time reading the section on agents.
I pumped out some Imams and placed them in Morocco to counter-balance those Bishops. Then I trained some assassins and sent them after the Bishops.
There is one thing you need to do however: that is to ensure that your assassins gain valour before attacking the bishops (which can have 3-4 in valour).
What I do is use my assassins to attack enemy or neutral emissaries and princesses. Each successful kill for them increases their valour (right click on the agent icon to see it). Then when the assassins are at 2-3 valour I try to hit the Bishops.
It takes a little getting used to, but it works, and I am enjoying that aspect of the game now.
Also be sure that NO mercenary general is left to command an army; otherwise you'll have a rebellion on your hands after a few years. I usually spread the princes out among the various armies under my command.
As far as things are shaping up, it looks like Italy and I (Egypt) are becoming the predominant superpowers. When we tangle, it will be one heck of a clash. . .
As to RTW:
I've read in the RTW forums where some of the people who have played the demo are criticizing it as being dumbed down a bit to draw in the RTS crowd. Such things as fast unit speed, green arrows, units with voices, fantasy units (flaming pigs anyone?), are examples of gameplay that some MTW players are worried about. They are concerned about where the franchise is headed.
Cheers!

flaming pigs anyone
I do believe these are a legitimate unit(same as if they decided to make flaming cattle a unit).I remember they were in DBA also.My main complaint was that assasins are a cheap, and no consequence unit when caught. Why even fight a battle if you could just keep creating these units by the score and sooner or later all the emmisaries,Bishops, Best Generals, are killed after a couple dozen turns. They are a legitimate unit, but the way the AI uses them is ridicoulous.Hmm..i'm allied with the germans, for say,yet each turn(and i can see playing dirty)A german assasin is caufght trying to murder your Prince,General,emmissary..turn after turn after turn..and in several different provincesYet if you catch these perfidious units"We believe,or their gold filled their pockets",name such and such a nation, lets just pretend nothing happened and don't try to attack them, doesn't matter that you caught a dozen of their assasins in the last score turn, because the Medeival world will turn against you.[8|]These are stupid units the way they are used, and the non-consequence for their use or failure in the game, and if they use them in the new game then i will say that not only that, but that the developers are stupid with these cheap, even though tech is needed, and don't ask me how the AI gets so many so early in the game, and no consequence units..you don't even need to make an army once you get enough of these..just keep sending them out once they are available and no enemy general or unit of consequence can escape them after enough attempts.[:-]

Hi:
There are other fantasy units I believe besides the "flaming pigs".
I fully understand your position, though, as regards to all the agents. They are everywhere - heheh
In a sense, in the way they are used, it can detract from the game somewhat.
However, I have learned to build structures in each border province with the AI that kills their assassins. I have not lost a single general to an enemy assassin.
To counter the enemy Bishops, I keep assassins and Imans in my border provinces as well.
By developing a counter strategy, the enemy agents have not really bothered me at all.
Also, use your assassins to take out the AI's princesses and emissaries. This keeps them from forming alliances, developing heirs to the throne, and gives your assassins an easy way to develop valour for taking out more experienced religious agents.
While the AI builds agents, I build military units, and I continue to conquer territory.
Cheers!

Border forts are murder on assassins. Also keeping a couple of spies in the province will help. My complaint is more those damn inquisitors - they add a real level of frustration when you play as a catholic faction. Very over-powered against the AI, but the AI inquisitors can be pretty hard on your generals, too. You can keep them away if you salt your provinces with bishops and cardinals, but they are still damn pesky and hard to assassinate.

I haven't played a Catholic faction yet. Are the Inquistors that bad?
I wonder if there are any mods available that have toned down the impact of agents?

Only the Pope and the crusading catholic factions (English, French, Spanish, Argonese, Italians) can build inquisitors and grand inquisitors, and yes they can be a challenge. They'll show up in your province and burn your best general for heresy, and then disappear. I lost a lot of assassins trying to get rid of them until I found some tips on how to keep them under control.
Here is a great site for all things Total War:
Forums: http://forums.totalwar.org/vb/
Org: http://www.totalwar.org/
There are lots of mods available, and the tools to mod your own game are pretty easy to use (if you just want to tweek agents or some such.) The forum in a wealth of info, lots of people willing to answer your mod questions if you want to do it yourself. To get to some of the mods go to the org page and choose "files" under Medieval, then "Medieval Downloads", then "Stats and Mods".
Stumbled across this game by accident - have found it to be quite entertaining and addictive. Looking forward to RTW.

Maybe it was inquistors that Maliki was referring to.
I haven't run into them yet as I always start a campaign from the very beginning.
When do they start showing up? Are they a late game unit?
In my present game I am facing an Uber Italian nation, so I want to be ready.
I agree that MTW is a great game.
Hellenic Total War (a mod) is being tweaked and is very addictive to play.
Thanks for sites [:)]
