tho ive only played the demo...

Starshatter: The Gathering Storm extends the classic space sim by combining fighter and starship combat in a single dynamic campaign game.

C'mon now. Really even you know that's not true.
but the ships
Disagree. What's wrong with them?
the controls
Agreed at least in terms of the default keyboard layout. But then again I think this of every game. Heck at least this one didn't use the A, S, D like directional controls. My main complaint is I cannot seem to figure out how to alter the control setup to use the mouse buttons on my four button mouse (even for mouse1). Id like mouse1 to fire and the scroll wheel perhaps for throttle? Seems akward to fire using the ctrl key when you already have both hands elsewhere.
the cameras
Disagree. What's wrong with them? In fact I was thrilled to see I could right mouse-click at all. And I have camera controls when I do!
i just cant think of any other words to describe thsi game except BAD
Well I just downloaded the demo as well. Before there was ZERO chance I would have ever bought this title. It's too far off my core prefered style of gaming but now with a demo available there is some chance greater than that (The exact chance remains to be seen).

My initial reactions are that the game appears to have much more depth to it than I previously thought, the interface is better than I would have thought(right mouse clicking and such, the weapon systems selectable right near the crosshairs, and select other things I noticed right away) and so forth. The graphics didn't put me off either.

I just need some help getting the controls more to my liking and then I'll be able to render more of a full and final opinion...

Marky,

Thanks for sharing... [8|]

I completely disagree with you, but you're entitled to your opinion. Of course, I have to wonder what kind of hardware you were running it on (it does include a software renderer for those without 3D cards), what resolution, what kind of controls you were using and whether you even tried the campaign or some of the neat camera features (like hitting F3 and then looking around the map during a mission, such as "Execution is Everything" to see a cap ship engagement happening while you're chasing down a smuggler across the quadrant).

wow i got an admin to reply lol

u dont see that all too often :P

yw erik :P

maybe i was a bit harsh

but that was just my first impressiomn with the game, and i played it for a while

the fighters were too hard to control (i had a mouse and a gamepad)

the ships were hard to control as well, the frigate was a bit better

that was my first impression

and u all know the thing about first impressions

theyre hard to get over, and u can only make it once lol

i guess ill give it another try and spend sum more time on it

plus i posted cuz i needed to rant and vent [:'(] [:'(] [;)][:D]

and yes i felt much better afterwards [:D]

ill giv it another go [:)]

ive run thru the demo

ive gone thru the missions

i honestly think ive given it a fair chance[:-]

and i stand by my original judgement

and add

this is the worst game ive ever played in my long career of gaming

i therefore see no reason whatsoever to EVER buy the full game and waste money, and i must say matrixgames has disappointed me

Uncommon Valor is a great game, and im sure that WITP is too

but Starsshatter, is without a doubt in my mind, the worst game, or demo, ive ever played

sorry guys[:'(]

Just out of morbid curiousity, can you name two space simulations that you did like? I'm just wondering what my competition is here. I mean, besides eXtreme Paintbrawl! [;)]

... he probably played the "I don't like it so it is not worth it, so people shouldn't played, period" sim.
Didn't you knew that one Milo? It is the one where you don't like something (or are just jealous you can't have it) and do everything you can to keep others from liking it![:-]
He has never played X-Wing Alliance, Battlecruiser Milennium, Wing Commander (among other), in a extensive way, to realise that this is the best buy for it's class sim (even though I'd love to see Battleships on it sometime [;)] - sorry Milo... [:D]).

Greetings,

I have downloaded the demo on Friday and I was trying it all the weekend. I must disagree with marky. For example the controls in the game work well for me. The only complain I would have is the graphcs. It looks, well how to say it without insulting, old. Yes, that is it the word. The graphics should really be improved. We have end of the year 2004 and the graphics looks like from year 1998.
When I look to games like X2, E.V.E. or Nexus I wonder whether you are even planning some new graphics layout.
Anyway I am still considering the purchase of the game. But 30 EUR is 30 EUR plus 12 EUR for VAT and tax. It makes 42 EUR = 1300 CZK. I will continue my considerings.

... yeah but those 42 euros (58 USD) wich I have paid are completly worth it and if were to go back in time, I'd pay them again.
The only thing I think misses in this game are Battleships, as all other classes are represented (you have 3 classes of carriers, 3 of Cruisers, 5 Destroyers, etc. but not a single BB).
As for graphics, I think you will be happy that this game doesn't lag on massive fleet missions, where you have about 20 capital ships and their respective fighter wings swarming around, with little or no lag.[:D]
I have tried many sims too (I have been playing computer games and boardgames for over 20 years now and some people here are less than 20 years of age) and I am convinced without question that this is a good purchase!... just crossing my fingers for those BBs[&o]
... and remember SW that Starshatter has many added values like the possibility to fly all known universes on MP games - yes tha is right!
People like Damocles, Melkor and TurgotZ, have edited mods like Babylon 5, Star Wars and the Arcadia, wich allow you to create and fly battles for that universe.
You can get them all by registering at the Starshatter Central.
Furthermore, what space sim do you know tha will allow you to fly from the drone to the Capital ship, plus the ability (if you have the rank...) to control the battle at a tactical level?
You can't do this anywhere else...
And let me add you that after 2 months of addictive and intense play over 100 hours, I have made Grand Admiral. I can now control entire fleets and decide when and how things will happen[;)], while at the same time, getting in a fighter or a big ass ship and fly the whole battle through!
Discover the enigmatic crab-like Zolons and their deadly ships... it is a must for any Sci-Fi junky, as most of us are.

BTW, Damocles is doing a BSG mod, faithfull to the new series that wll comeout on TV on January 2005!!!!

Be one of the first to fly a Colonial Viper against a Cylon raider, before someone makes an official BSG game! [:-]

I hope this has motivated you to make the "jump" from the demo to the commercial version - as it is worth it.
Note that I don't have any financial interest nor am I related or work for Matrix Games (though BBs on the next release would be an awesome pay for my commercial efforts in promoting the game [:D])!!!

This game is so good that I actually spend money for the Starshatter community by maintining the www.starshattercentral.com website, along with DamoclesX wich provides awesome webmastering/deving and all the moderators who volunteer to moderate the forums, like Melkor, The Reverend, Col. Blackwolf.

You will discover the pleasure of being part of a comunity, one that is relatively new but that is growing stronger ad stronger.

Hope to catch you soon in the stars... [8D]

Thanks for your comments. What resolution/settings are you running the graphics at? The current engine is based on DirectX 7, which gives us the benefit of not requiring a lot of horsepower to run it, even at the highest settings with AA/AF enabled. For me, at those settings, the game looks pretty darn good but it's certainly not at the level of the latest DirectX 9 games. The strengths for me are the dynamic campaign and scalable playability (fighter to capital ship). The graphics are really good enough to suspend disbelief and pull me into the story as I play.

By the way, the digital download is only 22,99 Euros until January 3rd, so that might be a good option for you if your budget is limited. If you have a slow connection, use a program like www.stardownloader.com to allow you to resume the download despite interruptions.

SW, were you running in software rendering mode, by any chance?
If so, switch to DX7 renderer and the graphics will definetly be taken up a notch. True, they don't fully compare to EVE, but they are nice, clean and perfectly servicable. Furthermore, milo is working on a DX9 based engine that will look most spiffy, I'm sure.

Greetings all. Thank you for your comments. About the download. I think it would be cheaper to buy a CD version than to pay my telephone bills. Maybe I could download it at work, but my boss would not like that.
About the DX. Yes, I set up DX7 in the prefernces, plus the resolution 1280x1024 (maybe 1280x960). The graphics is not so bad after all, I just found the ships not to be very detailed. Anyway, if I buy it, will I have to pay for the DX9 version again?

So you convinced me [:D] I have just ordered not only Starshatter, but Uncommon Valor as well. I hope it will not ruin me. May I ask how long it may take to deliver it to the Czech Republic?

So the game finally arrived yesterday. May I ask how can I start a campaign as a frigate captain? Or do I have to start as a figter pilot and then request a transfer? Please advice.

When you create a new pilot you should be able to select a high enough rank to control a frigate from the Experience drop down menu.
